Chief Justice Bingham in the Xquity Court, Division 3, today discharged the re- straining order in the case of the Pean- sylvania Anthracite Coal Company against R. J. Kennedy et al., to restrain the col- lection of accounts from the government for the appointment of a receiver, &c., on the ground that the court had no jurisdic- tion and an — was — —— The Wheel Held. An important question has been raised in the case of the young men who stole bicy- eles here earlier in the week and went to Baltimore, where they sold one of the wheels. The question now is how the au- thorities in this city are going to recover the wheel sold in Baltimore. The wheei was sold at public auction by a reputable business man for $5, and the money was turned over to the young man who left the wheel there to be sold. Detective Boardman went over to Ralti- more today, but was told that he could not have the wheel without advancing the price paid for it by the Baltimore man. He re- twened without the wheel. ———— Funeral of Mes. Chickering. The funeral services of the late Mrs. Chickering, wife of Prof. John W. Chicker- ing of the Columbia Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, took place yesterduy afternoon at 4 jock from the family res dence at Kendall Green. Mrs. Chickering had a large circle of friends and acquaint- ances throughout the city as well as at Kendail Green, wiere her husband has oc- eupied a chair for many years, and her death, which occurred Tuesday morning, ig greatly lamented. The funeral services were of a deeply impressive nature and were conducted by Re Dr. Newman of the First Congregational Church. Of the pallbearers four were from the staff of professors at Kendall Green. The ment was at Rock Creek cemetery. ——— Woman's National Indian Association. A number of Jadies interested in the Wo- man's National Indian Association met this | morning in the west parlor of the Congre- gational Church to arrange for the annual | meeting of the society to be held in Wash-| ington December 6 and 7. The duty of the day was made very attractive by a little talk from Miss Fletcher, who told them of the splendid showing of Indian schools and | imdustries at the world’s fair. Mrs. Dall and Mrs.Cunningham had also encouraging worgs to say. Among others present were Mrs. Gen. Landor, Mrs Peller, Miss Whit- | comb, Mrs. H. G. Wilkinson, Mrs. Rosa Wright Smith, Mrs. and Miss Craighead snd Mrs. Gen. Whittlesey. A Famous Butter Firm. A quarter century's successful experience In the butter business has given the relia- ble house of Jas. F. Oyster, corner 9th and Pennsylvania avenue, a ige and ud- Vantage over all ‘others. The Chcral Society Concert.—A Boston Symphony Orchestra concert usually satis- fies the musical desires of this community for one week and that is probably why there was not a greater attendance at the Choral Society’s entertainment at Metze- rott’s Hall last night. This society is at the head of musical organizations in the | District and its work last evening was in every way praiseworthy. It was the first time the society had been heard under its new leader, Prof. Kaspar, and its thorough obedience to the will of the conductor showed his excellent control over his force. In point of attack, delicacy of shading and vigor in the forte passages the society was in splendid form, and the selections given were such as to show a wide range of treatment. The society is to be congratu- lated on its improvement and Prof. Kaspar is also to be congratulated upon so quickly and effectively attaining the confidence and earnest support of such a large body of singers. The soloists were ail local musicians with one notable exception and that one may be dismissed with the simple statement that al- though he was evidently suffering from ner- yousness, neither his voice nor method are hardly up to the concert mark. Miss Maud Powell gave new evidence of her artistic merit as a violinist and in ail her numbers played with a vigor and brilliancy that completely captivated her audience and le ed positive enthusiasm. Mrs. Nellie Wilson Shir-Clift has a pleasing personality, a voice of exceptional flexibility and the florid aria that she sang demonstrated the careful cultivation that her natural organ had received, but it also exhibited decidedly | defective enunciation. Mr. John Porter Lawrence played a Chopin polonaise with a dash and brilliancy that proved his tho- rough comprehension of the spirit of the composition, and with a clearness and ac- curacy of tone that attested his finish as a pianist. He has not been heard to so good advantage since his return from Europe. He also played the accompaniments to the Choral Society in a_ perfectly acceptable | maprer. In one number there was a four- hand accompaniment, Mrs. Thomas playing with Mr. Lawrence, Dr. Bischcff accomp: nied Mrs. Shir-Cliff and Miss Alice Bur- bage performed the same duty for Miss Powell. The concert as a whole was very enjoyable and the handling of the chorus by Prof. Kaspar gives pleasurable antici- pation of an excellent performance of “The Messiah,” which will be given as usual during the Christmas week. “Lights and Shadows of Home” is the subject of a‘lecture that will be delivered tonight at North Capitol M. E. Church by Rev. W. I. McKenney of Baltimore. It will be handsomely illustrated by stereop- ticon views and will be interspersed with songs. —Roland Reed will appear to- Albaugh’: night in “The Woman Hater,” by David D. Lioyd. This will be his first appearance in this city in the character Samuel Bun- dy, and it is conceded by all to be the best piece of acting in Mr. Reed's repertoire. The play is excruciatingly funny and Mr. Reed is ably supported by the other members of the company. “The Woman Hater” will be given tonight and tomorrow night, while “Lend Me Your Wife” will be given at the matinee. Lecture on Memory.—Prof. A. S. Boyd will tonight expiain his system of memory in a lecture at Masonic Temple. These lectures of Prof. Bovd have excited great interest and have been attended by many notable people. His explapation of his sys- tem is clear and concise and all in the audience receive some benefit. Prof. Eweli's Lectures.—Tonight at the First Baptist Church Prof. L. Ewell will deliver the second in his series of il- lustrated lectures, taking for his subject “Jerusalem and Its Neighborhood.” Warde ani James in “Othello.”—A schol- arly and at the same time powerful per- formance of “Othello” was given at the New National Theater last night by the Warde and James combination. The play is one that is well adapted to a display of the forces of this organization. Mr. James in the title role and Mr. Warde as Iago, both have excellent opportunity for the dis- play of the abilities which they unquestion- ably possess. ——_— Merit Will Tell. The fact that Hood's Sarsuparilla cures this severest form of Scrofula, absolutely proves its great merit as a blood purifier. “Garnerville, N. Y., April 17, 1803. “C. I, Hood & Co., Lowell: Mother has de- rived such marvelous benefit from Hood’s Sarsapa- rilla that she wants me to write about it. A year ago the grip left her with PAINS AROUND HER HEART And dreadful faint feelings. Then her neck began io swell and became very unsightly; she could net keep anything on her stomach; she was rapidly running down, and we were very anxious about her. We read of a case of goitre cured by Hood's Sarsaparilla, and she decided to try this medicine. Before she had taken one bottle the swelling be- fxn to decrease; she continued with the medicine And nas continued to improve till she has REGAINED PERFECT HEALTH And strength. She weighs 15 pounds and our whole family can truthfully say Hood's Sarsapa- Filla is a blessing to mankind. We believe it saved mother from the grave." Miss GERTRUDE SLAUSON, Garnerville, N. Y.
