Workhouse, David Oliver is the name of an elderly coiored man who wanted a turkey for his Thanisgiving dinner, but he was more con- siderate than the man who stole the ham from the pot on the stove. He did not wait to take a fowi out of a stove in some person's kitchen, and deprive them of their dinner, but he went to the store of Mr. Fisher, where some large, fat fowls hung in front of the door, Taking down the finest one on the hooks, David started in the direction of his home, thinking he would fare as well as those who had obtained their fowls in the regular wey. But the proprietor of the store wit- nessed the transaction, and he had David on a run in a few seconds. The turkey had been put in a bag, but in his flight David dropped both the bag and its contents. After enjoying supper in the police sta- tion, David spent a peaceful night on his iron cot, and was given lice Court this morning. ‘There he appeare before Judge Miller, and said “guilt; adding, “I took de turkey.” “What were you going to do with it?” the Judge asked. “Eat it, of course,” was the old man’s response. ‘Why didn’t you buy it?” Didn't had de change.” “tow long have you lived in George- town?” “Fifty-one years.” “Have you ever been arrested before?” ‘or this kind of conduct?” 0, indeed; I never stole a turkey be- fo’ since I'se been born.” ‘Where were you going to cook it?” nh my stove, whar I'se cooked em be- ou never intended to cook the tur- key,” said Judge Miller. “You wanted to get rid of it for a whole lot of whisky and a litle bit of meat.” The judge advised him that he had better pay for his turkeys in the. future, and gave him sixty days, —_—___. THE HOUSE OPENED. Washingtoa Athletic Club Have a Pleasant House Warming. Last evening the Washington Athletic Club formally opened its handsome club house at South Capitol and streets, and about 300 friends of the club enjoyed the reception and dance ‘which followed. Fleming was pzevented by sick- ness from delivering the dedication address. Among those present were members of the various athletic clubs of the city. Died at the Hospital. A man died yesterday afternoon at the Emergency Hospital, who fell in what was thought to be an attack of apoplexy at Will- ard’s on Tuesday. He was a guest of the hotel, having registered “James E. Gerow, city.” He had given no clue as to his friends, and did not regain consciousness after the attack. An examination matie showed that the apoplexy was preceded by epilepsy. a Robbed His Benefactor. Antonia Briglia is the name of a young Italian who is spending his Thanksgiving in a Philadelphia police station. His home is in that city, but considerable part of his life has been spent in the reform school there. Recently he came to this city, where he met an old friend of his mother, a tailor named Michael Masina. The latter expressed a willingness to send the young man home, as he was short of funds, but Briglia did not desire to return home and so his mother’s friend gave him the privi- lege of sleeping with him. One night the young Philadelphian departed and with him went $25 belonging to the man who had befriended him. Detective Carter went to Philadeiphia yesterday and caused the arrest of Antonia, who will be brought here tomorrow for trial. —— At Atlanta, Ga., the supreme court has affirmed the appointment by Judge Roney of Mr. Averill, as receiver of the Port Royal and Augusta Railroad Company.
