The board of stewards was voted the right to use the proceeds from the sule of the old burial ground at Hagerstown tor the church debt. Local Changes in Pulpits. There were more surprises than usual when the appointments at Frederick, Md., yesterday were read, especially when most of the membership were aware that but few of the ministers had served out their Umit of five years. Some who expected to remain at their charges were sen: to other | fields, and some who expected to change re- main as last year. Rev. H. R. Naylor, the presiding-elder of Washington district, gives way to Rev. L. B, Wilson, whose retention at Wesley was strongly urged, and Dr. Naylor takes charge of South Baltimore station, a strong appointment. In this district there are some quite un- expected changes. Rey. J. B. 3tict from Baltimore succeeds Dr, Elliott at Dumbar- ton Street, Georgetown, the latter naving been transferred. Rev. Dr. George H. Co- rey, formerly of Metropolitan, takes charge | of a new enterprise-in the nelziborhool of Dupont Circle. Rev. Dr. J. N. Davis, who | has served Fifteenth Street, g02s to Rom- ney, W. Va., and is succeeded by Re W. Van Arsdale, who went into the m: try from this city many years ago. Rev. C. O, Cook, who has served North } Capitol for five years and ‘uilt up quite a strong congregation, is sent tu Flete! lieving Rev. W. H. Laney, who takes a country appointment. Rev. C. L. Pate, who a few years since succeeded to the charge of Tweifth Street, East Washington, wkes North Capitol Street Church, Rev. J. M. Sharrow now taking Twelfth Stree: Rev. Samuel Shannon, who has served Grace for three years, is succeeded by Rev. V | aon Case, and Mr. Shannon goes to Kings- ey, in Frederick district. -_ AMUSEMENTS. The Stoddard Lectures—Crowded audi- ences listen with delight to John L. Stod- aard’s lecture on “Pleturesque Japan” at the Academy and are enthusiastic about the fine illustrations, which cannot justly be classed as mere photography, but may lay claim to excellence as art.’ This lecture will be given again this evening, and will be heard for the last time at next Satur- day's matinee. For the last three evenings of this week the lecture will be upon “The Heart of Old | Japan. This, like its predecessor, will be | crowded with observations of its interesting people. Mr. Stoddard’s route of travel led | him among the common people in the In- | terfor, so that the scenery of Japan receives | especial treatment. The illustrations of the mountain passes, the pleasant retreat on the shores of the Pacific, of beautiful Fuji- yama, of the old temple city of Kioto give every possible opportunity for the display | of Japanese life and art To -Lecture on Hawali—At Carroll In- stitute Hall this evening Chief Engineer Harrle Webster, United States navy, will | deliver a lecture on Hawaii. The lecture will be illustrated by at least one hundred views of the scenery of the islands, and ¥ fll | be delivered under the auspices of the Miz- |pah branch of the Minfstering Children’s League for the benefit of the poor fund of the league. —— The body of the man found near Black- wood, N.
