Seven Thousand Persons Cheered the Governor at Chicago. Gov. William McKinley, jr., of Ohio was the guest of the Union League Club of Chi- cago last night, having accepted an invi- tation to address the members on the occa- sion of the anniversary of the birthday of George Washington. When the speaker appeared upon the platform of the Auditorium Theater in the afternoon thére were 7,000 people seated in- side, and out in the street there was a crowd of 3,000 who could not even get standing room within the doors. When the face and head of the great protectionist appeared there was for an in- stant a dead silence. People seemed to be There is no longer any doubt that the republicans and populists will fuse, and this has been the course dreaded by most democrats. It was dreaded in 1892, but it then failed of accomplishment. Now it is a certainty. The coaijition is on the basis that the strongest party in any par- ticular county or district shall make the nominations and that the other shall then support it. This coalition will give a peculiar in- terest to the North Carolina campaign this year. The alliance is still in politics. It claims to be stronger in Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina than in any other states. The election of Marion But- ler of this state as president of the Na- tional Alliance gives the populists an ad- ditional leverage here. Gov. He per- ceived that real liberty must rest cn the basis of popular education. Vance, while it is claimed he has the sympathy and support of the great ma- jority of the democratic rank and file, is yet in great disfavor with many earnest democrats. This is primarily due to a letter which ke wrote to thd Mecklenberg Farmers’ Alliance in 1802. It has been in- tensified by his opposition to the confirma- ton of F. M.
