Y., dispatch says: The mystery uttending the -Cornell freshman banquet tragedy already gives new promis- es of speedy solution. In conjunction with the clues pertaining to the auger purchased at Rumsey’'s, the permanganate potassium, obtained at Druggist Haskins’, the detec- tives will be furthered in their efforts by the confession of one of the perpetrators, who, thus far, has refused to make any dis- closures because some of his colleagues are unwilling to concur in the step. The jug story proves to be true in !ts es- sential particulars. The occupants of the house at 6 Cook street disclaim any knowl- edge of its purchase or its use. One of the gentlemen who rooms there, however, has left the city, and, according to the latest developments, did so because he feared de- tection. The subject of the banquet has monopoliz- ed the conversation of the townspeople, as well as the students, and Professor Collin of the school of law devoted his tall: with the students yesterday to the subject of the punishment that would be meted out to the culprits when apprehended. The students bore the expenses of the funeral of Mrs. Jackson, which was held at the Zion M. E. Church yesterday after- noon. The faculty have adopted resolutions, and the students are preparing to nold a gen- eral mass meeting to discusz the unfortu- nate result of the banquet, and will proba- bly state the position of the student body in the matter of the tragedy. The public await with the deepest anxiety the promised disclosures of the student who stated that it was his intention to make such a disclosure. Carl Dingens, the Cornell sophomore who is now suspected of complicity in the Ithaca chlorine tragedy, and is reported missing from college, is not in Buffalo at home. His father, Joseph A. Dingens, \m- mediately upon reading the press dispatches mentioning his son’s name, started for Ithaca. His brother John said that noth- ing had been heard from Carl by the fami- ly, and that they were eagerly awaiting some tidings from him or his father. ————__+e+____ THE PEERS BACK DOWN. Their Admendments to the Parish Councils’ Bill Withdrawn or Modified. The British peers considered the reasons advanced by the house of commons for dis- agreeing with the amendments to the parish councils bill, adopted by the house of lords. The Duke of Devonshire dwelt upon the importance of the functions of the house of lords in raising a barrier against legislation which the country, as in the home rule measure, condemned, but, he added, it might impair the strength for good of the house of lords if it insisted upon amending the details of a bill the principles of which it had accepted. Lord Salisbury did not differ, in the main argument, from the Duke of Devonshire, but said that he would not admit that all the restorations by the house of commons should be accepted. He said that it was impossible to disregard the eifect which the rejection by the house of cummons of all the amendments passed by the house of jords would have on the future rclations between the two houses. The Duke of Devonshire moved amend- ments that the acquiring or hiring of land allotments be subject to the approval of the local board instead of parliament, Both amendments were adopted. The amendment raising the limit ef the parish from 200 to 500 inhabitants was re- scinded. Other amendments which originated in the house of lords were either withdrawn or moditied. coe Newspaper Publishers’ Association. At the meeting of the newspaper publish- ers Association in NewYork yesterday after- noon, the following officers were elected: President, J. W. Scott of the Chicago Her- ald; vice president, E. H. Woods of the Bos- ton Herald; secretary, W. C. Bryant of the Brooklyn Times; treasurer, H. F. Gunnison of the Brooklyn Eagle; executive commit- tee, C. W. Knapp of the St. Louis Republic, N. A. McRae of the Cincinnati Post and the St. Louis Chronicle, and F. Driscoll of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The principal topic of discussion at the meeting was the introduction of the new typesetting machines, which was ably dis- cussed by Mr. McKenney of the N. W. Ayer Advertising Company of Philadeiphia and Mr. Victor F. Lawson of the Chicago News. ee eee Novel Excuse of an Election Board. ‘The election board at Miner's Mills, Pa. neglected to count the vote for Congress- man-at-large on the ground that it was too late, and that they knew Grow would be elected anyhow. The court has ordercd a recount of the vote and called the attention of the district attorney to the flagrant vio- lation of the law. The board will be arrest- ed. AUCTION SALES. __ FU RE DAYS.
