He Was One of the Best Known News- paper Correspondents. Frank A. Burr, who died yesterday at Camden, N. J., was one of the most widely known of American newspaper correspon- dents. He began iis newspaper career in this city. After the war closed he secured a position in the government printing of- fice. He had been there only a short time when he secured a position in the compos- ing room of the Washington Chronicle, the editor of which was Col. John W. Forney, then secretary of the Senate, and also edi- tor and publisher of the Philadelphia Press. In sketching his life the Philadelphia ‘Times says: William C. MacBride, a correspondent of the Cincinnati Enquirer, was then city edi- tor of the Chronicle, and in consequence of Burr, the printer, accidentally writing a clever account of a fire late one night he gave him a position as a reporter. That was Frank A. Burr's entrance into journalism. It became his duty every right to wait upon Col. Forney in his pri- vate apartments and write down for him any matter that he wished to dictate for the columns of the Chronicle. Colonel Burr for a while was in the gov- ermnent employ as chief of the Patent Of- fice Gazette. Then he found his way back to West Virginia and entered politics. He was for a while state's attorney of a coun- ty, and afterward ran for Congress on the republican ticket in a district overwhelm- ingly democratic, In making his canvass he traveled through the mountains astride a horse, distributing Kisses to the babies and calico to the wo- men in a way that won votes, but although he reduced the opposition majority several thousand, he failed of election. Largely through his efforts and management Henry G. Davis, who had begun life like himself as a poor boy, but had become a million- aire, was elected United States Senator for West Virginia. *For some time Burr was superintendent of Davis’ great estate at Deer Park. But the glamor of newspaper life had en- vironed him and he could not resist its fas-inations. He became a Washington correspondent. The New York Herald employed him to report the famous Ketcham murder triat at Annapolis, Md., and by direction of the elder Bennett he had the dead general's stomach analyzed and employed the medical experts whose testimony acquitted the wo- man d-fendant. Subsequently Senator Davis furnished Burr the capital to start the Pottsville Standard, one of the most re- markable and brilliant newspapers that ever flashed across the firmament of Penn- sylvania journalism. But the paper was manifold. It is intimately connected with of the Lord’s day is inseparably linked with | the industrial prosperity of a people.
