16 LEAVES “JOSIE MANSFIELD.” @paration of a Once Notorious Wo- man and Her Husband. Mr. Robert L. Reade and his wife, former- Jy notorious as “Josie Mansfield,” have agreed to separate. Their differences have been placed in the hands of New York law- ers for the purpose of arranging an equita- ble financial basis for their separation. Mr. Reade has promised to provide handsomely for his wife. He met Josie Mansfield in the summer of 1891. She was still a belle, al- though no longer young, and she had many admirers. She called herself Mrs. Lawlor. He was fascinated by her ard urged her to marry him immediatety. He gave a dinner to some friends in Sep- tember, 1891, and when the liqueurs were served made this announcement: “I am going to marry Josie Mansfield if she'll let me. I think she has been more sinned against than sinning. She is the @nly person who can save me from drinx- ing myself to death, as I'm now doing. You @ll know how I've lived.” He told other friends a few days after- ‘ward that he was going to England to visit his brother-in-law, Lord Falkland, at his gountry seat, Skutterskelfe, in Yorkshire. next news was the publication on Oc- tober 16 following that he had married Mrs. Lawlor in St. George's Church, Hanover square, London. His father, Robert Reade, was very wealthy, having been one of the first and Most extensive property owners in Minne- @polis. Robert Reade sold most of his Amer- ican possessions in 1876 and went to France with his wife and two daughters. He was a while bathing about nine years Robert L. Reade, who is short and thick set, practiced law in New York city for some years. He enjoyed a large ‘come and he devoted more of his time to merry company than to legal work. Mrs. Reade was probably the subject of more gossip twenty years ago than any wo- man who had ever lived in this hemisphere. That was long before she met the man from whom she has now separated. It was on her account that Edward S. Stokes killed James Fisk, jr., on the stairs of the Grand Central Hotel in New York. She was then Rnawn as Josie Mansfield. She was wonderfully charming at the time that she ensnared Col. Fisk. Her carriages, her diamonds and her dresses—all gifts of the great operator in Erie stock—were the talk of the city. She quarreled with Fisk and he became Jealous of the attention she received from Stokes. The shooting of Fisk followed soon afterward. Josie Mansfield sued Col Fisk’s widow for $200,000, claiming that the colonel had owed her this amount. She lost this suit and then went to live in Boston. She found the Hub a most uncomfortable residence, as crowds followed her and hooted at her in the streets. She fled to Paris. Her first husband was Frank Lawlor, an actor of some note. She was in San Fran- gisco at the time of her marriage to him. Her maiden name was Warren. She and Lawlor lived together until 1360. She met Fisk in the house of Mrs. Annie Woods in New York city in 1870, and re- quested an introduction. Lawlor died some years ago.
