Hundreds of Pupils Panic-Stricken and Several Jump From Windows. Fire in the South Evanston, Chicago, pub- Uc school yesterday caused a panic among the pupils. Several of the children jumped from the fourth floor and were injured, but only three of them were padly hurt. Those whose injuries may prove fatal are: Newell Simonds, head and shoulders in- jured. Ella Saggart, legs broken. Percy Bradley, internally injured. Esther Burden, fatally injured about head. Carrie Johnson, burned, probably fatally. Frank Johnson, fireman, cut by broken glass. Samuel Mack, expressman, crushed by falling debris. Miss Foster, a teacher in a lower grade, discovered the fire just as the children were preparing to go out for recess. She had gone to a closet for her hat and had no oner opened the door than flames burst into the room with a roar. ‘The children were, paralyzed with fear for an instant and made no effort to escape. | Then they fell to screaming and all rushed to the doors? Miss Foster ran hastily upstairs to ‘he of- | fice of F. W. Nichols, the principal, and the panic-stricken pupils followed her, blind with fright. Principal Nichols warned the teachers in other rooms as soon-as he could, and tele- phoned to the fire department. Before the engine arrived, however, the flames had made such headway that the building was past saving. In the meantime the greatest excitement and confusion reigned In the school becuse. Five hundred children and a dozen teachers were trying to escape through the front door. The flames soon cut off the hall leading to ‘the rear entrance, and a rush was made for the other exit. There were 200 pupils on the first floor; most of them ran out to the yard. Some of the last to reach the door became terrorized at the sight of the flames raging at their backs and rushed upstairs. Those on the second and third floors were coming down in charge of the teachers, who tried to pre- serve order. Some of the pupils ran to the windows in the hallway on the third floor and raised them. People below shouted to them to re- main quiet, but several clambered out on the ledges prepared to jump. The firemen were endeavoring to lift lad- ders to the windows, while the parents in the yard and streets about the school house were shouting to the children clinging to the windows to hang on or go back and descgnd the stairs. Finally a boy stood up in a third-story window and jumped to*the ground, forty feet below. It was Newell Simmons. He fell on his shoulder and was picked up senseless. Almost immediately afterward, Esther Burden leaped from an adjacent window on the same floor. Another girl, named Sexert jumped, striking squarely on her feet ai sank to the ground with a shriek of pain. Physicians say that her right leg ts broken and that she may have sustained serious internal injuries. The firemen rescued several children who —s perched on the window ledges ready to rop. During the fire the burning building was surrounded by a crowd of men and women whose children were in danger, and who added to the intense excitement by striving to break through the police lines and rescue the imprisoned little ones. After the building was thought to be de- serted a fireman found ten-year-old Lucy Hostible unconscious on the third floor. She was badly burned and her recovery is doubtful. The building was valued at $50,000 and was a total loss. eee, KILLED BY A MOTHER. A Young Man Against Whom Her Daughter Made Charges. Not quite a month ago a youth of nine- teen, son of a farmer: residing on the Cottage Toll Bridge road, about six miles from Norfolk, Va., called at the residence of Henry Hugo, also a farmer, residing near him, and, finding his young daughter, sixteen years of age, alone, effected her ruin. A few days since the young girl was taken sick. Her condition becoming serious, she was removed to the St. Vin- cent’s Hospital at Norfolk. Yesterday her mother visited her, and found her in a critical condition. Here she learned for the first time that her daughter was suffering from a terrible disease. The girl then disclosed to her mother what had occurred, and made charges against Frank Watts. The mother became frantic, and, without seeking advice or assistance, obtained a re- yolver, and went in search of young Watts, finding him at Lee’s store, near her resi- dence. She @rew the revolver, fired two shots into his back, killing him instantly. M>es. Hugo, in company with her husband, returned to Norfolk and gave herself up. oe Ferdinand Ward's Marriage. Ferdinand Ward of New York and Miss Belle Storer of Staten Island were marzied at the residence of Dr. J. A. West, at Gene- seo, N. Y¥.. last evening, Rev. George K. Ward of Dansville, a cousin of the groom, officiating. The lady is a fine-looking woman, highly cultured, and the daughter of John T. Storer of Staten Island, a wealthy owner of the clay banks there. She is a niece of M. Storer of New York, a retired merchant. The wedding was a very quiet one, none being present except a few of the very intimate friends, among whom was the uncle of the bride. The newly married couple propose, after Mr. Ward settles up his business in New York, to re- turn to Geneseo, where, he says, they will reside for a time, although he has no definite plans for the future. Mr. Ward looks a little thin, but is in good health and spirits. soe $1.25 to Baltimore, Via the B. and O.
