The excursionists were from Pennsylvania on an excursion schedule gotten up by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Supt. Holden, with his usual accommodating spirit, gave special attention to the excur- sionists, who were much gratified. The two local elections to occur here next month are already exciting considerable at- tention. Among the candidates to fill a vacancy from the first ward are Messrs. Harry Burke, Peter Aitcheson and Capt. A. J. Fair. For the vacancy in the alder- men from the third ward, Messrs. L. C. Barley, E. E. Downham and C. B. Mar- shall are mentioned. Mrs. Virginia Baggott, teacher of Lee Publie School, No. 5, died this morning at the residence of her nephew, Mr. tienry J. Nevitt, on Columbus street, near Cam- eron. Mrs. Baggott was born in this city nearly three-quarters of a century azo. She was the daughter of Capt. Joseph Nevitt, well known on the hesapeake rivers fifty years ago. She married Mr. John Baggott. and survived him many For the last forty years she has engaged in teaching in this city. At first at her own private school and afterwards in the public school system. She was a most estimable matron, and gerved the public well in her vocation. Her death creates a vacancy in the school System, but her school has been very ef- fectively cared for during her illness by Miss Finch, a substitute teacher. The clerk of the school board has been authorized to issue extra permits to Milton Summers and to Joseph Harris. The “Lives of the Governors of Virginia” by Miss Smith, daughter of the late F. L. Local option went into effect in Laurel six years ago the Ist of next May, and since that time but three persons have been arrested for illegal liquor selling, the third being arrested on Tuesday and fined $50 by Justice Conaway. Judging from this fact, the lew must be very much respected and obeyed. Rev. J. H. Kuhlman of the M. E. Church South, who has been pastor of Laurel cir- cuit, has been sent to Virginia by the re- cent conference held in Fredericksburg and Rev. Mr. Sites comes here. Maj. F. B. Little, post office inspector, who was the principal witness against the celebrated confidence man convicted re- cently and sent to the penitentiary in Ten- nessee, is home on a short visit. Last night a very well attended donation party was given at the parsonage of Cen- tenary M. Church to Rev. L. A. Thirl- keld. Instrumental and vocal music was the feature of the evening. It is thought that it will not be necessary for the preach- er’s family to visit a grocery store for some time te come. Charles H. Stanley is quite sick, and has not been able to attend to business for some time. From the action of the legislature it does not seem that the boulevard will be built this year, but the wonderful pewers granted the Baltimore and Columbia Company may be employed in this direction. The base ball season is about to open here, and the Laurel club would like to hear from some of the Washington nines. Geo. E. Asso- ciation, was held last night in the Epworth M. E. Church at Gaithersburg. Mr. Geo. F. Pollock, president of the Montgomery Association, presided over the deliberations of the meeting and delivered the opening address. The devotional exercises were conducted by Rev. Wm. C. Brian, pastor of the church. An interesting address was also delivered by Rev. George H. Nock, state organizer of Sunday schools. Many questions of importance to the schools were discussed by those present, and the proceedings throughout were of a very interesting character. Dr. Charles H.
