Mesmerizing a Young Lady and What and Boat Riding. Prof. Carpenter preached and practiced mesmerism before a throng of folks last night at Grand Army Hall. Some of those present were investigators and others just fun hunters. The latter found it. At first the audience was formal, distant and non-com- mittal. Things warmed up. What had been soberly gloomy became vehemently gay. Serious-visaged people perpetrated antics of exaggerated absurdity. There was @ general getting together under the in- spiration of the hour—of the two hours. Skeptics believed that psychology was phe- momena and admitted that “there was something in it.” Some thought that the work was done with the aid of accom- plices, but this theory, so far as The Star man could discern, was unjust. In the be- sinning the professor discoursed on hypno- tism. The hypnotic state was the dream state. A hypnote was a dreamer. Some People were psychics, others were not. Some people were so susceptive that they believed anything which anybody told them. ‘These were rare an unhealthy cases. Hyp- notism and catelepsy, under proper re- Strictions, were beneficial to the nerve sys- tem. They were tonic. Susceptibility to the influence was not indicative of suft-head- edness, nor was superiority of will indi- cated by ability to withstand the influence. Hypnotism in crime was an absurdity, ‘NTR Scientists might swear to the contrary, but OFFICIAL NOUICEs. WIDMER, KEAL ESTATE, 608 13TH sr. ize No Fan About Bucking Broncos. From the San Francisco Bulletin. “Many peopie have an idea that to ride a bucking bronco is the cowboy’s delight, but they're badly mistaken. There's no fun in it. When a thoroughbred rears and prances there's no jar in it, and I rather like to have one do it if I am riding. But when a bronco bucks end jumps into the air and comes down stiff-legged, with his feet planted together, that jars every bone in the rider’s body, especially the backbone, and is apt to make him feel pretty sick in short order. “My first experience with a bucking bronco cured me of the idea that there was fun in it. I had read that the cowboy always locks his spurs under the bronco’s belly at such times, and so I did the same. Well, the spurs went through the horse- hair cinch, and the brorco kept bucking so long as they staid there. I couldn't get them out till two nen came to help m “The proper thing to do when a %ronco bucks is to keep your spurs away from ALL, Proprietor ‘and Manager. A special dispatch from Brownsville, Tex., says: In Rio Grande City Saturday night Fred Fern, the only American connected with the famous Garza outbreak of the frontier, was found in the agonies of death, having bee: shot. Fern turned states evidence against the Garzaites, and by practical acquaintance with the busi- ness the professor vcwed that he knew whereof he spoke. The French judge who denied the admissibility of expert testi- mony tending to show that Bompard was hypnotically actuated by Eyeraud was @ right and righteous judge. In dreams peo- ple did not commit even fancied atrocities, |if they imagined that they had a hated rival by the throat and were in the act of hurling him over a precipice, they would wake up before that rival went to elory. Thought They Were Policemen. If they dreamt chat they were a member of the metropolitan police force and had got the drop on an alleged slasher, that sun would hang fire; if they had an ax elevated above the neck of an enemy, that Gladstonian chip-splasher wouldn't work. They couldn't do it. Thus it was with subjects of hypnotism. No extrane- |ous influence would persuade a man to do murder unless murder was in that subject's heart. Great secrets could not be ex- tracted by means of hypnotism. aid not tell treasured excrete | in ier ee, because their brain was pregnant with the idea that it must not be told. The pro- fessor then called for subjects from the audience. Several recruits were mustered. They at first were ranged on the front row. He would intently scan an intended victim, put the victim's features through v3 xs -4 sage regime, grip him by the nape of neck, just where the peak of the spinal column collides with the bump of ema- Uveness, and yank him in all directions of the compass at the same time. Then if the conditions were favorable the victim would pass into the dreamland sphere, the operator would snap his fingers in the face of the operatee, cry “all right” and then the patient, with a start, and perhaps a shout, would drop back to earth. He selected the most promising candidates and led them to the stage. He waved his hand at a “sensitive” in the audience and that indi- viduel obeyed his beck. and kept his nose so close to the hand of the professor weg | almost seemed as though he was being led by his olfactorial organ. One of the can- didates for experimental purposes was @ young lady, very gentle. sweet and pretty. Believed She Was a Bird. ‘The operator took her handkerchief, after wafting her into hypnosticity, “od her it was a bird. She believed it. She took the folded handkerchief tenderly, ca- ressed it, fondled it with «irlish affection and coved to it with a maidenly delicacy that made the Ster man buzz, “Oh, would 1 were a bird,” and cdused him almost to forget his vow to iive a bachelor. Then the little lady was told the alleged bird was @ mouse. A vivid shriek of orthodox intens- ity ensued, and the charming maiden climb- ed a chair, displaying just enough ankle to make the reporter sigh like the exhaust pipe of a locomotive and his heart to thump like a pile driver. She and an older lady were then led forward into what were told was a floral Eden. Thev were invited to swipe all the flowers in sixht. They did. They knelt and plucked their laps full of nothing, but of what they thought were flowers. The young lady eved them with @ rapturous glance of dreamy distancy and remarked, “Oh. aren't thev lovely? Oh, how much I should Uke to paint them. Then other non-exirting things were shown them and they saw them fust as clearly as though they did. The professor said it was cold. They buttoned up to the ear-tips, breathed on their fingers. stamped their toes and beat their hands to keep up the circulation. Then the operator led them down into the audience and pointed out @ man, saying that it (the man) was a stove. Imaginary Heat and Cold. They hovered around him. warmed their hands over the top of his head. raked him with a poker, and otherwise professed to get more consolation out of that man than was hitherto believed to exist in the entire species. Then they were invited to take @ coat ride. They were shown a boat that wasn't even as substantial as a mirage. They got in and behaved exactly as folks do under marine conditions. One man took off his coat and pulled with a clock-like stroke that showed him not to have been in the Potomac’s crew at the last reantte. In imagination the craft sprung @ They pulled for the shore. the keel touched the beach, the men took off their coats and shoes. rolled up their trousers and lifted the girls to land ; were developed during the evening. Laugh- ter, laughter, laughter. After the perform- ance the reporter assaulted the voung lady for an interview. She felt as though she had been sleeping. She recollected that hed transpired. “No, really, ai@ T so? Oh, I _cen't believe it. Tell me all about it. It is all a blank to me.” The re- porter sighed, went out and got ow and then wrote this. > ‘The Making of a Tough. From the Providence Journal. She screamed something about her need of water, and a great deal more about her eyes and her fear that she was blinded, The women hystied her into the courtyard behind the barracks where she lived, and began to deluge her face with wate: from @ running hydrant. Litde by little it came out that her boy, Tommy, had come home and demanded tea cents, that he might go to a dime museum “wid de gang. She did not have the money or did not propose to give it to him, and he became angry, and, filling both hands with red pepper, rubbed the stuff into both her eyes before she suspected what he was about or could prevent the act. Tom- my came down while the women were doc- toring his mother, and lurked at a distance, looking on. Suspecting that he might not find favor in their eyes, should any of them see him, Tommy armed himself with an under-sized cobble stone. They did see him, and brandished their great big arms at him, and called him a choice lot of names.
