“12 G STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1893—TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. While the proposal to open additional Streets on the north side of the town Is pending there is a proposal to open the streets on the south end of the town, and/ @ bill to open Pitt street to the south line! of the town is now pending before a con- ference committee of the city boards. The streets in the beginning were intended to| Tun south to Hunting creek; but, in fact, Lee street is the only one which continues | to the creek. Patrick street reaches the creek by a county road, which makes a! deflection just beyond the corporation line, and needs of the Catholic graveyaml have! carried Washington street as far as South street, and Columbus street is open to Jef- ferson street. With these exceptions all the streets running south end at a fence on the south side of Franklin street. It is said that the deeds of the land recognize the existence of Pitt street south of Frank- | lin, but there is not even a tradition of the time when it was open. Its opening would, | however, be of a great convenience for ve-| hicles to approach the electric road bridze, which also provides for the crossing of car- riages. The new street will reach the east end of the Catholic graveyard and will af-| ford an open way to the creek, which will | be useful for skaters and bathers and pedes- | trians. The Washington Knights of Pythias are visiting Rathbone Division fair in conside able numbers. Last night many represent- atives of Columbia Division of Washington were present. Yesterday afternoon Lieut. Smith cf the Police force made a raid on a tramp sett ment near Schuler’s barn and locke! thirteen tramps for the night. The was safe from their depredations and morning they were starting on their way. A meeting is to be held tonight by Ale’ andria Council of the National Union with @ view to increasing its membership. The state taxes are now being paid in at the city treasurer's office. The wedding of Mr. Harry Moore and Mi: Rhoda Ward took place at G ureb on Tuesday night. The newly married couple were warmly congratulated by ir friends and had a reception at the resi ce of Mrs. Burton on South Lee street. The remains of Mr. James G. Grimes, an old citizen of Alexandria, will be bronzht here from Washington tomorrow for burial. Mr. Grimes was formeriy a dealer in the} Alexandria market, holding a prominent | place. | up tow — > — FREDERICK CITY. John Oland, living on the Harper's Ferry | turnpike, near this city, was the victim of ® highway robbery the other night. He was driving along the road, when a man sud- denly sprang from the bushes along the pike and seized his horse, while another | held a pistol to his head and a third went; through his pockets, taking all the money he had, amounting to about five dollars. He did not identify any of the men any fur- ther than to tell that they were all three | negroes. George W. Phoebus and Calvin Brubaker of this city and Edward Crone of near Middletown, this county, went hunting to- gether on Tuesday. While in the woods between Middletown and Myerville they lost each other, and as a result Crone was accidentally shot in the right arm by Phoe- bus, and severely wounded, several of the shot also striking him on the right cheek. He was taken to Middletown to have his wounds dressed. The republicans at Middletown and Em- mitsburg, this county, have held meetings to celebrate their recent victory in this county, but the republicans of Frederick City have decided not to hold a jollification. The matter of the appointment of the depu- ties of Sheriff-elect Daniel P. Zimmerman is attracting much attention. He had nam- ed his son-in-law, James W. Crum of Woodsboro’, as riding deputy last week, but the managers of the party objected on the ground that the party ought to be allowed to name the appointees. In view of this, the appointment has been held up. In the! Face for the position are Horace Staley, | Thomas S. Albaugh, Harvey R. Lease and The Evangelical Lutheran parsonage in this city is being enlarged and improved in @ substantial way. From a two-and-a-halt- story building it is being raised to one of three and a half stories, and many mod- ern improvements will be added. W. Irving Parsons has sold for the Fred- erick County National Bank the handsome store property on East Patrick street, this city, occupied by Charles Diffendal & Co. The purchasers were the Messrs. Rosenour Brothers, of Frederick, and the price paid was $8,750. Mr. John Cutshall of Woodsboro’, this county, has been appointed secretary of the Mutual Insurance Company of Frederick county, to succeed the late George Wm. “wamer. ——__ ROCKVILLE. In the circuit court yesterday the case of John Burriss, colored, charged with assault- ing an officer, was concluded with a verdict ef guilty as indicted. To the two other ‘cases against him, one for keeping a gam- ing table and the other for carrying con- cealed weapons, a plea of guilty was enter- ed, and Burriss was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment in the house of cor- rection. During the progress of the triai all the gambling devices of the prisoner, in- cluding a sweat cloth, dice and boxes, a re- volver and other articles, were exhibited in court, and attracted much attention. At the time Burriss was arrested, in September last, he was engaged in operating a game of “sweat” at a colored camp meeting, about @ mile from this place, and when Deputy Shea! W. E. Connell attempted to appre- hend him drew a revolver and attempted to shoot the officer, but was prevented from committing the act by a sudden blow from @ bystander. Since that time he has been confined in jail here, not having beea able to procure bail. In the orphans’ court yesterday letters of administration on the personal estate of Paruck Offutt, deceased, were granted to Thiemann S. Offutt, bond, %. Kraft of Poolesville, who has | shown decided musical talent, has entered | the Boston Conservatory of Music to take | @ special course. Mrs. C. H. Nourse and Mrs. James Beall | of Darnestown have returned from a visit | to friends in Washington. ‘A pretty marriage was celebrated at Haw- lings River P. E. Church on the Sth instant, the happy couple being Mr. Frank Griffith, son of Judge Charles H. Griffith, and Verda, daughter of Mr. Will Griffith, both of | this county. The bride was attired in a handsome fawn-colored traveling suit and | carried a bunch of La France roses, the groom appearing in the usual full-dress black. The impressive marriage service of the church was rendered by Rev. W. H. Laird. Messrs. Green, Griffith, Robert Dor- sey, Cranmer Griffith and Israel Warfield | acted as ushers, and the wedding march) was rendered in fine style by Prof. Glen, Poole of Poolesville. After the conclusion of the ceremony Mr. and Mr. Griffith r ceived the congratulations of their numer- ous friends present. and afterward took a train at Gaithersburg for an extended wes ern trip. Upon their return they will lo- cate in Howard county. The sudden death of Mr. John W.
