A NEW ONE IN SOUTH WASHINGTON Coming Exhibitions of the Y. M. C. A. and C. A. C. CARROLL INSTITUTE The good all-around athlete is the rarest and best product that is ever turned out of a gymnasium. As many pereons es there ere in Washington who h:ve more or less of a reputation :n athletic cireles, the most of them wil! be foun’ to te act. ve mn sam? cone line and little trained in other directions. To every one good all-around man, a dozen specialists may be found. This, of course, a8 in kespins with the tendency in every- thing else, but no matter now gocd a man may be in some one line, if that is all he can ‘lo, he has not reaily a right to a repu- tation as an athlete, Physique or even be actually deformed. Such is a cyclist with a back lke a bow, or the man with a flattened skull who can hold a ton of bricks on his head, but who dies from concussion of the brain, o> lands in an insane asylum to finish his days. It is always taken as a bad sigr: by any one fond of athletics in the widest sense to see another person get wild on any one thing. A Basket Ball League. It is probable that a basket ball league will be formed within a week or so, or not at all this winter. The matter has been talked of for a long time, but nothing has been done, and the game has been dropped entirely by the Columbias and Young Men's Christian Association during the prepara- tion of their exhibitions. Once more, how- ever, it is promised that there is to be a league, and that the move is to be made to- ward its organization. If this move is suc- cessful, there is yet time for a schedule of games to be arranged; if otherwise, the fate of a league is settled for this winter. The Emerald Athletic Club. A new athletic club has been formed in South Washington. It is the Emerald Ath- letic Club, an organization made up of some of the enterprising and well-known young men of that section, who are interested in athletic sports and who want to get to- gether and push matters of that kind in their part of the city. A camera club is now being formed among those interested in photography. The annual dinner will take place on the evening of Shrove Tuesday, February 6, an_the hall of Carroll Institute. Wrestling is occupying a prominent place in the institute now, »nd a good deal is being done in that way. Bridgett, Pierson, Mulhall, Downey, Dr. Sow brothers are doing a xr direction. The bowling alleys were repaired last week, certain portions being smccthed off and the entire surface leveled. The food exposition has driven the mem- bers of the Washington Light Infaxtry Not | from their quarters for a time, but as they been alive more than a week, but it has | are busy preparing fo- their coming enter- already elected its officers, secured quar- ters, purchased some apparatus and is well on the road that leads to success. The first meeting of the club was held last Tuesday night, when the preliminary organization was completed and the club launched forth as a new venture in those parts. ‘The quarters of the athletes are at 316 lith street southwest, just below the bu- reau of engraving and printing, and tie members have already decorated the walis in the true sportsman style, and are rig- ging out the rooms with various con- veniences. The tirst regular meeting of tie club took place last Thursday night, at which time a constitution was adopted and officers were elected. It was decided to make the dues only a small amount per Week, so that membership’ in the club would be within the reach of all. The club is in no sense a social club, calling itself athletic merely in name, but is a live and | active organization which is going iu for | real sport, and expects to achieve a reputa- tion for itself in all sorts of athletics, It now numbers over twenty-five muscular and enterprising young members, and new persons are rapidly joining its ranks. Regu- | lar meetings of this new club will be held | every Thursday night, and its growth, which in the short time since its organiza- tion has been remarkable, will undoubted- ly continue until the club is well known and widely represented by young men from all over South Washington. The Emeraid Athletic Club is destined to succeed, and has wisely chosen three capable and ener- getic officers to look after its welfare. ‘They are Mr. George Main, president; Mr. Vin- cent Donnelly, secretary, and Mr. Clarenec Beach, treasurer, all of whom are most heartily interested in the future of the club, and in its success. It has elected the following board of directors for the coming year: William A. Richards, James T. Summers, Henry Storey, Austin S. Frankiin, Thomas Martin, | Frederick H. Litchiield, George A. Martin, |E. N. Richards, John Webster, ir. Fyles and L. Simi. From among these tne folicw- ing officers were elected: Willem A. Richards, president; Henry Storey, vice president; E. N. Kichards, corresyonding secretary; Austin S. Fran«lin, treasurer, and George A. Martin, financial secretary. The Rockville Rod and Gun Club has a brilliant idea and is about t>» embark on a big project. It proposes tu etcck Mcnutgum- ery county with quail. ‘vast winter the ex- treme cold killed off a great many and gur- ing the past fall the hunting was not worth the time it took. The club, therefcre, expects to import about WW dozen buds from Kansas and stock the county, ro tat they will have some ‘ive fur when the time comes again. Sa Shrewdness His Strong Point. From the Chicago Post. “My prospects,” said the young lawyer with animation, after he had greeted the business man. “Why, sir, they were never 80 good as they are now. I have been re- tained in the McWilliger will case, and there is certainly $500 in that. Then I have been asked to act as junior counsel in the Interoceanic railway suit, and there is cure to be a big sum in that. 1 received a re- tainer today to take a libel suit against the Weekly Whoop, and I have some bills out that I ought to get remittances on in a week or two. Yes, sir, things are booming with me, and inside of sixty days I will be in a better financial condition than 1 ever was in my life before. You know how it goes when a man does get started up.” Then he said “Good day” to the business man, and passed on with the friend who was with him. And the friend thought the matter over and then said: “See here! That’s a very different story from the one you told Bilkins yesterday.” “Of course it is,” said the young lawyer. “You told Bilkins that you were nearly discouraged; that you had hard work get- ting what was due you, and that new cases that had any money in them were few and far between.” “Exactly. I was afraid Bilkins intended to = me for a loan.” “But you've just told Wilber that th’ never looked so promising, and that 7 have money to throw to the birds within sixty days.” “Certainly. I expect I'll have to ask him for a loan of $100 or so in a day or two.” “Which story was 2 right? Neither wholly, and both partly.” REPORT OF THE CONDITION ‘Of the GERMAN AMERICA) December Office: SLL Tth st. aw, RESOUKCES. Cash tn office and bank. Loars on real estate. ‘Ki iy MAY, BG. Hl. H. Mooney and Frank Johnson will hold three men on their shoulders and two around the body, a very creditable performance.
