The removal cf the switch at the Takoma terminus of the electric road, and placing of a double track, thereby preventing the delay in attaching and pulling to end of route the trailer left on the track by pre- ceding car, will soon be a thing accom- Plished, and the temporary annoyance of chenging cars at Silver Spring junction will more than compensate for the comfort of riding to and from the terminus. The edn- nections with Soldiers’ Home and 14th street branch are proving their popularity by the increased travel, and when an arrangement is perfected, by which a car for the latter branch will meet the incoming cars, the latter travel will greatly increase. “Col. Whitman of Washington gave an interesting parlor talk on the subject of Christian science to a numerous and in- terested audience, at the residence of Mr. HH. P. R. Holt on Monday evening. Mrs. Chas. H. White of Baltimore has returned to her home after a few days’ visit to Washington and Takoma friends, to whom she gave a glowing description of a two weeks’ visit to the world’s fair. Mrs. Bryant, with her daughters, the Misses Bryant, have concluded to remain in their Takoma home, on Chestnut av.nue, for the winter. Miss Bessie B. Bryant has returned from a week's visit to Boston. The Williams’ cottage on Chestnut ave- nue, adjoining Judge Miller's home, is closed for season, Mrs. Williams having gone to New York, after the death of Miss lola Willams, from which city she anticipated a winter visit to Florida. Mrs. Allen Griffith has returned from a short visit with Mrs. and Miss Joynes in Baltimore. Mrs. George C. Videtto, who has been seriously {ll since her removal! to this place, is now making rapid progress toward re- covery. The opening services of the new Fpisco- pal chapel will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, the 2éth instant, when Bishop Paret will be present and administer the rite of confirmation with other ‘nteresting and appropriate services. Mrs. E. B. Elizabeth, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. 3. Shedd, has recovered from a very serious attack of croup, which prostraced her for a few days. The laying of the pipes by. the Washi ton Gas Company, through the streets here, has been confined so far to the District por- tion of the town. The pipes are on hand to be laid in the Maryland portion as soon as the consent of the authorities-shall be ob- tained. The superintendent of lamps has ndt yet located the latter. The snow which fell after midnight last night, while not sufficient to cover the Was enough to break the record ef the oldest inhabitant, who cannot re- member snow as early as November 15. Mrs. Bertha Burch, with her daughter, Gertrude, has returned from northern New York, where they have enjoyed the past sumfmer and autumn. ——__>__. LALREL. Rev. John Lanahan, D. D., who has been quite ill for some days, is slowly improving, though quite weak. Miss Lillie Compton has gone on a visit to New York and the east. Bishop Paret of the Episcopal Church, will administer the right of confirmation in St. Philip's Church, Laurel, on Sunday. Building is still going on here, notwith- standing the hard times and lateness of the season. Mr. J. A. Brown is erecting a store on Main street, and Mr. F. M. Baker is building a warehouse for carriages in the rear of his handsome new store on Main street. The foot ball craze has reached Laurel, the second game of the season having been played on Saturday last. The Laurel eleven had as their opponents the strong eleven from Marston's University, Baltimore. After @ struggle lasting one hour, neither side scering, the game was called a draw. The second month's report of the graded public school of the town, as filed with the dlerk of the school board, shows an en-oll- ment of 126 scholars and an average atten- dance of 107, divided as follows: Prof. H. F. Lowe, principal, 38; Miss Fanny Bugg, first assistant, 31; Miss Virgie Bugs, second as- sistant, 57. At the meeting of the Pioneer Lodge of Good Templars, held last night, Miss Lillie Porter was elected as second delegate to the Grand Lodge, and the election of the thicd delegate was postponed until next Tuesday right. Mr. J. R. Jacobs was elected lodge deputy for the ensuing year. The following delegates were elected to represent the lodge in the district lodge, which meets at next Monday, viz: Miss Corrie Cooksey, J. H. Garretson, W. T. Sprangle, W. E. Packer, Mrs. J. M. Mr. Hony has rented and moved in enn house of Mrs. Isaac Brown at West A public meeting in the interest of the electric road from Washington to Falls Church will be held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall Thursday night. M:s. F. W. Searl is visiting her sister, Mrs. D. F. McGowan, in Washington. The November term of the circuit court fommenced here on Monday morning, Judge John T. Vinson on the bench. After the selection of a grand jury the principal part of the day was consumed in calling the docket and the assignment of cases. In his charge to the grand jury Judge Vinson tcok occasion to call the attention of that body to violations of the local option law by the illegitimate sale of intoxicating liquors, which practice was doing much in- Jury to the best interests of the county and causing the demoralization of many of its citizens. He also expressed his regret that the court had not the power to send the violators of this law to the house of cor- rection, which punishment he thought was the only way to break up this illegal traffic. Upon receiving the charge the grand jury retired to their room and have since that time examined quite a large number of wit- nesses. On Tuesday Judge Lynch also made his appearance on the bench, since which time the following cases have been considered: Appeals—Richard Brown vs. State of Maryland, plea of not guilty con- fessed by the state; state vs. Wm. B. Selby, Warrant quashed; state vs. Henry Miles and Geo. Wright, appeal dismissed: state va. James P. Iter, warrant quashed; Wm. G. Hall and Lucy Hail, by W. G. Hall for next friend, vs. Carson Ward, judgment re- versed and attachment quashed; Charles M. Ward vs. Charles C. Mainhart, judgment for appellant for $22; Richard Caywood vs. John D. W. Moore, judgment affirmed with costs; August Clemens vs. state of Mary- land, warrant quashed; Annie Brown, warrant quashed; same vs. same, not guilty; state vs. Jno. Burriss, now on trial. Burriss, the defendant in this case, is charged with an assault on an officer. There are two other cases against him. one for keeping a gaming table and the other for carrying concealed weapons. He is a resi- dent of Washington and came here to a colored camp meeting last September, where the offenses are charged to have taken place. A deputy marshall from the United States @ourt in Baltimore came here today and served warrants on several persons charged with violation of the revenue laws by sell- ing Hquors without obtaining a revenue license. It is understood that the cases wiil come up for trial during this week. During the past two weeks an extensive revival of religion has been in progress at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Mortrose, this county under the ministration of Rev. J. L. Lodge, and a aumber of converts have been added to the church. On next Sunday week thirteen persons will receive the ordinance of baptism by immer- sion. The question of the terms of the five county commissioners for this county was yesterday settled by the governor at Annap- olis, who selected Messrs. John O. Clarke, Joseph T. White and Richard T. Ray for four years each, and Jas. T. Trundle and John H. Bagley, each for two years. The volunteer fire company at Gaithers- burg at a recent meeting adopted a uniform for the members and elected the following officers: President, Upton Darby; secretary, Henry J. In the United States Supreme Coust Mon- day the motion of D. A. Townsend, at- torney general of South Carolina, for leave to file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in behalf of C. B. Swan, a constable, now in custody of G. J. Cunningham, United States marshal fo> South Carolina, was granted, and Chief Justice Fuller an- nounced that the writ would be made re- turnable i: stanter. The papers in the case were thereupon filed, and the argument will probably be made next Monday. This case involves In a measure the South Carolina dispensary or liquor law. Swan seized an invoice of liquor shipped into the state by the South Carolina railroad, on the ground that it was contraband of the law.
