12 SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. The clearing of the financial atmosphere so that business men may see ahead, gives excellent indications for the future of Alex- andria. Although the disturbed condition of business did not prevent the continued operation of Alexandria enterprises, yet no extensions have been made and operations have been conducted on a smaller szale. Now, however, with the opening of the new season, work long designed will probably be carried out. The Chemical Fertilizer Company at the north end of the city harbor, will, it is likely, erect immense buildings for the expansion of their work Row conducted in that neighborhood. Haskin’s Wood Vulcanizing Company's Sigantic plant at the south end of the har- bor, which has already made progress on a scale of magnitude never before known here, will quicken its steps, complete its machinery and begin its Titanic work. The enterprises of New Alexandria will also ex- pand at the touch of good times, and it is likely that the Mt. Vernon Electric Rail- road Company will add somewhat to the number of poles on the streets, and give small factories, etc., an opportunity to electric motors for their business. It may be that, under the revivying touth of zood times, the Potomac shoe factory will begin operations. A number of new buildings are already talked of, and at the alderman’s chamber conference, a few evenings ago, it was announced that the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. while it did not intend to be forced into building a new depot here, intended, before many months, to :<piace what Mr. Beckham calls “its old frei~at car house,” which serves as a depot here, by a neat and commodious building. Saturday night is now the political night of Alexandria, by way of preparing meterial for thought and talk on Sunday. The Alexandria alms house is now in the charge of the new superintendent, Mr. W. M. Smith. who entered upon the discharge of his duties this morning. The frame dwelling and lot on the south side of Wolfe street adjoining the corner of Columgus street, has been bought by C. H. Madella, employed in Washington, from Mr. | J. A. Stoutengurgh. $1,000 was the price paid. An alarm of fire was sounded last night about 7 o'clock, calling out the firemen. A lamp had exploded at the residence of Mr. | George Darley on South Royal near Prince | street, and some damage was done, but the departments did not go into service. Workmen are now busy in laying a sewer from Leadcbeater's drug store on Fairfax street, to connect with the sewer laid some time since in Fayette alley, and the work of repairing the streets between the electric railroad tracks has also been begun. ene HYATTSVILLE. The recent quarterly meeting of Mont- gomery County Grange, No. 7, held at Barnesville, was unusually well attended. ‘The grange hall, in which the meeting was held was rendered very attractive by a dis- play of banners, fine fruits and flowers. One branch of Japanese persimmons heav- ily laden with fruit of large size, raised in the garden of Mr. John W. Brown, at- tracted much attention. Most of the ses- sion was occupied in the discussion of the subject of a new assesment of the property of the state. It was resolved that the bur- den of public expenses should be equally laid on the citizens of the state according to their worth in property, and that the next legislature should be requested to pass a@ mew assessment law which should include an equal tax on all prop- erty, public, private and corporate, real and personal, so that all prop- erty shall bear an equal share. The listing system was also rec mended as the most economical and co: method to arrive at the desired end. C. J. Burdette and E. L. Hartshorne were elected delegates to the coming session of the state grange. The | next meeting of the County Grange wiil be heid at Olney on the last Thursday in Jan- uary next. The Spanish cruiser Alfonso XII. shelled the coast villages from Melilla to the Chafa- Tinas Islands yesterday morning. The com- mander then ceased firing in response to a request of the tribesmen for a parley. The cruisers Conde de Venadito and Isla de Luzon had been shelling the Riff trenches in the neighborhood of Melilla all day. A heavy cannonade was heard at Melilla from the direction of Frachana, but nothing was known of the action there. The forts are continually shelling the tribesmen engaged in making trenches in their vicinity, and it is known that the | casualties among the Riffs have been heavy. The extent of their losses cannot, however, be even approximately estimated, and probably will never be known, as the dead are hastily buried. The Spaniards are doing the greater part of their fighting be- hind the walls of the forts, and their losses are, therefore, relatively small. In the present excited state of the popu- lar feeling at Madrid, any loss is greatly magnified, and this fact accounts for the stories circulated by alarmists, who imagine that the Spanish troops will all fall vic- tims to the fury of the Riffs. The situation is not so bad as has been painted, for Gen. Macias, commanding the troops, has in- formed the government that his forces are sufficiently strong for defensive purposes. ‘The sortie made by Gen. Ortega had much to do with the changed situation. It can be said that prior to this the outlook for those in the forts was not at all cheering. For two days Fort Rostragordo and Fort Cabrerazio were so invested by the Riffs that no communication could be had with | Melilla. The food and water supplies were exhausted, and Gen. Ortega determined to take what looked like desperate chances to replenish these supplies. The sortie was a dashing one. At the head of his troops, who were on the double quick, Gen. Ortega ad- vanced upon the trenches of the enemy. The Riffs poured a hot fire at the advanc- ing Spaniards, but their aim was remarka- bly bad. Over the trenches went the Spaniards with fixed bayonets, whereupon the Riffs broke and fled in great disorder. While some of the Spanish troops pursued them, others devoted themselves to ‘provis- | ioning the forts. In the meantime, those in | the forts leid in a supply of water, and by the time the troops returned, they were ready to withstand a two weeks’ siege. The Spanish loss in the sortie was four killed | and twelve wounded. The Riffs lost many killed. and a large number of them were captured. Phe hatred of England and the English by the French flashes out afresh with every new outbreak of the Riffs at Melilla. Great Britain is accused of working secretly against Spanish interests in Morocco and in- triguing to prevent the Moors from paying any indemnity, of course, with the final ob- ject of securing possession of Tangier. The extremists of the Paris press declare that France is prepared to help Spain frustrate | British foul play in the Mediterranean and urge that the defenses of Cadiz be strength- ened. to oo PROSPECT OF A LYNCHING. Crime Attempted by a Florida Negro. A special from Orlando, Fla., sa: dastardly attempt was made by a negro recently to commit assault upon a white woman, but it failed through her strength and courage. Miss Lillie Laubach was alone at her home on the outskirts of the city about 10 o'clock in the forenoon, when @ young negro came into the house and at- tempted to assault her. Being a large, strong girl, she succeeded in beating him off, but for a long time the struggle was kept up. At last he released his hold on her and seized a bottle of carbolic acid from the mantel in the room apparently intending to try to force her to swallow it, but she broke it in pieces in his hands and it must have left its mark on him for the skin peeled off of her neck where he after- ward tried to choke her. At last he seemed to give up his original intentions, but threw coal oil on the floor and on her dress, set fire to the buiiding and left. Half an hour afterward the girl's brother, Harvey, a lad of seventeen years, found her tying unconscicus on the floor and the room atire. He put out the flames and re- stored her to consciousness, when she told her story. Hundreds of men and boys then scoured the woods around Orlando for the negro, but without any results. : Several clews were run down, but with- out finding any one. She describes her as- sailant as a medium-sized man, with very light smooth cheeks, a small moustache, a black coat and a white shirt. She says that she would know him at sight. Two men were taken on suspicion, but were said by her not to be the men so they were turned loose. It is believed the man’s hands are badly burned with the acid. If caught he will be hanged or burned at once. Horrible eee Chinese Theater Manager Jaile The Chinese Theater in the Midway Plaisance at Chicago is in trouble with the government and it is claimed that the proprietors are likely to suffer for the al- leged smuggling of nearly 500 Chinese labor- ers into this country. Choy Sing, the di- rector of the theater, has been arrested, charged with being in the country against the provisions of the Geary law. Sing was unable to give bond and was committed to jail. By a special act of Congress the own- ers of the theater were permitted to im- port 300 Chinese for the theater and village. ‘The full number was brought into the coun- try, it is said, but only about thirty were ever employed in the village. The case against Sing will be a test case and if he is convicted all the others who can be found will be arrested and sent back with him. It is also said that a case charging conspiracy will be commenced against the proprietor of the theater. AUCTION SALES. FUTURE DAYS. C. G. SLOAN & CO., Avctioneers, 1407 @ st.
