We should not forget the immense advantages which we had derived from immigration. The claims that our prisons and poor houses were filled with aliens, and that immigra- tion had a tendency to lower the standard of American dignity, were questions de- manding the most careful and honest in- by aliens is not so great as believed. The tendency of Americans is upward, and eigners are needed to take the lower places made vacant. But moral, physical and so- cial conditions must -not be sacrificed to pecuniary gain. Gur policy and genius aim rather to attack an evil than a class. We legislate against crime, not against races. Fair play is our motto, The Sifting Process. ‘The sifting process of immigration shoula be made more exact. No criminals or pau- pers of any nation should be permitted to land. Enforce a rigid obedience ‘to our laws from all classes; break down the Sweating shops, by whomever maintained. We are strong tnough to effect this cor- rective by justice. As Jews and Ameri- cans, we are interested in this question. There is no clashing of interests by reason of this duai nature. Judaism only makes | us truer and better Americans. Shall we imitate the Jews of Egypt and petition the government to exclude the refugees from Russia? Against this our history, our re- ligion, every fiber of our body protests. As Americans, we cannot desert those who suffer from despotism and seek freedom and a home. We muet, as Jews and Ameri- cans, not rest content with allowing them to land. They must be elevated that they shall reflect honor on their race. > DR. TALMAGE TO RESIGN. |The Brooklyn Preacher Annoances His tention to Retire. Rey. Dr. Thomas DeWitt Talmage last night announced to his church, the Brook- lyn Tabernacle, that this coming spring, om his twenty-tifth anniversary as pastor, he uid resign. Dr. Talmage, in making this announcement, said: “This coming spring I will have been pas- tor cf this church twenty-five years, and quarter of « century is long enough for any minister to preach in any one place, At that anniversary I will resign this pulpit, and it will be occupied by such person ap you may select. Though the work has been arduous because of the unparalleled neces- sity of building three great churches, two cf them destroyed by fire, the field has been delightful and biest of God. No other con- gregation has ever been called to build three churches and I hope no other pastor will ever be called to such # fearful under- taking. “My plans after resignation have not been developed, but I shall preach both by voice and newspaper press as long as my life and health are continued.” Dr. Talmage was born in Bound Brook, N. J., January 7, 1882. ——— eee MELLO NO LONGER LEADER. |The Brazttian Have De poned the Admirat, | ‘The minister of foreign affairs of Brasil, acting in behalf of President Peixoto, au- thorized the representative of the United Press at Rio Janeiro to send the following: “It is said by the insurgents that Admiral de Mello has been deposed from his position of leader of the forces operating against the government, because he failed to bring in the bay here in making their proposed land movements.
