18 SSS THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, APRIL %, 1894A—-TWENTY PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. The real estate owned by the corporation | of Alexandria has now gotten to be a very small amount. Originally the old board of trustees, which constituted the municipal government, owned all the souares between Oronoko and Wolfe streets and from St. Asaph street to the river. These were all sold out and the money received accounted for to proprietors from whom the land had been bought, except that there was reserved | two landings—one at the foot of Duke street and the other at the foot of Oronoko street— the market square, the old tobacco ware- house lots between Fairfax, Lee, Princess and Oronoko streets and the old Chapel of Ease lots or church lots on Pitt street, north of Queen street, on the edge of the marsh. The church lots and the tobacco warehouse lots were afterward sold. The landing at the foot of Duke street has recently been sold, but the landing at the foot of Oronoko reet and the market square are still owned | y the corporation. The city has received grant from the United States of one-half of the old jail and the old court house lots, and, by devise, the upper market lot on Cameron betwen Fayette and Payne streets; and, by purchase, the city gas works’ lots. The city also places the public school houses in the list of its assets, but the pub- Ue school property belongs to the state of ‘Virginia. The value of the real estate of the city, as set out in the list of assets, is $871,062.75. It is not thought, however, that this property could be sold for one- half of this amount, even if the city pos- sessed the power to sell it. The troubles at the Alexandria Infirmary still cotinue, and Dr. Wm. Gibbson of the consulting staff and Miss Adams, the matron of the institution, have not tendered their resignations. Drs. Bedford Brown and George T. Klipstein still remain connected with the instituion, which is in excellent condition and is in receipt of a subsidy from the city and constant contributions from the various churches, &c. It is the genreal wish of citizens that these troubles may soon be heeled and harmony reign in the manage- | ment of the institution. The funeral of Mrs. Virgi: Inte venerable teacher of the public school system, who died yesterday, will take place on Monday morning next, and will be at- tended by teachers and other representa- tives of the public school system of Alex- andria. It is expected that the confirmation of Mr. Cc. C. Carlin as postmaster of this city will be made by the Senate at once.’ Mr. Carlin will receive his commission and give bond during the present month, so as to take charge at, or before, the opening of May. The council of King’s Daughters of Grace Church is considering a proposai to endow a@ cot in the children’s ward of the Alex- endria Infirmary. The Alexandria Odd Fellows are now de- voting much time in preparing for the ses- sion of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, which will bring to this city next week most of the leading members of that order in the state of Virginia. During the session of the Grand Lodge, I. O. O. F., a visit is expected from the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia of the same order, and a very Pleasant fraternal reunion will take place. ‘The services of the League of the Sacred Heart took place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church last night and was largely attended. Rev. Father Cutler conducted the services. Evangelist Mathews gave another of his interesting Bible talks at Christ P.E.Church here last night. Mr. Mathews’ thorough ac- quaintance with biblica! literature and his ample facility of illustration render his Bible talks very interesting and draws large crowds. ee ANACOSTIA. Anacostia Tent, No. 138, Independent Or- der of Rechabites, held its regular session on Tuesday evening last at Haines’ Hall, Chief Ruler James H. Dony presiding and Thomas W. Scott recording secretary. Af- ter the transaction of routine business one application for membership was received. | On Tuesday, the 17th instant, will occur the | grand visitation of the grand officers of the District to Anacostia Tent, when a royal time is anticipated. The grand visitor and lecturer, S. R. Mundell, will deliver his first Official charge to the tent. The funeral of Harriet Eugenia McGill, the infant daughter of George E. and Laura ‘V. McGill, whose death occurred at the res- idence of its parents on Jeiferson street on Thursday morning at 4 o'clock, took piace from Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 1 o'clock today. Mr. Thomas Harris, a late resident of Pennsylvania, has removed to Oxon Hiil, Ma. The brothers John and Douglass Paine of Oxon Hill will leave for Colonial Beach on next Thursday to fulfill a contract for plas- tering three summer hotels at that river- side resort. Miss Fannie Littleford of Rellevue Maga- zine, is visiting friends in East Washington. Mrs. Stephen Wright of Bellevue is con- valescing from a severe illness. _> HYATTSVILLE. A number of citizens met at the residence of Mr. Charles E. Beech last Thursday evening and temporarily organized a Citi- zens’ Improvement Committee. Mr. Charles E. Beech and Mr. T. M. Moran were made temporary president and secretary, respec- tively. tion is to act as an advisory committee to the town commissioners, in recommending certain improvements in property. It is thought that a prize will be offered to the citizen who keeps his property in the best condition. The secretary was instructed to communicate with other erganizations and Procure copies of their constitutions, so that the committee might draft one of a strailar order. The next meeting will be held at Mr. Beech’s residence on Thurs-| day evening, the 12th instant, when a per- Manent organization will in all probability be effected. The committee appointed to wait upon the county commissioners and urge the building of an eddition to the school house of Chillum saw the commissioners a few days since in reference to the matter, and ‘were informed that the desired addition would be built as soon as practicable. A musical, literary and dramatic enter- tainment will be given by the Eckington Dramatic Club at Grange Hall, Chillum, @ the 2th instant. TAKOMA PARK. Takoma Lodge, No. 24, I. O. O. F., held their weekly meeting in Moses’ Hall, Brightwood, on Thursday evening, when it was determined to replace the parapherna- lia which was destroyed by the fire last December, when this lodge lost all their re- alla, &c. The metings, pending the build- ing of “Takoma Hall,” will be held in Brightwood. The result of the trips of Mayor Maris and Town Clerk J. B. Kinnear to Rockville, | Annapolis and Marlboro’ is evidenced by the passage of the legislature of the bill containing our town charter as amended at @ meeting Weeks since. Much interest is centering in the election of mayor and council, which will take place here on the first Monday in May. Spilman, first grade teacher of the Brookland School, who was buried from her home in Washington this afternoon. Miss Spilman was a faithful and earnest teacher and died almost at her post of duty, having left her school room on the 27th of March, and had lovingly devoted herself to her lit- tle pupils in spite of failing health. A num- ber of her pupils, with the faculty of the school, paid their last respects to their dear friend today with graceful floral tributes. ——— FALLS CHURCH. J. H. Jenkins, pastor; Rev. B. W.
