12 ‘THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1893—I'WELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS.| TAKOMA PARK, ‘Takoma Lodge, No. 24, I. O. O. F., held a sargely attended meeting in their hall ‘Thursday evening, when the initiatory de- gree was worked. This lodge is pianning to Bive a course of Interesting lectures dcrirg the winter, and are also making preparation for the visitation of the Grand Lodge on the 2d imstant, which visitation was de- ferred by illness of Mr. S. G. Harris. Mr. Wm. F. Hart, general inspector Washington Gas Light Company, was in Takoma Tuesday, measuring for the lamps to be placed in position as rapidly as pos- sible, on Oak avenue to Magnolia, thence to Chestnut, along Chestnut to Judge Miller's house, and along Carroll avenue to Muple avenue. The lamps and piping are already in the, park and the work Is being pushed toward completion as rapidly as possible. The ringing of door-bells, throwing of cab- bages against doors, and a few pranks of minor importance, was the extent of the Halloween mischief. Nothing :o --ompare with that of last year, unless the rasvality of Saturday night was in anticipation of that anniversary. Mrs. Jno. Finch has returned from Chi- cago, where she spent ten days in seeing the fair. Miss Lydia Brawner of Wesley Heights, after a visit to the Misses Lewis and Lay, has gone to Rockville, where she will spend a few days, enjoying among other things a dance to have been given last evening. The many friends of Maj. Chas. F. Lewis of this place will be glad to learn of his appointment and qualification as post office inspector. The latter occurred yesterday. Maj. Lewis’ former connection with the in- ternal revenue and post office departments eminently qualify him for this responsible position. The condition of Charles, the young son of Mr. J. Vance Lewis, is mu: improved during the past week, and his ohysician ¢n- ee Prospects of a speedy comvaiesc- nce. The placing of heaters in the Brightwood railway ca-s is a step in the right direction, and now, before a large number of the pa- trons of the road vacate it for the winter, let the broken glass be replaced and the draughts shut out, the doors kept closed, fares collected through the slot made for that purpose, instead of opening and hold- ing open the door, with the strong current of air that passes through. Two weeks later it will too late. The Takoma Park Public Library Co. held a meeting at the library, at residence of Mr. Allen R. Foote, corner Maple and Tulip avenues, Wednesday evening. Circu- lars have been issued, inviting the co-opera- tion of every resident of Takoma in expand- ing this field of usefulness. The excellent nucleus, given in so public spirited a man- ner by Mr. Foote, deserves the recognition of every individual. It is especially urged upon the residents that they evince an in- terest by visiting it often. Twelve gentle- men have volunteered that the library is open every evening from 7:30 to 1 o'clock, and all are earnestly invited to use the Ubrary as a reading room free of charge. Much interest is evinced in the flag drill and concert to take place in the chapel here tonight, for the benefit of the Sunday school, and, from the number of tickets sold, @ crowded house is anticipated. Notwithstanding the distance, the prayer meeting at Mz. C. A. Best's Monday even- ing attracted a large number of residents as well as Washingtonians. The Takoma Park Dramatic Club cele- brated the Halloween occasion at the home of the Misses Danforth, with appropriate games and amusements, not forgetting the tes at the midnight ho present were Miss Colney of Hyattsville, a guest of the house; Misses Gussie Thomas, Maud _ Watkins, Bertie, Fannic and Edyth Page, Esther and Daisy Danforth, and Messrs. W. F. Tucker, Chas. and Will Page, C. C. Lamond, Ward Wavorite and F. E. Skinner. —_— — SLIGO. ‘The venerable Dr. Henry Ford Condict Jied at the residence of his son-in-law,Capt. Wilbur, at the advanced age of nearly} ninety years, after a lingering illness. Dr. Condict, during many years, was a suc- cessful practitioner in the District of Co- lumbia, settled later in Montgomery county, where he made many friends, who regret the affliction caused by his death to the members of his family. His daughter, who is the wife of Capt. Wilbur, has been un- ceasing in her devotion to him during the many months of his paralysis. The funeral! took place today and his remains were in- terred at Rock Creek cemetery. Owing to the success of the revival serv- ices at the M. E. Church of this village it has been decided to continue the good work for another week. One more of our citizens, Mr. Oscar Woodward, returned home from a pilgrim- age to the Mecca whence the patriotic peo-| ple of the world have migrated during} the past six months. Mrs. Wm. Virts has recovered from a recent severe spell of sickness and her con- valescence is a source of gratification to her friends. At Woodside, which adjoins Sligo, Mrs. Wm. H. Oakes. from the west, is visiting Mrs. J. E. Bradford. Mr. James E. Benedict is in Chicago and is expected home in a few days. Mrs. W. H. Towers of New York is the} guest of Mrs. Oscar Woodward. — FOREST GLEN. A delightful Halloween party was held at the residence of the Misses Manning, where some funny instances occurred, one | of them being a visit to a near church yard in which is interred the remains of many respected deceased residents of the county. The party, consisting of the younger per- sons, started at 12 o'clock, for the grave- yard to ascertain to whom they should be wedded. With laughing eyes the lassies, accompanied by their valiant lads, went forth in high glee to see the traditional ghost. Upon arriving at the city of the dead they were met by a ghostly figure which turned their exuberant spirits into fright, and caused a stampede, their visit having been anticipated by one of the| party, a young lady, who had dressed her- | self in ghostly attire. The laugh was on the boy who drew his arms in their de- fense when their alarm was abated by the discovery that the ghost was a girl, and the girl was a member of their party. | They then returned to the house, and wound up the festivities in the usual manner. Among others, there were present, on this occasion, Misses var Entress, Beadsley and Page. and Messrs. Ray, Page, DeShicids and Danforth. The Consolidated Quarry Company of Capitol View has suspended operations for the present. A new house has been added to Forest Gien, and Mr. Mill, its proprietor, will occupy it in a few days. Mrs. H. Jameson, the recent guest of Mrs. M. S. Gibson, has returned to her home in Washington. After a pleasant visit to the Misses Man- | ning at this place, the Misses van Entress and Miss Beadsley have returned to their homes in Washington. Mrs. La Rue of Linden left today on a, Bae to friends in Philadelphia and New’) ork. | Mr. W. P. Miller, owing to pressing calls, shortened his visit to Frederick, and is now | at home. Mr. and Mrs. F. Melin and son are cn a visit to friends in Linden Maj. C. H. Lawrence has returned from Chicago. eee ROCKVILLE. What came near proving a fatal accident @ccurred on the Metropolitan branch rail- road yesterday evening about 4:30 o'clock, at | @ point about one mile west of this place. At that hour Mr. John W. Keys was driving @ four-horse team across the track in front of the residence of his father, when the horses and wagon were struck by the Chi- cago express train going east. The wagon ‘was torn to pieces, one of the horses killed and Mr. Keys was hurt in one of his legs and body and badly shaken up. Persons who saw the accident state that the train was running at a high rate of speed and @id not sound the whistle for the crossing. After striking the wagon, the train kept on fits course, and no effort was made to ascer- tain what damage had been done. The appearance here on Wedne @eputy marshal from the United cuit court at Baltimore caused comment, and when it was a: he was here for the purpose of summoning witnesses to ay before the grand jury of that court in order to prosecute persons here who are all 1 to be engaged in sell- | ing intoxicating liquors without having a government license, much excitement en-| Sued. Some eight or persons were served with summonses to appear before the grand Jury on Friday. It is not known through what source the court learned of these vio- lations revenue laws, but there is evi- dently considerable anxiety among the sup- ‘lay of a/ tates cir- | onsiderable | rtained that | posed “moonshine” venders in this locality. Contractor L. F. Dudley has just com- pleted a tine residence for Mr. E. T. Kauff- man at Garrett Park, at a cost of $2,3uu. One portion of the house ts 23 x 32 feet and the other 23x 36 feet, two stories in height, with tall attic. The building is of modern cottage style and is finished throughout in good style. Mr. Wm. W. Welsh yesterday purchased of Samuel T. Briggs lot 23 in block 4, Rock- ville park. Forest Oak Lodge, Knights of Pythias, at Gaithersburg, are perfecting arrangements for holding a fair and festival on ‘Shanks- giving day. The Opera House at this place was last night crowded with the beauty and fashion of this and adjoining counties, Washington, Baltimore, Alexandria and other places, the occasion being the first hop of the season given by the young gentlemen of Rockville and vicinity. The large hall was hand- somely decorated and fine music was pro- vided for the occasion. Dancing com- menced at 9 o'clock, and from that time untii the early hours of the morning the festivities were kept up. The exquisite toilets of the ladies were a striking fea- ture of the brilliant assemblage and at- tracted much attention. Among those in attendance were “irs. An interesting time was spent hearing the verbal reports from the dif- ferent societies represented in the confer- ence.
