AM that Alexandria has left of the more chan half million of dollars expended on account of the Alexandria canal is now the locks and the land once occupied by the canal extending on the north side of Mont- Somery street from Pitt street to the Po- tomac river. This was fortunately saved by a lucky purchase at the judicial sale of the canal. There is in the locks a large quantity of fine red sandstone, and in tne lock pools a considerable quantity of gneiss and biuestone. A portion of this stone has already been used in the abutments cf Hooft’s run bridge, and there is a proposal to break up the stone in the lock pools and use it im the macadamiging of streets in this city. What will be done with the fine cut stone of the locks has not yet been de- termined; meanwhile, the city has gained some small profit from leases of the river front of the canal, and the committee on public property is now considering a propo- Sai from a manufacturing enterprise which proposes to establish works there. Newton, who resides on Jack- son street east of Taylor, has, by letter, called the attention of the Commissioners to the neglected condition of that portion of that thoroughfare, in which he complaia- ed that in case of a freshet, or continued spell of wet weather, the street is almost impassable to pedestrians by reason of the failure on the part of the authorities to Provide a suliable footway to span the branch which crosses the street, having no outlet, save a six-inch sewer pipe, to carry off the overflow. Mr. Newton has asked that the square be graded and paved, to} which request the early attention of the Commissioners has been promised. On last Friday night the residence of Mr. James Green on the Asylum Farm, was bright with the presence of a large party of young people from Anacostia and vicinity, who had come to remember the birthday of Mrs. Green. Beall upon the regular question seleczad for the evening—‘Potatoes.” The best meth- od of selecting and preparing seed, the best Mapner of planting and working, and the character of land best adapted to the crop. ‘The following formula was recommended as @ fertilizer for potatoes: Dissolve South Carolina rock, 12 per cent of 1,000 pounds; tankage, 200 pounds; manure, 700 pounds: sulphate of potash, 100 pounds; total, 2,000 bounds. This fertilizer will cost about $10.75 per ton, and from #0 to 700 pounds should be used to the acre. The club recommended the use of plaster with Paris green as a bug destroyer. It was resolved that the club should earnestly request the passage of the fertilizer bill now pending before the legislature, and a committee, consisting of Messrs. J. D. Cassard, Dr. R. S. Hill and Dr. McDonald, was appointed to urge its passage. This committee visited Annapolis today. The club also resolved that the Prince George's members of the house of delegates be requested to use their influence to secure the passage of the bill increasing the license fee for stallions from $10 to $25, with the amendment that the groom be re- quested to carry his Hcense with him, to be exhibited to every person requiring the serv- tee of the stallion, the additional $15 to go to the county. The decoration of the chaacel in Trinity Episcopal Church during the past week has greatly enriched this portion of the chapel. ‘the designs for this work were pre- pared by the rector, Nev. Shipman has rented the house) of Cannon & Chandler on Washington street, ———— ROCKVILLE, Saturday night another cne of those dis- graceful occurrences so frequent on the midnight train from Washington took place between Kensington and Garrett Park. Among the passengers on the train was a colored man named William Bell, a resi- dent of Garrett Park, where he is in the employ of Mr. J. T. Kelley. He had bought @ ticket in Washington for Kensington,and failing to get off at that station he was approached by Conductor Martin, who de- manded his fare. Upon his refusing to pay @ row occurred, in which the negro was struck with a blackjack, and upon the ar- rival of the traip at Garrett Park, he drew a@ revolver and fired at the conductor. The | shot not taking effect, he was at once ar- rested by the conductor, with the assist- ance of several passengers, and brought to this place, where he was placed in the custody of Sheriff Mullican. He was ufter- ward taken before Justice Morgan, after hearing the stat ductor committeed Bell to jail for a fur- ther hearing on Monday afternoon. John Jenkins, the colored man who last October shot and dangerously wounded Newton Smith near Darnestuwn, and who after his arrest made his escape trom Sherif Fairall, was y trom Washington, where he had been | apprehended by the police, and is now safely lodged in jail. Jenkins says that a few days after his escape trom the sheriff he made his way across the Potomac into Loudoun county, Va., ‘vhere he has since been at work until a short ume ago, when getting out of employment he way to Washington, supposing he would be safe there. When found, from the general ap- pearance of the body, it had been suspend- ed for several days. A large handkerchief was used for the purpose, one end of it being tied to the ‘imb of the tree and the other around his neck. When found his feet were nearly touching the ground. At 4 o'clock Justice Thomas at the station was informed of the finding of the body and immediately organized a cor- oner’s jury to make an invesiigation of the | case. The young suicide appeared to be | lowing about eighteen years of age, was of rather light complexion and was dressed in good | clothing. Kenly Command, No. 7, Union Veterans’ Union, and to listen to several distinguished speakers.
