THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1893-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. Any project for improving the connection ~etween Alexandria and Washington at- .racts attention here. The proposed new ferry company recently mentioned in The Btar will, it is expected, be organized early mext year. Among the suggestions of new routes is one for a steamer to carry the elec- tric cars in a direct line to a ferry wharf at the mouth of James creek and thence by track along the bank of the creek and by Canal street to a point near the southwest edge of the Capitol grounds. It is certain, however, that very soon connections between Alexandria and the capital of the nation will be improved both in number and speed. It turns out that the report to the police of an alleged case of infanticide in this city ‘was a mistake. A colored girl gave birth to a deformed babe and the malformation was taken as evidence of criminal work. It turned out, however, on investigation, that the babe had never breathed and was born dead; so a colored woman named Abby Will- iams, who was charged with malpractice as a midwife, was discharged, nothing being found against ner. The funeral of Mrs. Judith B. Price, the widow of Capt. Ellis L. Price, who formerly commanded the steamer George Page, ply- ing between this city and Washington, took place this afternoon from her late home en Alfred near Cameron street. ‘The Guild of Mercy of St. Paul's Church kept open house at St. Paul's lecture room on Pitt and Duke streets today, as did St. Joseph Union of St.,Mary’s Church et St. Mary’s Hall on Royal and Wolfe streets. | At both places considerable donations in aid of the poor were received. Dr. Howard of Washington has purchased for $:.500 the handsome modern residence of brick and stone on Washington street between Princess and Oronoko streets, late- ly owned and occupied by Dr. W. G. Ashby. Mayor Strauss added $20 to the corpora- | tion treasury by fines at the last session er | the mayor's court. Alexandria-Washington Lodge, No. Free Masons. with a number of members of Mr. Wright, 2 Andrew Jackson Lodge, will attend the funerai of Mr. Julian F. Young tomorrow afternoon. } ———_ HYATTSVILLE. ‘The Gastronomic Prize Club met and com- pieted its organization at the home of Mrs. Crutehet on Monday night. There were present: Capt. and Mrs. W. A. Bartlette of Highlands, Mr. and Mrs. Gramlich, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Giusta, Mr. and Mrs. Baukhages, Dr. and Mrs. H. S. Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. ‘Tise, Mr. and Mrs’ A. Carr, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Crutchet and the Misses Carr, Hall, Baukhages, Tise and Crutchet. The next meeting will take place at the residence of Mrs. Tise on the second Monday in January, when a prize will be awarded for the best specimen of cookery. Mr. and Mrs. B. Ashby Carr have been | visiting the parents of the former on John- son avenue. The Hyattsville Reading Club met last evening and decided to postpone further meetirgs of the club till the first Tuesday after New Year. It is highly probable that this organization will, at that time, merge into a literary society on a much larger scale than at present. Mr. P. M. Leakin, the popular station agent at this place, and family have moved into the Schoepf home for the winter. ‘The Sunday school teachers of the Pinck- ney Memorial Church met at the residence of Mr. Clarence Wilson last evening and completed arrangements for the Christmas Sunday sehool entertainment. A meeting will be heid this evening in the Mechanics’ Hall here for the purpose of re- organizing the Webster Debating Society. The next meeting of the Vansviile Farm- ers’ Club will be held at the residence of Col. Wm. P. Davis in Washington, D. C., on the evening of the 20th proximo. Messrs. A. J. Bennett, Samuel Beall and John Snowden have been aypointed a committee to inspect the host's premises. The ques- tion for is “Why Do Young Men Leave the Farm?” ‘The question of a sewerage system and water works for Hyattsville is claiming considerable attention. It {s not at all un- likely that an effort will be made to get the here to ask the legislature of Maryland for authority to issue bonds for these ,much need improvements. it is thought the $25,000 will be sufficient to poor En Work and the balance will be forthcoming as the exigencies of the case gemand. 1 i} i —-_—_ FREDERICK. “he breach of promise case in the Carroll county cireuit court, of Elizabeth Ann Aw- ings against Lloyd B. Shipley, both promi- nent residents of Westminster, has result- ed in a verdict of $3,000 damages for the plainti®, who sued for $10,000. The case | was on triai several days and attracted a reat deal of attention. The new bridge across the Potomac river at Harper's Ferry, in building for the Bal- timore and Ohio Railroad Company, is fast | nearing completion. It has been decided to; use it for railroad purposes solely, convert- ing the old bridge to the use of teams and pedestrians. Samuel Green of Myersville, this county, who has been teacher of the public school at Adamstown, this county, has recently been appointed to a position as mail agent on the Baltimore and Ohio between | oe and Grafton, by way of Wasn- | zton. Adam Robinson, the colored man touna | sulity in the circuit court here Monday on | two charges of iarceny, has been sentenced to six years imprisonmen: in the Maryland peniteatlary. An interesting decision has been rendered im the court here, involving the question of the responsibility of farmers ror accidents to workmen in their employ. Wm. Shuff was employed by Elias Brandenburg on his farm in the western part of the county, and was nodding on a load of wheat shocks, Brandenburg himself driving the team. Suddenly the team and its contents, in- cluding Shuft, upset down the side of a hill, and Shuff sustained a sprain of one of his legs, which contined him to the house un- der a surgeon's care for three months. He sued Brandenburg before a magistrate for $25 damages. The decision was against dim, the magistrate deeming him guilty of con- tributory negligence. He appealed from the decision, and the jury, after being out eight hours, gave a verdict in his favor, and assessed his damages at $40. Mrs. Sarah Ann Gorsuch died in West- minster on Saturday night of pneumonia, aged sixty-five years. She was a member of an old aud distinguished Maryland family, and widow of the late Robert D. Gorsuch of Carroil ty. She was a daughter of | the late Nimrod Gardner and a sister of Dr. i Frank Gardner and E. Nelson Gardner of | Baltimore, George W. and Wm. Gardner of | Srederick county. She was a sister-in-law ef Thomas Gorsuch, president of the First | National Bank of Frederick, and leaves al daughter and two sons—Miss Norah Gor- | such of Westminster, E. Benjamin Gorsuch | of Kansas City, Kan., and A. Peyton Gor- such of Catoctin Furnace, this county. The people in the neighborhood of Lib- erty, this county, were thrown into a wild state of excitement Monday evening when a large brown bear that had been brought there by a traveling showman escaped from its master and started on a rampage. The alarm was sent out to the farmers along the road to Westminster, which was the direc- tion his bearship took, and means were taken to protect cattle, horses and other stock. A party was organized search of the hungry animal, but up to ‘Tuesday afternoon he had not been caught. Otto S. Graver, the recently defeated | eandidate for sheriff on the democratic | *tcket, is to have the place of storekeeper | At Aholt’s distillery, in this county, and fohn C. Hogan is to be stamp collector in he internal revenue office here. —_——_-— ANACOSTL Mr. Thomas A. Murray has re-entered the employ of his uncle in Philadelphia, with whom he learned the undertaking business. xis family will join him, after spending the Christmas holidays with iriends here. In The Star of the Sth instant a descrip- tion was given of the birthday party of Benjamin F. Barnes, who had reached his twenty-first year on December 6. On this occasion his many | wish him a joyful voyage through life. Yes-| terday these friends were coming and going | to look at him in the stillness of death, ard sympathize with the parents in their svd- den bereavement. A day or two after the happy celebration of the attainment of his manhood he was suddenly stricken with pneumonia, which terminated fatally cn the evening of Monday last at 7:30 o'clock. The funeral services took place yesterday at the | residence of his parents at 1:30 o'clock, the Rev. G. H. Zimmerman of the M. E. Church near the Four Corners officiating. After services at the house the remains were cun- veyed to Rock Creek cemetery and interred. The following named friends of the deceased acted as pall bearers: Archibald Nichols, Herbert Hardesty, Plummer Rhine, George Hardesty, Charles Harvey and Charles Hardesty. It Was an Imitation of Carmencita the Patronesses W j\dn’t Allow It A Camden, N. J., dispatch says: There ts | a bitter dissension among Camden's four hundred, and it all grew out of the kirmess of Friday and Saturday nights. The pro- ceeds of the entertainment are to go to- ward a park some of the women are trying to establish.for the poor mothers and chil- dren. Miss Mary Mant, whose parents live in the olf Starr mansion, had announced be- forehand that she could be counted on for a skirt dance. There was some opposition at first on the part of certain of the patron- esses, but this was finally overcome and the young lady was permitted to go on as the leader in the Spanish dances, She gave the dance on Friday night, and the audience fairly went wild over her most clever imitation of Carmencita. She car- ried off the honors of the evening. On Sat- urday night she was given no intimation that she was not to he allowed to dance. She stood in the wings ready to follow the Spanish dancers, but the moment that Mark Hassler’s baton was to have fallen to lead the orchestra with her music and just as she was about to step out the German air fell upon her ears and the troupe of Ger- man dancers tripped past her and onto the stage. She indignantly demanded to know why she had been treated thus and was told by | one of the patronesses that Hassler had | forgotten his music and by another that the audience wanted a change. But the patronesses had had a most stormy meeting among themselves. Some wanted the dance cut out; others did not. The former finally carried the day and at the last moment had given the order to omit the dance. It was hinted that it was Miss Mant's made. To this her friends reply that the objectors wore costumes, calling them even- ing dress, that were far less modest than was the attire of the skirt dancer. Miss | Mant’s friends also add that it was jeai- ousy, pure and simple, on the part of other dancers that caused the trouble. ‘The patronesses are of the best families man of society to perform such an act in public. i Society as a result is divided, and the, kirmess, instead of proving the best soclety j astrous. oo WANT THE DUTIES RETAINED. Collar and Cuff! Makers Oppose the Wilson Bill. Music Hall, Troy, N. Y., was thronged | Jast night by a crowd of 5,000 people who | attended to protest against the passage of the Wilson tariff bill, in so far at least as | it affects this country’s industries. The | meeting had been arranged by a committee | of nine previously appointed at a citizens’ | meeting. Mayor D. J. Whelan, democrat, presided. Speeches were made by adherents of both parties. | Letters from Congressmen Haines and Curtis and Senator Murphy were read. | Here is Senator Murphy's message: i “I regret that it will be impossible for me to be present with you tonight. You may assure the meeting that [ am in full sympathy with its purposes, as I understand them, and will endeavor, so far as lies in| my power, to see that no injustice is done | to the interests of my native city and state.” A memorial to Congress was unanimously adopted. It asks Congress to let the duties on collars, shirts and cuffs remain as under | the McKinley bill. The meeting closed | with all singing “America.” —— New Congressman From Philadelphia. | Robert Adams, jr., the republican candi- | date, was elected to Congress yesterday from the second Pennsylvania district for the unexpired term of the late Charles O'Neill, by a plurality of more than 10,000. Mr. Adams polled 10,498 votes, while his competitor, Martin I. J. Griffin, the prohibi- tion candidate, received 332 votes.
