12 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1893—TWELVE PAGES. GUNTON TEMPLE MEMORIAL Dedicated Yesterday Afternoon With Appropriate and Impressive Ceremonies. Ad iresses by We! ‘Known Pastors— Liberal Respouse to an Appeal for Funds—The Service. In the presence of an audience which filled every foot of room within and even extended beyond the doors of the edifice, the Gunton-Tempie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Mth and KR streets northwest, was | deaicated yesterday afternoon. The hand- some church was fully described in Satur- day's Star, and the throng which gathered within its walls yesterday afternoon com- prised not only many of the most promi- ment members of t Presbyterian faith here, but also very many of other denomi- nations, including pastors of the local Pres- byterian and othe> churches. The gather- ing was, as was remarked during the exer- cises, in perfect harmony with the magnifi- ceat building. Great palms, immense bunches of chrysarthemums and beautiful Foses were grouped about the altar, adding greatly to the beautiful interior of the edi- fice. The exercises were commenced with an organ prelude by the organist of the | church, Mr. Charles S. Eiliot, after which the quartet choir of the First Presbyterian Church—Messrs. William D. McFarland, first tenor; H. O. Simonds, second tenor; Gabriel F. Johnston, barytone and director; G. B. Griffith, basso, and C. G. Woodward, Organist—rendered a selection. ‘The pastor of the church, the Rev. G. B. Patch, then introduced the Rev. Chas. B. Ramsdell, who invoked the Divine blessing, praying that God would bless the church and its pastor aud people; that it might ; forever be a fountzin of truth and good- ness, and.be the means of bringing many to be born again in the spirit of the Lord. A bass*solo—“In This Celestial Dwelling” —was sung by Mr. G. B. Griffith, and the Rev. Teunis S. Hamlin read Scripture se- lections from the 40th Exodus; 7th Chron- icles, 12th verse; 10th St. John, 27th verse, and the lth Revelations, 20th verse. The anthem, “O, God, Thou Art My God,’ was then rendered by the choir, the selec- tion being followed by the ceremony of de- lvering the keys of the church, Dr. Wright, on behalf of Mrs. Tempe, handing the keys to Mr. A. G. M. Prevost. chairman of the board of trustees of the church. Financial Talk. Following this ceremony the Rev. Dr. W. A. Bartlett briefly spoke of the financial condition of the church. Stating that the church had but twe small debts on its hands, one of $9,000 on the chapel near by. and one of $1,500 ir connection with the old building, he explained that the church de- sired to secure the latter amount during the afternoon services. It pleased him, said Dr. Bartlett. to observe so many dif- ferent denominations represented in the au- dience, and he was sure, for instance, that the Methodists would prove as liberal as they were mighty in prayer, and the Baptists would find water enough for them. It was a blessed thing to give. In a pleasant way, Dr. Bartlett then appealed to the congregation to con- tribute the $1,500, ana as a result of his eloquence it was announced after a while that $%0 had been realized. Of this amount the pastor of the church, the Rev. G. B. Patch, contributed $100, Dr. W. A. Bartlett, $50, and Mr. B. H. Warner, Mrs. Wm. B. Gurley, and Mr. M. G. Emery, $0 each. Other Addresses. During the collection the precentor of the church, Mr. Geo. A. Prevost, sang Parker’s “Jerusalem,” after which the pastor pre- sented the Rev. J. R. Milligan of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, Del., as an old classmate, who very briefly spoke from the last verse of the last chapter of Ezekiel, “And the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘The Lord is there. The choir next sang the anthem, “I Can- mot Always Trace the Way,” after which the Rev. Byron Sunderland delivered the dedicatory prayer, returning thanks for the preservation of the Christian church, for the noble gift of God's handmaid, and con- cluding: “We dedicate this building to Thy service for all time to come. Here may ‘Thy word be spoken, Thy praise be sung; here may fervent prayers be offered; here may be the solemn rites, the nuptial altar, the tear for the dead, and that greatest of all, the blessed supper in memory of the dying Christ.” Led by the precentor, the congregation sang a dedicatory hymn, written by the pastor of the church. The benediction was then pronounced by the Rev. J. G. Craighead. oo A GREAT WHITE SEPULCHRE. Desolation and Solitude at the Ex- position Grounds. One week ago yesterday nearly 147,000 Persons paid to view the White City and its treasures intact; yesterday the visitors could have been put on the floor of the ad- ministration rotunda without removing the half-dollar model of the treasury. A few strangers who happened to be in the city came to see the dismantled fair, probably for the first time, and some Chicagoans were to_be found in the fine arts palace, taking a last quiet look at the paintings and sculptures. Not a single state or foreign building was open, and the doors of some departmental palaces were closed. Jackson Park was a great white sepulchre, the soll- tude of which was not even disturbed by the hammering sounds and the wagon rumblings of last week. The Ferris wheel revolved slowly without passengers, and the deserted midway was harder to break into than a bank. Cars were run on the intra- mural railroad, without enough passengers to pay expenses. Dispute Over Beer Awards. Agents of the St. Louis brewing firm which claims to have received the highest award, according to the chemist’s report, and accuses a majority of the jurors on beer of tampering with the report in the interest of a Milwaukee brewery, are determined to Probe to the bottom and demand a change of the figures in accordance with their chemical report. Government Chemist Wylie, who had charge of the analysis, will reach Chicago teday, having been summoned by the bureau of awards for the purpose of answering cer- tain questions calculated to refute or sub- stantiate the charges. His report is in the hands of National Commissioner Coburn, | ene of the three supervisors appointed by Chairman Thacher. The St. Louis people claim that the percentages of the Mil- waukeeybrewers’ exhibits were changed only by reason of a clerical error, and that the vernment chemist’s examination will re- ire the figures to be lowered. If they fail to get satisfaction from the bureau of awards an appeal will be taken to the com- mission and to the courts if necessary. The preliminary investigation will be held next ‘Tuesda: Denatio From Costa Rica. The government of Costa Rica has, through its commissioner, donated the main | Portion of its world’s fair exhibits to the trustet of Fairmount Park museum, in Philidelphia. The Costa Rica exhibit is al- Most entirely composed of the natural} products of that country, and includes a most valuable collection of native woods. ‘There is also an interesting school exhibit. The government spent nearly $10,000 on its display at the world’s fair.and the Philadel- phia museum gets the richest part of it. Prof. Wilson, who represents the trustees of the museum and the city of Philadelphia, has been in Chicago for a couple of weeks, and has secured several valuable contribu- tions from the world’s fair exhibitors. The donation of the Costa Rica exhibit is one of the largest that has been made to any mu- seum. A Mammoth Junk Shop. The exposition is about to establish a ™mammoth junk shop in the annex of the transportation building, where will be of- fered for sale such material used in making the show as can be carted into the building. | Chairs and steam pipes, road make7s and trucks, horses and electric light wires, fire- engines and office furniture, speaking tubes , patrol wagons and cots, chains ns and horse whips, ellin's in honor fs Food world’s fair whieh the lua. J cured by deed of trust cu timber and towels, drinking cups and pitch- forks, harness and lumber rope and brick, carpets and flowerpots, souvenir coins and other articles, too numerous to mention, will be for sale. In this way the exposition expects to be enriched by the sale of things that were necessary in the operation of the exposi- tion. The exposition company wants to sell the golden door of the transportation build- ing to some speculator, who, they claim, can make money by cutting it into chunks to be sold as souvenirs. Many requests have come from fraternity lodges for pieces of wood from vazious buildings to be made into gavels. The Columbian Maseum. There is no longer any doubt that the sub- scriptions of world’s fair stock, amount of $2,000,000, which is one of the con- ditions of Marshal Field’s magnificent gifts | to the Columbian museum, will be made. Mr. Field did not stipulate any limit of time within which the stock should be turned in. Several important and valuable exhibits have been purchased, othe-s donated, and the committee is at work just as hard it it knew the success of the museum to be a certainty. The Chicago City Railway Company has contributed $50,000 in cash and $10,000 shares of exposition stock to the museum. In ad- dition to this, a telegram was received from Washington, saying the caravels would be kept at Chicago until spring, by which time, it is expected, Congress will have given the boats to the, museum. Among other valua- ble gifts offered yesterday was the original royal crown that belonged to his royal high- ness, the late Duke of Sussex, uncle of | Queen Victoria. The crown is made of gold, silver and purple velvet. It was last worn by the duke on the occasion of the queen’s coronation. = 000 A_whale’s throat is so small that you could choke him with your fist, and he feeds on the smallest things in the sea.
