As an occasional visitor to this section of the old dominion, I have been much im- pressed with the creat improvements in and @-ound the crowing town of Manassas. By @ recent election in Prince William county it was decided to remove the county seat from Brentsville to this place and to erect @ new court house and jail. This has re- sulted in giving to Manassas a commodious structure for the transaction of the legal business of the county and a secure retreat for those citizens who have not the fear of | the law in their conscience. Mr. E. Meredith, representative from the @ighth congressional district, has concluded that Manassas is “good enough for him,” | and has given practical evidence of his in- terest in the welfare of the community by the erection of a handsome residence, and will make Manassas his future home. The palatial country seat of Robert Port- mer {s fast nearing completion and merits more than a passing notice. It is situated @ httle north of east from the railroad sta. tion and immediately on the borders of the town. Being located upon a gentle emi-| nence, which brings it-into view for many miles around, it forms in the beauty of its outlines one of the most conspicuous and interesting features of the landscape. It is Duilt in the style of the oid colonial times, being a reproduction in detail of the best examples of the manorial residences of old Virginia, with spacious halls and large, commodious rooms. Indeed, no effort has ehitect or artisan to make elegant and convenient private residences in the state. The exterior is of buff brick and Manassas | brown-stone trimmings.
