Australia is ‘fertile in sensations. The latest—a case of disguised sex—is that of Private Jorgensen, late of the Victorian Rifles. Though passing for twenty years under the name of Jack Jorgensen, her real name was Johanna Marguerita Jorgensen. Her career has been of a most extraordin- |ary character. When a pretty girl of six- teen, according to her sister's account, she received a sad disfigurement by a kick on the nose and one of her eyes by a horse. Jorgensen herself accounted for her de- formity by declaring that she received her injuries in the Schleswig-Holstein war, in which she had fought on the side of Ger- many. She showed a medal which she had received for service in the field, and claim- ed to have received special commendation in connection with the wound she sustained. Whichever story be correct, it is clear she commenced her extraot career of masqu as a man nearly a quarter of @ century ago, and, under most unlikely circumstances, preserved the secret of her sex throughout that period. Some twenty years ago she appeared in the Runnymede district of Victoria, dressed as a bushman, and selected a block of land, which she commenced to farm. She, however, did not attend very assiduously to her country | duties, but employed men to clear and fence her selection while she wandered about the colonies delivering rambling lec- tures and canvassing for an insurance com- |pany, The latter found it difficult to get rid of her until a threat of medical examina- tion induced her to retire. One of her strangest escapades was to join the mounted rifies, where her extra- ordinary appearance induced the command- ing officer to mistake her for a Chinaman. She made a good soldier, rode well and ex- hibited knowledge of military service which was in keeping with her story. She was five feet seven inches in height, thick set and strongly built, with a stubby mus- tache. She frequently rode through the streets of Melbourne and on one occasion was selected to form part of the governor's escort, but the officer in command ordered her to stand out on account of her extra- ordinary appearance. The better to sustain her character she often made love to girls and once obtained the consent of a girl's father to marry her. She did not, however, go quite so far as another Victorian celebrity of the same kind named De Lacy Evans, who worked as a miner in the deep claims at Bendigo for years without her sex being discovered, and who was actually married three times in succession to as many women. Jorgen- sen was taken ill with rheumatism recently, but refused to allow a doctor to examine her, though he prescribed for her. On her death a post-mortem was made and the secret of her sex was discovered. The affair has created an extraordinary sensation in the colonies. ——_+e+_____ Oldest Merchant Ships Affoat. From Lloyd's Register of Shipping. Vessels of the last century are almost extinct, a list of some 20,000 vessels of 100 tons and upward showing only three which can rightly claim 100 years of ex- istence, a few others of about the same age having been more or less completely rebuilt. The vessel having the earliest record— the “Svanem,” built in 1777—belongs to this latter class, having in 1865, after nearly a century of usefuiness, been thoroughly over- hauled, and practically, if not entirely, re- built. She is a small wooden brigantine of Danish origin, and appears to be employed entirely in inland waters. Next in order comes the “Cognac Pack- et,” a wooden scow of 169 tons register, whi though dating from 1792 only, really heads the list of centenarians, as she is in her original condition—ordinary re- pairs, of course, excepted—and bears the further distinction of being the oldest ship now classed at Lloyd's, her class of AE 1 having at the end of 1890 been extended for a further term of four years, after special survey at Harwich. A small wooden brig, named the “Eliza,” runs her very close, having been built at Whitehaven the same year, but her condition does not ap- pear to justify a class at Lloyd's. She registers 100 tons net, and is at present owned at Belfas' @ wooden brigantine of 108 tons, comes next with ninety-nine years to her credit, having been built in 1794 at Yarmouth, to which port she still belongs; while in 1798 appeared the “Ceres” of Sweden, a wooden brig of over 200 tons register. She, however, was partially re- built in 1848, and can hardly therefore lay cl to more than fifty years of existence. co — The Thanksgiving Day Game. The New Haven Register prints a long editorial on the Thanksgiving day game between Yale and Princeton, in which it fays these colleges are not natural antag- onists, and that there is no natural affinicy between them, though Yale is by no means lacking in respect for its New Jersey co temporary. The New York game, it says, has nothing of the university atmosphere, and is practically a colossal exhibition game run on business principles. There is good reason for giving it up, and substituting a@ game at Cambridge, a return game at : at a very low figure if disposed of at once. Ap G oree Lk; Sh ply to THOMAS J. FISHER & CO., ARTHUR W. From the San Francisco Examiner. It appears that a number of women have taken to the road as tramps, and are trav- eling toward California. They are said to be honest women, who are in search of em- Ployment. There are three of them who are said to be headed for Sacramento, having traveled together from Portland. They were without means, and starvation stared them in the face if they remained in the Oregon metropolis during the winter. It was a ccording}y th: to the top of the first freight came to, and, seating themsel edge of a box car, they allowed to dangle along the side and waited for locomotive to roll away. It is said eman who was running over the astonish- tourists the train was so paralyzed with ment when he saw the petticoated that he almost fell overboard. “Where are you going, my pretty maids?” he politely asked, and gallantly lifted his it. hat. The girls told him plainly that they were going to California; that they had to pay their fare, and for many and many a day. —_—__+- e+ _____ BLADES OF ANCIENT SWORDS. Keen-Edged Implements of the Four- teenth Centeary. From the London Saturday Review. A blade composed of 4,194,304 layers of steel, and polished so that European pol- ishing pastes will only serve to scratch it, is surely worth looking at. To the expert the quality of the blade is apparent from the markings, but the would-be purchaser may, if he choose, test the keen edge prac- tically. Masa-mune, the gentle smith of the four- teenth century, could let fall a hair or the hard-skinned adzuki bean across the edge, and either would be split in two; or, Regin, he would stand the weapon upright in a little stream of water, and let the cur- i j i i which, as it touched the edge, would in halves. No such gentle tests of the fierce Mura-masa, who swords to the cry of “Tenka tairan to men), and quenched each on warm blood of a fresh human vi so inspired the bright steel with an thirst, which caused it to cleave bronze and bronze like a melon, of a human life; and if left too scabbard to yt ieee ey desire to kill, and if drawn only for to gash the fingers of him who held it, he ever so careful. So terrible was slaughter effected by these semi-human blades that their use was prohibited by one of the Tokugawa Shoguns, and there- after they were consigned to grim repose if sullen discontent in the sword rack. Minor i ti ® 5 pit itlstieis and display an edge as unruffied after cleaving the stack, or to cut through a haif- inch copper bar. But if the customer were still unsatisfied, he might bribe the town executioner and test the sword on the body of a criminal; and, if he doubted his own skill, cause his weapon to be used in the execution itself, when if the blade were @ good one it would cut through the neck of the victim, and perbaps his beard or bended knee to boot.
