A number of Washingtonians from St. Matthew's Council, No. 33, and Washing- ton Council, No. 34, of the Catholic Benev- @lent Union, visited this city yesterday afternoon to organie O'Kane Council of that order in this city. The Washington visitors were Prof. J~C. Foertsch, J. W. ‘Warner, Lawrence Mankin, J. J. O'Leary, Michael Freely, H. J. MeGinniss, D. Don- ovan, J. F. McGinniss, Michael Gan- Bon and Judge Fullerton. The council was instituted by Deputy A. C. Kenney of New York. The new cowncil starts under very favorable auspices, with Rev. H. J. Cutler, chaplain; J. P. Quinn, president; John Stone, secretary, and D. J. Normyle, treasurer. The organization took place at the Lyceum Hall on Duke street. The United States District court, Judge Hughes, held a short session here yester- day and heard the case of W. S. Moore v3. the endless chain dredge. Mr. James R. Caton appeared for the plaintiff aad Mr. c. C. Carlin for the defendant. The de- cision was reserved. . Messrs. John H. Green, George R. Shinn, Cc. F. Neale, G. J. West, C. W. Howell and others of this city have obtained a chafter from Judge Norton for the Albemarie As- sociation. designed to establish a library and reading room for the entertainment of the members of the association. Chariez Burkhardt, a pensioner, formerly of the Soldiers’ Home of Washington, was found dead here Saturday at his home, No. &8 Franklin street. The coroner examined the remains and gave a certificate of death from natural causes. Mr. Murray M, Davis has qualified as a Notary public under an appointment ffom Gov. O'Ferrall. A number of Alexandrians visited Wash- fmgton on Saturday night to attentl the lecture of Gen. Gordon at Convention Hall. it is understood here that arrangements are now being made in Richmond, under which vigorous measures will be taken to clear out the gaming houses that now in- fest the Virginia shore opposite the Dis- trict of Columbia. Mrs. Edward Dean, a young matron much esteemed by many friends, died last Satufiay at her home on Wolfe near Lee street. — ANACOSTIA. Miss Annie Skinner, at her pleasant home on Maple avenue, gave another proof of her happy faculty of entertaining young folks on Friday evening last. Healthful and ‘mirth-producing games marked the eorly hours of the evening, followed by dancing and refreshments. Those present were the Misses Signa Guerdrum, Emma Lee, Allie Putnam, Mary B. Messer, Lucy Hollister and Maggie Skinner, Messrs. George Guer- rum, Waiter Lee, James Hollister and Fulton Karr. James Suit of Bladensburg is the guest of Mr. Fielder Magruder of Bald Eagle Hill. ‘The new house on the corner of Jackson and Fendall streets, erected by the Ana- costia Building Association, has been sold to Mr. A. C. Proctor of Washington. Mr. Herbert F. L. Allan of Baltimore is here on a visit to his parents on Jefferson street. Dr. Josiah Harding, an old and estimablé citizen of Montgomery county, Md., passed away on Friday night lagt at 10:30 o'clock. He was born near Rockville some seventy- seven years ago, lived and practiced as @ physician in the vicinity of Sligo since he graduated at Philadelphia. Dr. Harding Was well known in this section, and ¢njoy- ed a lucrative practice. Forty-eight years ago he was married to Miss Mary Val Denor, the Rev. Bishop Pinkney perform- ing the ceremony. He leaves a wife and three children, his son Frank~Miss Hen- rietta and his married daughter, Mrs. W. W. Riley. He Has been a member of Grace M. E. Church during the past twenty-five years. The funeral services took place from the late residence at Woodside yester- day afternoon, Revs. Dr. Smeed and Allen Griffith of Grace Church officiating.
