‘12 - THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. ©. TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 21, 1893—TWELVE PAGES. TENLEYTOWN’S NEEDS. A Lively Meeting of Citizens Held Last Night. Improvements of Variou: Characters Discussed and Their Urgent Neces- slty Stated—Officers Elected. ‘The usual lively interest was taken by the citizens of Tenleytown last night in every question discussed by the association. There were only good talkers present and only the most vital subjects were brought up. Owing to death in the family, Chairman McCobb’s Place was filled by Mr. W. Britt. “The need that stands out paramount in Tenleytown,” Dr. E. W. Slaymaker said, as he arose, “is that pertaining to sewerage. ‘The health of the place must be maintained at the cost of every other improvement if necessary. Already the surface drains are overflowing with cast-off water. The more thickly settled our town becomes the more urgent becomes the call for sewers. By June next, at the latest, I have bee reliably informed, the Fort Reno water works will be in operation. Then sewers will be ab- solutely indispensable. We must, gentlemen, go to work at once. Delays will be danger- ous. Without health there can be no pro- gress. The proposed Foundry branch sew- er terminates right at the southern end of ‘Tenleytown proper, near where the Lough- borough and Tenleytown roads meet. To lay connecting pipes through Tenleytown would cause but the expenditure of a com- paratively small sum and work inestimable benefi There are many pools of water in the vicinity of Fort Reno, the doctor said, at all seasons of the year. Their business seems but to contaminate the surrounding air an furnish a pleasant place for croakers. “I| have heard frogs croak on the banks of | these ponds as late in the year as December.” Under the present system it meant but a short time before every well in the place would become contaminated with the waste water that sinks into the ground. More Light Needed. Mr. Clement H. Brooke spoke earnestly or the light question. “The place had grown ahead of oi] lamps.” he said, “and wanted either gas or electricity.” The latter could be obtained cheaper, too, from the railroad company whose cars passed through the neglected section. The thoroughfares of the town are at present without lights of any sort. With lights, the place would be better protected, for light and ropbers are deadly enemies. At present the town is a haven for depredators after dark. “Tenleytown's call should be answered readily.” Mr. Brooke said in conclusion, “as | she had never asked for anything before. ‘The proper way to obtain the improve- ments needed, Mr. Thomas W. Buckey said, was to ask for them in person. Peti- tions are now out of date. and no longer paid attention to. A concerted effort of the people, too, is now always required in or- der to get consideration from the Commis- stoners. Those interested in Petworth and other | similar subdivisions, get almost everything | they want because they back their requests up with tueir persons. Because Tenley- town has never pressed herself forward in| the past is the reason for her condition to- day. Are Entitled to Improvements. Dr. J. W. Chappell, always one of the foremost to look out for Tenleytown, said, | “AS we pay taxes, we are entitled to im- provements. The assessed value of George-| town property, I understand, is seven million dollars, while that of the county is| $24,000,000. Yet, do we get proportionate | improvements? No!" He moved that a com- mittee be appointed to investigate the mat- ter, and find the exact proportion of taxes paid by the two places. Tenleytown has always shared disproportionately, he said, in the improvements granted the District. | It was time the people were awakening to} their rights. In Georgetown there were! over half a dozen eight-room school buiid- | ings, and but assessed property of $7,000,- oo. In the Tenleytown district there was | Property valued at $21,000,000, and but one} old-fashioned four-room school house. Rev. Mr. Falls spoke on the subject | of street improvements. He said he had} understood from a recent newspaper ac-| count that $4,500,000 had been asked for one square in the northwest. If this were} true, certainly Tenleytown would be given | what she asked for. “We can live in hopes, anyhow eluded, “even if we die in despai Taxes collected should be spent again, and he would do everything in his power to! call the attention of the authorities to the | i | he con- slight which Tenleytown was always re-/| ceiving. On a motion of Dr. Chappell, Messrs. F. J. Wissner, R. F. Lowe and J.| Barton Miller of Georgetown, were made | the first honorary members of the new as- Sociations. Permanent Oflicers., At the election for permanent officers, | Mr. Ernest McCobb was chosen president, Dr. J. W. Chappell, vice president; Mr. | James O. Hoppe, secretary; Mr. Charlies! Eines, assistant secretary, and Mr. W. Britt, treasurer. Some of the most prominent ones present were: Messrs. Willet, Cameron, Britt, Hurley, Heider, Buckey Paxton, | Brooke, Hines, Stewart, Dr. Falls, Dr.| Slaymaker, Dr. Chappell, Phelps, les, Seaton pt ag ay tia i OF THE COLUMBIA. Hoppe, | RETU jusiastic Welcome Given Her All Along the Delaware. The United States cruiser Columbia re- turned triumphant!y to her dock at Cramp’s shipyard, Philadelphia, yesterday afternoon. The broom which was hoisted to her mast-| head when she crossed the finish line off | Cape Ann on Saturday, after having beaten | the world’s record for speed, still remains a | prominent feature of the ship's decorations. | In addition, there is emblazoned on each side of two of the cruiser’s huge smoke- Stacks the figures “22.81,” painted white | and large enough to be read by those a great distance away. The ship's journey up the river was in the nature of a tri-/ umphant procession. From the time she passed into the Dela-| ware river in the morning until the ship- yard was reached every passenger craft sa-| luted the queen of the seas with whistle or | bell, and no matter how apparently insig- | nificant the greeting, Capt. Sargent never failed to respond with a blast from the Co-| lumbia’s hoarse whistie. The ear-splitting siren was kept in reserve until the lower | Mmits of Philadelphia were reached. | From this on during the run of eight miles to Cramp’s yard the din was almost deafening. Thousands of people stood on the wharves and housetops alons the river front and shouted joyous congratulations to the noble cruiser that had beaten the best time made by the best vessels of the world’s great navies. As soon as the Columbia arrived at her dock the Cramps, in honor of the occasion, gave their 3.500 employes a holiday for the balance of the day. The run from Boston was uneventful. With four of the ship's eight boilers under | forced draught, two of the screws pushed her at the rate of 18 1-2 knots an hour for eight hours. The center screw was discon- nected during this time. The average coal consumption in this test wes ten tons an hour. After this the ship speeded home- ward under natural draught. averaging from 18 to 20 knots an hour. and behaving beautifully, even when a gale struck her off the coast at 4 o'clock yesterday morning. ——_—_-+e- _- Anglo-Phobia at Yontreal. | ‘Three young French Canadians, first year | Students at the Law University, full of pa-| triotic zeal for France, attempted at mid- Might. Alexandria city formerly owned a large amount of real estate, and the real estate ecmmittee of the city council was one of the most important of the public commit- tees. The city council has, however, of late years disposed of its property at the foot of Duke street, which came to it from the old board of trustees, and is under contract to sell the American coal wharf property, near the northeastern edge of the city. The city still possesses, however, the market square and it has a claim upon the engine houses and also a half square, donated orig- irally for a market, on Cameron street, running from Fayette to Payne streets. On this latter property® it pays a rent charge of $100 per annum. It has also an interest, in common with the county of Al- exandria, in the Columbus street court house and lot and in the jail and a half square of ground thereto belonging. But little of the city real estate except the mar- ket square is profitable, and the committee on public property, formerly a very busy committee, is now aimost a sinecure. The Northwestern Improvement Company heid its annual meeting here yesterday and elected the following officers: C. H. Bur- gess, president; George E. Carson, vice president; L. W. Spear, secretary; Clarence Baker, treasurer; C. H. Underwood, W. A. H. Church, George T. Keen, F. A. Stier and D. G. Purman, directors. The association does business in Washington. After the business meeting a bounti- | ful supper was served in the hall to the members of the lodge and their invited guests, including several members of the order from Washington, and Town Com- missioners Smith, Wells and Long. Nachman of Lafayette Lodge of Washin, ton entertained the audience with comic songs and recitations. Past Grand Archi- tect Geo W. Berry of the District of Co- lumbia delivered an address in which he gave a brief history of the order and men- tioned the benefits that had resulted from its work. He was foliowed by Mr. Richard F. Brown and Dr. Chas. A. Wells of Golden Rule Lodge, who spoke of the order in glow ing terms. This lodge is in a flourishing | condition and is rapidly increasing in mem- bership. ‘The board of town commissioners met last night at the residence of Dr. Chas. A. Wells. Considerable local business was transacted, and it was decided to receive bids for grading and graveling Luttrell and Littlefield avenues. A musical and literary entertainment was given last night by Prof. Hoskins and his assistants at Magruder’s Hall. Houses are closed? more carefully thar usual, chairs are piled against the doers, bigger charges are poured into the guns, alarm clocks are loaded to shoot at intervals during the night, and the hitherto peaceful slumbers of the town are disturbed. Preparations for an enthusiastic meeting Anscostia Citizens’ Association are on foot.
