The appearance of Mr. Gannon of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad as a represen- tative of one interest wishing to obtain the ‘ase of the Staten Island ferry, says a New York special to the Baltimore Amert- can, is taken to mean that the railroad which he represents will be a bidder at the forthcoming Je, and that the Baltimore and Ohio will, in all probability, run its own fe-ry line from St. George, Staten Island, to the battery. There have been so many parties inter- ested in the purchase of the lease that Controller Fitch said he would require the various representatives to put their yrgu- | ments in writing. These argumenis, in sev- | eral instances, take the form of protests against the sale of the franchise to some other party. One of ‘the parties represents the Sea Beach railroad, which operates a short read running from Bay Ridge to Coney Island. | His source of anxiety is not so much the | Staten Island ferry as the ferry from the battery to Bay Ridge, both of which have been operated by the same company. The extensive improvements recenty made at St. George, Staten Island, by the Pal | more and Ohio railroad, and the others un- | de- way, taken in connection with the Ral-, timore and Ohio’s probable acquisition of the Staten Island ferry lease, call attention > the plan already mentioned of establish- ing a route by which freight cars could be shipped by the Baltimore and Ohio directly rom the west to the battery. All that is now needed by that company | to make such a thing practicable is a large dock for freight cars at the battery, and ferryboats of sufficient size to transport them across New York bay from St. George for that road, to be able to land freight on Manhattan Island without disturbing the bulk in which it was shipped would, of | course, be a valuable thing and a proiitable one. Should the Baltimore and Ohio obtain the. lease of the ferry, there is very little doubt that it wiil seek to obtain the neces- sary docking privileges somewhere on the water front, enabling it to do what only one railroad of the many that run toward New York city can do, and that is to land its ars, freight and passengers on Manhattan stand. This is said to be the present pur- , pose of the Baltimore and Ohio in New York. If cacried out successfuily, this scheme would give the Baltimore and Onio a great advantage in the carrying of per- ishable freight either to or from New York city. | Club has with the um, pre: tent; © Combined with Austin Corbin's dream of) establishing a landing place at Montauk Point for the big ocean liners, reducing by | a considerable number of miles the run from Liverpool to America, the Baltimore and Ohlo’s scheme would bring the west many hours closer to Europe. N A MUSEUM. cago Into a Crowded Audience. Wallace, the 500-pound lion which ts on exhibition at a dime museum at Chicago, where he is advertised as the “terrible un- tamed wonder of the world,” escaped from his keeper about 5:30 o'clock yesterday af- ternoon and bounded among the spectators. Broncho Boceacio, an East Indian, who is the lion's keeper and trainer, was about to give an exhibition in the big fron cage. He opened the door to enter, and before he could shut it the Hon leaped from the cage. The theater was crowded, nearly 500 peo- ple being present. A wild panic ensued among the specta- tors. The animal started toward the rear ot the theater amid the shrieks of men, women and children. | Some ran out into the str led up over the sta; into the false boxe: i, others dash- » and two men leaped en either side of the | stage and pulled the lace curtain in front of them to prevent the beast from doing them any hatin. Mothers threw their chil- dren upon the stage, and crowding up after them, dragged them by one arm dowa a narrow in bins and boxes i behind trunks in dr ormers, The lion started for an entran but the trainer stepped in front of m, lashed him fiercely with a whip, grasp- ed him vy the mane and pulied his head to- ward the cage. Lord Dunraven was seen yesterday London in reference to the statement cabled from New York that his representative, Mr. H. Maitland Kersey, had said that Lords Dunraven and Wolverton would make a forma! challenge for a race for the Ameri- ca’s cup in’ 1805. Lord Dunraven was just starting for Bridgend, where he is to deliver a speech in favor of the attitude of the house of lords in its treatment of the employers’ Kability bill. He declined to detinitely affirm the state- |) ment made by Mr. Kersey, but in the course of the Interview admitted that Lord Wolverton and himself would build a seven- | ty-footer for the purpose of challenging for the America’s cup in 1895 under certain conditions. This, however, would be con- | Ungent upon Lord Wolverton’s agreeing to the proposai. Lord Wolverton is now in India, and nothing definite can be arranged until he returns or is communicated with. In due course of time, Lord Dunraven sald, the New York committee would be notified of the decision in the matter. He intimated that Lord Wolverton was most eager for a race, and said that last week he himself had had a seven-hour discussion with Mr. G. L. Watson, the famous yacht | designer, when the details were virtually | settled on ail points. “I will not race the Valkyrie in America in 1804," said Lord Dunraven, “because I cannot have the Vigilant as a competitor. ‘The Vigilant is the only boat I desire to | meet. I shall bring the Valkyrie to Eng- | land, probably, in time to enter her in the Clyde regatia. I am building a twenty-ton- ner, believing that contests between boats of the twenty-ton class will be the most in- teresting yachting events in 1894.” | | ___ AUCTION SALES.
