‘12 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1893—TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. gers ALEXANDRIA. Every year makes it more evident that the accident which cut off from the municipal- ity of Alexandria a portion of the land iy- ing between the city and Hunting creek should be remedied. When the city was in- corporated in 1779 Hunting creek was its south boundary, but with the cession to the United States in 1791, the District line, which runs in a northwest direction from the light house to very near the intezsection of Wolfe and West streets, was laid out, ex- cluding from the town parts of Jefferson, Green and Church streets and the whole of South and Penny Hilb streets, with the Southern ends of every street in the city except Lee street. This land was laid out as part of the city of Alexandria and would be benefited by being restored to its original municipal reiations. It is, as a rule, well adapted for building, and except at its east- ern end, where there is a small marshy Portion, it is a cultivated plain, having a {ine | view of the Potomac and of Hunting creek, easily graded into streets and admirably adapted to buildings of all kinds. It cannot be long before the interests of all concerned Will extend Aiexandria to the creek shore. The chain gang has been recruited under @ new conscript law, which enlists tramps without their consent and sets them to work cleaning the streets. The force is now larger than ever before, and the enlistment effice is still open, under charge of Lieut. Smith and the police force. Applicants have to undergo no sort of civil service ex- amination, but are initiated at once upon) being found about Alexandria and its neigh-| borhood without seeking work or showing a willingness to do the part of good citizens. The National Capitol Brewing Company met here today and elected its directors as follows: E. F. Abner, J. D. Bartlett, Albert Carry, Frank Madigan, Robert Portner, C. A. Strangman and J. L. Vodt. The mission at Grace Church of Rev. Joseph Reynolds, jr., of New York will be- gin next Tuesday evening. Ample pzepara- tions have been made by the church guild for the interesting occasion. The corporation court still continues its session, and today Judge Norton granted to Mr. L. Ruben administration upon the es- «ate of Mr. Moritz Ruben, his father. M:. M. S. Parker is lying very low at his home on King street near Washington street. Mr. M. B. Harlow and James B. Clements have induced Senator Hunton to prepare a paper for presentation to Secretary Lamont setting out convincing reasons for the building of the bridge from Arlington to Washington. ‘The Columbia engine house is being re- painted on the interior. The Hydraulion house has recently been repainted. Commissioner A. W. Armstrong of this city will hear evidence, etc., in the case of the Faizfax school board against Fegan’s hetrs, that case having been referred to him by the Fairfax court. epee TAKOMA PARK. Miss Matie Cowl of Washington is iting Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Cowl of Holly avenue. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Smith of Denver, Col., are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Homer J. Guerry. Mr. Judd of Holly avenue has returned with his family from a visit to his old home in Ohio, where he went before the election. ‘The decision of Mrs. Agnes Nourse and Miss Mary Waters (principal and assist- ant, respectively, of the public school here), to reside in Washington this winter and} make daily trips, is a source of regret to their many friends resident in Takoma. Owing to necessary improvements and re- | pairs in progress in their new home, Rev. and Mrs. Allen Griffith, with their famil have been compelled to defer their house- keeping arrangements, which they antici- pate resuming early in the coming week. Sirs. Griffith having entirely recovered from | her recent illness. A special meeting of the town council was held last evening for the purpose of con- sidering matters of importance to the com- munity. A well attended meeting of Takoma Lodge, No. 24. 1. G. O. F., was held in Odd Fellows’ Hail !ast evening, when it was decided to close early, us many were de- strous of attending the meeting of the coun- ell. Much interested is being manifested in the visitation of the Grand Lodge, planned for the 23d instant. ‘The change from Monday to Friday even- ing at 7-40 for rehearsal of Takoma Chorus seems to meet with general approbation, the number at the last meeting veing greatly in excess of any previous meeting. Mr. Theo. Friebus, the director, announced at the last meeting that it was his desire that the chorus should prepare themselves to give a concert at an early day. Miss Herrowdeen of Washington will give an interesting parlor talk at the residence of Mrs. G. A. Ford this evening. Col. Prentiss Ingrahcm, with his family, residents of Takoma some two or more years, are located in Baltimore for the win- ter, from which city, Miss Ivy Ingraham anticipated some pleasant visits to Wash- imgton and Takoma friend: How low must the mercury be before the railway company give us the benefit of the stoves placed in some of their cars? Now that the terminal improvements are a. most completed, it is important for the health, as well as comfort of passengers, that the station at the Takoma and Silver Spring junction should be roofed in such a manner that patrons compelled to wait therein would be protected from the ele- ments, which has not been the case dur- ing the rain and wind of the past few days. The removal to greater distance from track was not done too soon, and this action is receiving commendation on all sides. Miss Amanda McMurray has returned to her home from a visit to friends in Ta- koma. ——___ HYATTSVILLE. An event of interest to Brookland people Was the chrysanthemum tea given by Miss j Alta West of 9th street southwest, Wash- ington, to the members of her infant class of the Marvin M. E. Sunday school. The parlors and dining room of Miss West's home were prettily decorated with the reigning flower, a host of friends were pres- ent and a neat little sum was realized for the class missionary fund. The meeting of the Dorcas Society of the St. Clement's P. E. Mission, which was to have been held at the residence of Mrs. T. G. The matter will be reported to the Chinese minister at Washington and to Secretary of State Gresham.
