12 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. MONDAY. NOVEMBER 20, 1893—TWELVE PAGES. THE COLOR LINE. It Was the Subject of Dr. Seaton’s Sermon Yesterday. He Says the Colored Race Has Been Oppressed and Downtrodden— He Urges Frug: ity. Rev. Dr. D. P. Seaton, pastor of Eben- ezer A. M. E. Church, Georgetown, preach- ed a sensational sermon last night on the »ppression of the negro race. He drew his ‘ext from Solomon, chapter 1:6, “Look not spon me because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me. My mother's children were angry with me and made me the keeper of their vineyards, and mine own have I not kept.” Dr. Seaton said that he would have his congregation understand in the beginning that it was far from his pur- pose to make a tirade upon any who might | be at fault, nor to awaken any feelings of indignation against those whose sympathies Were not with the colored people. Such a step would be beneath the dignity of the ministry and inconsistent with Christian teachings. He hoped that by taking a sur-| vey of the status of the race he might aid in stimulating it to such action as would lift it into prominence and insure progress. and prosperity. Like the watchmen in Seripture, he saw the sword coming and felt it his duty to sound a warning. It was not a sword entirely reeking with blood, but one which sundered the fraternity of man, which upheld the strong and oppressed the weak. Frauds against the colored race were | popular in the church and in the state. The officers of the law, the statesmen, the su- preme judges and the ministers of the Gos- | pel, with few exceptions, turned away ie their appeals for justice and fair play. They | were hated without cause. The negro of America has been looked upon only as wor-/ thy to labor for the enrichment of others. He is shut out from all employments where- im may be found opportunities for ad- vancement and promotion. The white race has barred his progress with every obstacle | which outrage, prejudice and bigotry could ; devise. He is damned as a siothful and _ non-progfessive being, but ever since the emancipation proclamation he has Lomang| wading through seas of blood, and has been | ruthlessly hunted by bloodhounds and by | men as bloodthirsty as the dogs. He has been driven from the plantation, the school, the church, and from his home. He has been sentenced to prison for long terms for slight offenses, driven from the polls, re- | fused the right to vote, shot down by day | and lynched by night. He has been the) helpless victim of brutes. Man is man, be_ he as white as a lily or as black as a raven. | No race is superior to any other race by re: son of color. The negro is the victim of sentiment conceived in prejudice and born in i will It is constantiy advertised against him. White children are trained in this as soon as they can toddle, and they drink it in with a greed and relish which knows no bounds. The beating of a negro | gives a white man pleasure. | We are told that if the blacks are per- mitted to associate with the whites they will want to marry the fairest daughters of the white families. We have a variety of complexions in our own race, from the biackest to the whitest. But the shoe is on the other foot. A colored lady cannot be seen on the street alone, after nisht- fall, but what she is followed and insulted by men of the ruling race; yet they say we are not worthy of their social consi eration. What if a black man does ov step the line and wed with a white girl? | He is only foilowing the example set b the dominant class for hundreds of year: and I am sure it is no more than right for the man who visits my house to allow me to visit his. Why should a man be judged t or misjudged by the color of his skin? G McKinney of Virginia has said in a for- mal message to the legislature that we should be segregated in separate cars, just as we are in schools, churches, restaurants and hotels. Mixed schools have been tried and found successful. In colleges colored students have always held their own. This has been demonstrated at Yale, Harvard and other leading educational institutions. Mr. McKinney was ignorant of these facts. If our complexion were not fast colors there might be some reason in the objec- tion to us. A religion which favors one | class because of color is not the religion | hich Jesus Christ came to establish. In | ity Road Chapel, London, I helped ad- | minister the Lord's supper by the side of a white minister from Charleston, 5. C., and gave communion to the ladies who were with him. Think you this would have been tolerated down south? The black peo- ple of this land laid the foundation of m tional prosperity. We kept their vineyards for them. Dr. Seaton dwelt at much length on the Annie Shipley case, a beautiful and | accomplished church worker, who after Years of service in the church was ostra- cised because it was alleged that she was | tainted with negro blood. He closed by advising his peopie to be sparing with their funds, not to give themselves up to vain and fancied pleasure, but to be frugal, prov- ident and to look ahead for the glory of | posterity. ee THE INITIAL LECTURE. Mr. Carroll Beckwith Talks to the Art | Students’ League. ‘The members of the Art Students’ League and others who are interested in matters of | art Hstened to an interesting address by Mr. Carroll Beckwith at Builders’ Ex- change Hall on Saturday evening. This was the first of the winter series of lectures ar- ranged for by the league, and attracted a large and naturally appreciative audience. Mr. Beckwith took for his subject ‘Modern | Painters.” THE ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE. Stirring Addresses in Garfield Me- morial Church Yesterday Afternoon. Garfield Memorial Church, on Vermont avenue, was filled to the doors yesterday af- | ternoon when the meeing held under the | auspices of the Anti-Saloon League was | Opened. There were three stirring addresses and some good music, and after an hour and a half the folks who attended went away determined to work hard in a campaign against the granting of liquor licenses. Mr. A. N. Canfield, chairman of the committee on legislation of the Good Templars of the | words, explaining why the league held these meetings in the churches of the city. Sim- ilar meetings will be held throughout the winter, he said, and it was hoped thus to enlist the sympathies and active support of the church people of the District. 4. O. Eldridge of the Doug jal Chureh told done by each indi dual, and told a story of how certain local option legislation was ob- | tained in Maryland after months of fighting, | mainly through the words of a newsboy at Annapolis. He expressed his firm belief in the final victory of temperance. ‘The work of the league, he asserted, was not merely defensive, but aggressive, and it was a good principle that whatéver the enemy didn’t wish to be done was the safe thing to do. He alluded to the liquor element as “an or- ganized moneyed minority. Then Prof. Percy Foster sang “The Hol: City,” and he was followed by Rev. Dr. F. D. Power, the pastor of the Garfield Church, who told a story to get his hearers in a good humor and then classified the world, so far as the league is concerned, into three sections: Those that love liquor, those that supply them with it, and those that make it possible for the saloons to exist. All three of these classes, he said, might be reached through persistent effort. Dr. L. B. Wilson of Wesley Chapel, in a clear, logical address, showed that the liquor question was as much of a national issue as the tariff or the silver problem. For the United States to be perfectly consistent as a nation, he said, it should blow up the navy, dismiss the army, tear down the churches, close the colleges and recall from the ports the officers stationed there to keep out the pauper immigrants from other coun- tries. Yet, he added, the question here was a local one, for it can all be handled by the people themseives without reference to the law makers on the hill. He asserted that every saloon in the District can be closed if the people of the churches see to it that the residents in squares where there are saloons are properly informed of the wrong they are annually doing in signing the petitions of the liquor sellers. A generous collection was taken up for the support of the work of the league, and Prof. Foster sang another solo, after which the meeting was dismissed. > — George H. Thomas Post. Ther was a pleasant time in the north- east.when the inspection of George H. Thomas Post, No. 15, G. A. R., was made by Department Commander S. E. Faunce and his staff. Past Commander George E. Davis was the inspector, and found this post in excellent condition. Department Commander Faunce spoke to the comrades upon the duties and objects of the Grand Army, saying that while the department had suffered a slight loss in membership during the past year, Post 15 had made a gain of five per cent. The order was suf- fering an increased death rate, he said, and the calls for charity were continually increasing. There had been expended by the posts In this department during the past vear for charity alone the sum of $15,000, Senor Vice Commander Nathan Bickford, Assistant QuartermasterGeneral Ferree and Assistant Adjutant General G. M. Husied, Department Chavlain Stevens also mad* pleasant speeches. After the post was closed the department commander and staff were entertained at a luncheon by individ- ual members of the post. — Woman's Press Association. At the regular meeting of the Woman's National Press Association Mrs. F. H. Heward offered resolutions of sympathy on the death of Lucy Stone, in which a glowing tribute was paid to character of the decease}. The resolutions were adopted and a copy forwarded to the Boston Press Association, of which Lucy Stone was a member. ____ THIS AFTERNOON. RATCLIFFE, DARK & CO., AUCTIONEERS. So far as the artistic ability displayed in the construction of the buildings was con- erned, excellent as that was, it was to be traced largely to a masterly handling of the classic models, with the exception, per-, haps, of the transportation and fisheries buildings. But the work of the painters, as displayed in the wall exhibits and the per- manent interior decorations, was distinc- uvely American in tone, color, and concep- tion, and argued well for the growth of an | American school of art. Toward the close of his address, which | was historical even more than critical, Mr. Beckwith paid a pleasant tribute to the geod work being done by the league in this city. It is through the medium of such in- stitutions, he said, that the latent art talent of the country would be developed, and _ when the students, by advanced study abroad. had acquired that excellence of | technique which as yet could be attained | enly there, they would return to this coun- try, where their earliest impressions of art | had been received, to paint American life in American tone and color, and finally bring about that long looked for result, the establishment of a real American school | of art. ————— Slammed the Door, See!
