The Veteran Volunteer Firemen’s As- sociation Holds Another Meeting. A reminiscence meeting of the Veteran Volunteer Firemen was held at the hall. corner of 19th and H streets, last evening, | Mr. James H. Richards presiding, and Mr. J. J. Peabody, secretary. Mr. George Kahl | related that the Columbia suction was in the rotunda of the’Capitol at the library fire over forty years ago. His first fire was known as that of Alexander’s printing of- | fice, 18th and F streets. Mr. Peabody said that credit had not been given the Vigilant | company of Georgetown at the library fire. When the hose of the other companies had been frozen stiff the Vigilant’s hose came | in. At the fire of Senator Benton's house, | on C between 3d and 41-2 streets, the Northern Liberty hose was run from the city hall and the Anacostia forced water from the old canal below Missouri avenue. There was one thing done then which now seemed strange. A hose coupling of the Northern Liberty would not work and he took the file blade of his penknife and filed it so that a joint was made. Messrs. Godwin Pierce and G. W. Good- all spoke of the library fire, the latter stat- ing that the pool from which the water was pumped was very low when the fire was extinguished. Mr. Joseph Williamson related that Maj. B. B. French was the commissioner of pub- He buildings at the time of the library fire. He then related that he was present at the Morocco factory fire near Rock creek, in 1842, and at that time the ice on Rock creek had to be cut. He was present also at the post office fire, and was in the Na- tional Theater when the fire broke out the night of March 5, 1845. The next meeting will be devoted to the reminiscences of the theater fires of 1845 and 1857. Messrs. Williamson, Spilman and Kil- marten were requested to speak. (eI 8 EE District Grand Lodge.
