The Star reporter joined him in his walk, and told him briefly that the people of the District were deeply in- terested in the record-breaking Columbia, inasmuch as it had been named in honor of the seat of the national government, and that they would like an opportunity of see- ing it, especially as they were desirous of acknowledging the it in a more substantial way. Secretary Herbert said he pleased with the interest of the District in the vessel, and that the department would certainly give our people a chance to see the vessel at the earliest opportunity. There were circumstances, he explained, that prevented action to this end at this time.
