12 /THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTO SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. The event of last night was the confer- ence of the city committee on streets with a number of gentlemen relative to the bill now in the hands of that committee requir- ing the railroad companies to place gates at the street crossings. The conference was held in the chamber of the board of alder- men. Chairman Caton presided and Attor- ney F. L. Smith, with Superintendent Brooks of the Pennsylvania railroad, and Mr. L. Marbury, local attorney of the Rich- mond and Danville railroad, appeared on behalf of those corporations. Messrs. John G. Beckham, Chas. King, Wm. H. Helmuth, Health Officer Purvis, with many other citi- zens, appeared in favor of the bill. The ad- Vocates of the bill, several of whom had themselves been injured or in danger of death by the running of the trains through the streets, insisted that the present method of watchmen was entirely insufficient for the protection of life and limb of passers on the streets. The representatives of the W. & S. raliroad company declared it was a poor corporation, involved in many suits, and that only lately it had its ex- penses. This position was ridiculed by some of the citizens, and illustrations were given of the profits of the Pennsylvania company. Mr. J. T. Beckham spoke especially of the negligence of the railroad in regard to Alexandria, and after the matter had been fully considered the conference was closed and the committee went into private ses- sion. It is believed that a favorable report on the bill will be made by the majority of the committee. Ctty Treasurer Marlow, who, as an- nounced in The Star yesterday, has been reappointed city treasurer, will enter upon the e of his duties on the 7th of next November. The festival of All Saints was observed here today by two services in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and by one service in bag or P. E. =. Ing October marriage licenses were issued by the clerk of the corporation court here to seventeen couples, a much larger number than usual. During the same month five Alexandria couples were mar- ried in Washington. A considerable congregation attended, last night, the devotional exercises of a union mission meeting at the Lee Street Presby- terian Chapel. The revival services also con- tinued at Trinity M. E. Church. Mr. James E. Sampson has been elected Cc. T. of Talisman Lodge of Good Templars. The races were begun this afternoon at the Gentlemen's Driving Park near this city, and a considerable number of inter- ested spectators are present. a eae FALLS CHURCH. The birthday entertainment in the lecture room of the Presbyterian Church on Mon- day night was a most interesting one. It was held under the auspices of the ladies ef the church whe are interested in ex- Unguishing the debt on the parsonage. During the past three years the ladies have raised aver $3,000 and the debt has been re- duced to $230. The amount realized Monday night was $2, and this, with the balance in the treasury, will reduce the indebtedness to @ little less than $200. The literary fea- ture of the entertainment consisted of the following, viz: Anthem, “I Have Set Watchmen,” by the choir; reading, “Not One to Spare,” Miss Mildred Searle; solo, “The Better Land,” Miss Maud Rathbun; instru- mental music, Zeta Phi March, Mrs. M. A democratic meeting was held at the Academy of Music last night, which was largely attended by democrats not only from Laurel, but from many of the other districts of the county as far as Marlboro’ and Bowie. Vansville and Bladensburg were well represented and the democratic association of Prince George's county, with headquarters at Lakeland, sent a large del- egution. Music was furnished by the Laurel Military Band, which paraded the streets before marching to the Academy. The meeting was called to order by Mr. J. T. Burch, president of the Democratic Association, and C. S. Wills was elected chairman, with Dr. T. M. Baldwin, editor of the Laurel Democrat, as secretary. Mr. George M. Smith, candidate for the legisla- ture, was the first speaker and addressed the meeting upon the issues presented to the voters at the coming election. Mr. Dent Downing, also a candidate for the legislature, was next Introduced, and spoke of the charge that had been made that the demo- rats were responsible for the closing of the sctools of the county for two months last year. Mr. Downing showed that this was edused by the decrease in the amount re- ceived from the state on account of the wchool fund, which was $4,000 less than we received formerly, the result of the appor- Yionment upon the basis of population ac- cording to the last census, and the increased expenses arising from the building of sever- al new school houses in the county, for which the school funds provided, with no increase in taxation. Mr. Downing also de- clared himself in favor of a new assessment law, no assessment having been mage in the county for seventeen years, while there had been many changes fn the value of property @uring that time. Mr. Joseph S. Wilson, the third candidate for the legislature, was called upon, and showed that the ticket had been chosen by the nominating convention by acclamation end was, therefore, entitled to demand and Feceive the unanimous vote of all the demo- erats. Mr. Wilson also declared himself in favor of the new assessment law and advo- cated better roads in the county. Hon. Barnes Compton, member of Con- gress from this district, was introduced and was met with a storm of applau: Before Proceeding with his speech, Mr. Compton was surprised by the presentation, by some of his admirers from Bladensburg, of a beautiful floral horseshoe, as a token of the regard in which he is held by his admirers there. Mr. Compton responded to the pres- entation with fitting words and then began his address. Mr. Compton spoke for about forty minutes and at the conclusion of his speech was heartily applauded. Mr. A. S. Golisborough of Baltimore also spoke, as did Mr. Milton E. Smith, editor of the Church News. Prof. Joyce favored the audience with some of his choicest solos up- on the cornet and was recalled time and again. The meeting adjourned at a late hour. A democratic meeting was held at Bright- seat yesterday afternoon. Mr. Richard F. Brown presided, and Mr. Robt. M. Thomp- son acted as secretary. Speeches were made by Jos. S. Wilson, Dent Downing and Geo. M. Smith, candidates for the house of delegates. Geo. M. Henault of Kent dis- trict and Wm. I. Hill of Mariboro’. ‘A democratic meeting was also held at | Gundling’s store, near Lanhan’s station, last night, at which Mr. Richard Cross pre- sided. The porch was decorated with flags and Japanese lanterns. Speeches were made by Geo. M. Smith, Joseph 8. Wilson and Dent Downing, candidates for the house of delegates; Wm. I. Hill of Marl- boro’, James C. Rogers of Bladensburg, Brooke Hunter of Hyattsville, and Geo. M. Henault of Kent district. Politics are now becoming very exciting in this county, and both the democratic and republican parties are making every effort to win. It is generally believed that the former party will be successful. Very few Personalities are being indulged in by eith- er party this campaign. The public school and assessment questions are being fre- quently discussed. The Hyattsville Choral Society, assisted by the Ladies’ Cecelian Quartet, will give a concert at the Presbyterian Church in this village next Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. The following talent will take part: Miss Lizzie M. Brown, soprano and guitar; Miss Georgia A. Knight, soprano and mandolin; Miss Nettie Morrison, contralto and banjo, and Miss Jennie King-Morrison, contralto and mandolin. The concert promises to be an interesting affair. KENSINGTON. A most delightful Halloween party was given last evening by Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Stoek to their niece, Miss Miner of South Dakota. The hospitable home was the scene of much gayety and mirth as the lads and lasses vied with other in their efforts to win the first or booby prize in the potato race and tested the mysteries of | the fates. All the Halloween charms were indulged in and the “wee small” hours were drawing on ere the guests took their departure. Among those present were the Mesdames Stokes, Gould and Moore, Misses Johnson, Gartrell, Wheatley, Cassidy, Langille, Thompson, Calhoun, Lewis, Ogden and Reese, and Drs. Wm. and John Lewis, Messrs. Stokes, Thomp- son, Calhouti, Dulin, Little and Baxter. Mr. B. H. Warner spent Monday in our village. Prof. Langille has returned from a visit to the world’s fair. Brown of Bedford, Mass., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Libby of Kensington Park. Dr. J. L. Lewis has gone to Dawson- ville, Md., for a short visit. a ANACOSTIA. Halloween was observed with the usual amount of tricks, tick tacks, fun and flour. Young Anacostia was in high glee, and the senior part of the population joined in the chorus. Some of the victims got mad, but the majority accepted their trials as a mat- ter of course. The police report an orderly evening. Mr. Daniel Wilkerson has returned from a trip to his former home at Omaha. He will probably return to that city. Mr. J. W. Tolson, at present, perhaps, the most prominent and promising candidate for the postmastership, told a reporter for The Star that he had no idea as to when the matter would be settled. So far as he knew, things were at a standstill. The recent benefit for St. Barnabas Church ts said to have netted an agree- able sum. There is a proposition to surface Navy Place. Miss Annie Smith has recovered. Pharmacist Weiss says that the health of Anacostia was never better, and that the healthfulness of the village is on the up grade. Gratifying reports are made by the man- agement of the local branch of the Union Mision. Mr. Daniel Smithson is convalescent. a LINDEN. The improvements to the Presbyterian Church have been completed. A new pul- pit has been added and other minor re- pairs made. Mrs. H. B. Scott of Grinnell, Iowa, is spending the winter with her nephew, Mr. L. B. Thomson. Wm. W. Wright, jr. and Dr. Wright have returned from a hunting trip on the lower Potomac, where they were very suc- cessful. Maj. C. H. Lawrence has gone to Chi- cago for a short stay.
