12 THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1894—-TWELVE PAGES. Mt. Airy, on the main line, was visited by thieves a few nights ago and an entire hind quarter of beef and twenty-five pieces of pork taken. County Constable Adams and Mr. Mullinix traced the tracks of a team from the meat house to the house cf a colored woman, Katie Bostick, where they found half the meat, recovering the balance of it underneath the hay in the stable of Harry Luckett, colored. As they were get- ting out the meat Luckett escaped to the thick woods nearby and has not been csp- tured. The Bostick woman was brought to Frederick, and upon a preliminary hear- ing before Justice Eckstein was committed to jail in default of $200 bail, to await the action of the grand jury. Washington Camp, No. 367, Patriotic Order Sons of America, of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pa., has passed resolutions complimentary to Chief Judge James Mc- Sherry of this city, a synopsis of whose views as to the inadvisibility’ of dividing the public school fund was given in The Evening Star at the time. Mrs. Mary E., wife of Geo. J. Butt, who died in Washington a few days ago, was a native of this county and very well known here. Of her surviving children, Mrs. Alice Cashour lives at New London, this county; Mr. S. P. Keller at Laurel, Md.; Mr. Geo. H. Butt at Petersburg, Va.; Miss Lilla ; Warde Butt and Mr. E. J. Nottingham in Washington. The company recently organized to build an electric railway from Myersville, this county, to Middletown are determined that unless the projected road from Frederick to Middletown is built they will extend their road on down the valley from Middle- town to Brunswick. They have nearly dis- posed of the $25,000 worth of bonds to guar- antee the building of their line and expect to have work begin this spring. At the church work convention of the Evangelical Reformed Church, recently held in Woodsboro’, this county, a Reform- ed Church Ministerial Association was or- ganized, composed of ail the Reformed inin- rs in the county, and with the Rev. Dr. R. Erchbach of Frederick as presiden’ and the Rev. Atvill Conner as secretary. Geo. Wm. Smith has bought the Ité-acre farm of the late Col. John B. Thomas, for $9,704. His i4-acre farm was bought by Caleb Lewis, for 36,514, and 33 acres by John F. Knauff, for $sus. a — KENSINGTON. SUBURBAN NEWS. oo os ALEXANDRIA. The city council continued in session un- til midnight last night, being engaged in some of the most important matters that have come before the board for many years. ‘The aldermen completed action upon the scheme for the amendment of the city charter and the matter will now go back to the common council for concurrence, and when a result is reached here the whole scheme will be sent to the general assembly at Richmond. The aldermen struck out the 10 cents per-front-foot tax which, as The Star has shown, is contrary to the constitu- tion of the state. and this amendment wiil certainly be concurred in by the lower board. While the aldermen were busy last night with the charter matter, the council occupied itself in considering the proposals for a bili to be passed by the general as- sembly, authorizing the corporation of Alexandria to borrow $200,000 for streets and sewer improvements. After a long di: cussion the plan was agreed to, 8 to 4, Messrs. Snowdan Moore, Uhier and Evans voting in the negative. The proposed bill was then sent to the board of aldermen, Where it kept that board awake uhtil a jJate hour, and just before midnight the Yote wes taken and the aldermen concurred with the council in adopting the bill. A notable fact appeared last night in the common council while the $200,000 improve- ment bill was under amendment. The orig- inal draft proposed that oniy freeholders should vote upon the acceptance of the plan. Mr. Mushbach moved to strike out ““freeholders™ and insert “white voters;" but it was insisted that colored real estate holders had a stake in the matter, and the board _refused—12 to 2 (Messrs. Mushbach and Fisher)—to adopt the amendment, so that if the vote shall ever be taken in Al- exandria colored real estate holders will have @ vote upon the question, while non- broperty holders will have none. The Deis Company embroglio, reported to The Star yesterday, was made the subject of action at the Fairfax coiirt house yester- day afternoon, and Mr. R. F. Knox, auc- tioneer of this city, was appointed a re- ceiver of the Deis Company's affairs at New Alexandria. A motion to discharge this order will soon be made. The Howard Cassard, new style steamer, is to be brought here from Baltimore and finished at the Alexandria shipyard, where it was originally proposed to build the — steamer Pocohontas of the same style. The corporation court has continued all the criminal cases. It is now engaged with civil suits only. W. G. Platt and others of Takoma have obtaired a charter here for the Takoma Hall Company. Judge Keith has mad: decree here for the sale of the Washington and Arlington Rail- — Company's rights after sitty days’ no- ice. | Several days ago the Home Missionary Sociew of the Methodist Church sent a large barrel of clothing and a box of fruits and jeliies to the Deaconess Home of Washington, for distribution among the poor and sick of that cuy. The goods sent were val- ued at #37. = The parsonage of the Methodist Church was filled with young folks Monday even- ing, the occasion being a surprise party tendered to Miss Lizzie Thompson.
