16 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1893—SIXTEEN PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. HYATTSVILLE. The republicans held a large and enthusi- astic meeting at the Palo Alto House in Bladensburg last night. The place was brilliantly f!luminated and the platform was decorated with flags. Patriotic airs were rendered by a band from Washington. Mr. John FE. Latimer presided and introduced the speakers and A. Lencaster, jr., acted @s secretary. The speakers of the even- ing were John B. Contee, candidate for the house of delegates; Capt. Wm. M. Potter of Laurel, Wm. Meloy, candidate for the state senate; Geo. Holmes, candidate for the house of delegates; F. H. Smith of Hyattsville, John W. Belt, clerk of the cir- cuit court; F. A. Holden of Hyattsville and Wm. R. Smith, candidate for the house of delegates. The speakers were loudly ap- plauded. Golden Rule Lodge, No. 4, I. O. M., held an interesting meeting at Mechanics’ Hall last night, with Worthy Master Anderson in the chair and W. Brooke Hunter secretary. Mr. Geo. S. Britt was elected to take the first or mechanic’s degree. It was decided to give a public entertainment and supper on the 2th proximo. Mr. Geo. N. Walker entertained the members with a description of his visit to the world’s fair. A dog, supposed to be mad. made its ap- pearance at College Park yesterday and bit Mr. Shipley, the manager of the Maryland Agricultural College farm, and his son. It also bit a cow belonging to Mr. Johnson. a goat and a dog owned by Mr. Eugene Cal- vert. Both dogs were pursued and shot at the station. The affair created considerable excitement. The provision store of Mr. Wm. P. Ma- gruder at Bladensburg was broken into last Sunday morning, but nothing of any con- sequence was missed. Invitations have been issued to the wed- ding of Mr. R. Ford Combs and Miss Mary Margaret Combs, which will take place at St. Matthew's Church, Washington, D. C., on Wednesday evening, November 15, 1893, at 5:30 o'clock. Mr. Combs and his bride will reside in this village. Last evening a meeting of the independent single taxers was held at Glendale, on the Baltimore and Potomac railroad. It was largely attended. This party has arranged the following meetings during the present week: Wednesday evening in Grange Hall in Chillum; Thursday evening in Bladens- burg; tn Laurel some time during the latter part of the week. a BROOKLAND. Revival services are being held by the M. E. Mission in the town hall every even- ing this week. Rev. E. S. Todd of Hamline Church conducted the meeting last night, and on Sunday evening very interesting services were led by Messrs. L. B. Snyder and Alden Procter. ‘The Baptist missionary conquest meeting, under the leadership of Mrs. C. G. Lynch, with the subject “The District of Columbia for Christ,” was very entertaining. Mr. N. A. Robbins gave some interesting state- ments regarding the work of the Central Union Mission, and Mr. C. G. Lynch and Rev. R. R. West followed with instructive remark: Miss Lulu Bowman Is the guest of Mrs. L. G. Golliday. Mrs. Martin Burke has returned from St. Louis and Chicago, and has been visit- ing in Brookland. Mrs. Jas. Garner has returned home after @ pleasant visit with Mrs. W. F. Robbins. Mrs. Wm. Edwards and Mi Eda Will- famson, with Mrs. Frank Williamson of Lambertville, N. J.. were the recent guests of Mrs. Lewis Paxton. Mrs. Catherine Hopkins, who has been spending the summer in Brookland, has re- turned home. The “Linthicum Students” will present several short comedies in the town hal! on Thursday evening. They will entertainment dances at the Post, G. A. R., at the Soldiers’ Home. paneer Tessa aes FREDERICK CITY. In July last Allen Butler, a colored man, formerly of the Middletown valley, this county, was lynched by a mob at his home in Lawrence county, Ill, being charged with abetting a criminal assault upon a white girl. He was a man of wealth, and left an estate valued at $75,000. Since his death a number of claimants to his estate| have sprung up in this and Washington ecunty, and lawyers have been employed by them to look up their interests in the estate. One of the claimants is Mar; Brookes, an aged colored woman, living at Jefferson, this county, who says she is the legal wife of Butler, and can produce the facts to prove it. The first thing in the way of a campaign meeting that has been held by either of the old parties in this county took place Mon- day at Junior Halli, this city, when the democratic county central committee gath- ered at the call of the chairman, Col. L. ‘Victor Baughman, to discuss plans for the quiet and effective work that will be pur- sued Curing the week that yet remains be- fore election day. Delegates from every district in the county were present at the meeting, which was of a most enthusias- tie character. Col. Baughman presided, and J. Roger McSherry was secretary. ‘The district delegates reported that everything is bright for the party in their sections, and it was broadly claimed that the demo- cratic ticket would win by at least 300 ma- jority. But the republicans make a counter claim equally as large, and say that they feel confident of at least electing their can- didate for sheriff. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Abbott, highly es- teemed citizens of Frederick, were married on October 30, 18683, by the late Rev. Dr. Daniel Zachavar, a Reformed preacher of | this city. Monday was therefore the twenty- fifth, or silver, anniversary of their wedding, and they celebrated it in a very pleasant way at their home on South Market street. On the same day the golden wedding anni- versary of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wm. Birley, another highly esteemed couple, was cele- brated at their home on North Market street—the same home in which they were married fifty years ago, and in which they have ever since reside. Many of their children and grandchildren were present, and the event was memorable for its pleas- ure and enjoyment. Thieves a few nights ago brok2 into the blacksmith shop of Jas. Poole at Sabillas- ville, this county, and stole a number of tools, which they made use of in effecting | an entrance to the store of T. F. Eyler, near by. There they secured booty to the amount of $50 worth, and managed to get away without being detected. Gertie, a twelve-year-old daughter of Mr. John D. Miller near Middletown, has been a helpless victim of hip disease for over two years, unable to move or walk in all that time. Recently an operation was per- formed upon her by the professors at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and she has made such rapid improvement that she is now able to walk, with the use of canes, = will, it is said, soon be able to discard em. Cc. McGraw, a prominent citizen of Harper's Ferry, W. Va., died there Monday morning. He was weil known in this city, where he was also related. Miss Nettie M. Purlette of Baltimore, grand superintendent of juvenile temples of the Independent Order of Good Templars of Maryland, and Miss M. E. Gillis of Car- roll county, superintendent of District Lodge, No. 4, have recently organized Crystal Spring Juvenile Temple in this city, with Jacob L. Englebrecht as superinten- dent; Miss Nellie Rigdon. chief templar Miss Mary Hooper, vice templar; Miss Hul- da Brust, secretary, and Bernard Brust, past chief templar. Mrs. E. L. Eldridge of this city, is on a visit to her son, the Rev. E. Olin Eldridge of Washington, D. C. Misses Jennie and Mary Stone of Wash- ington, who have been the guests of the Misses Shriner, this city, have returned —_——_—_ Net So Slow. From the Kansas City Times. There is more or less humbug about the traditional slowness of the messenger boy. At least there is one of them in Kansas City who is abreast of the age In which he | lives. This unformed urchin keeps an ac-| count in one of the banks, and it is growing rapidly, too. The other day he went in to deposit 50 cents. The teller, with more than his customary haughtiness, informed the boy that deposits of less than $1 could not be received by the bank. The youngster | Wasted not a word in argument, but walked quietly to a desk, wrote a check for $1) and presented the same at the window of the paying teller. The check w honored, of course. Then the carrier of messages revisited the receiving teller. “I'd like to deposit $1.50, if you please,” he said. The deposit was accepted, ceiving teller was very much and the re- chagrined. The First Female Criminal to Die at Berlin in Nearly Fifty Yeurs. For the first time since 186 a woman was executed at Berlin yesterday. The vic- tim was Emilie Zillman, of Hammer, Prus- sian Silesia. She had been convicted of the murder of her husband, and the facts elicit- ed at the trial showed that the crime was most deliberate and cold-blooded. Frau Ziliman was forty-five years old. In Germany capital sentences are car- ried out by a headsman, and yesterday Reindel of Magdeburg acted in that capaci- ty. The preparations for the execution were kept -secret. Even Reindel did not, until Sunday night, know who it was he was to decapitate. The condemned woman, who had been incarcerated in the Moabit pris- on, was only apprised of the nearness of her fate at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Up to that time she had firmly believed that the emperor would grant her a respite. When she was told that she was to die yes- terday, she broke dewn completely, and her actions were pitiable. The Moabite prison has no execution yard, and the prisoner was, therefore, transferred to the Ploetzenze prison. She was taken there Sunday in a van, a num- ber of mounted policemen riding around the conveyance. The prison was reached at 2:30 o'clock, and the woman was placed in a cell on the ground floor in the mask's wing. A female warder remained with her throughout the night. When supper time came the prisoner asked that she be served with beefsteak and coffee, remarking, as she proffered her re- quest: “It will be the last time I will want to eat.” She partook very heartily of the food furnished her. As darkness set in she be- came very restless. She would Iie on the pallet for a time and then get up and walk up and down in her narrow cell. Most all the night was passed in this manner, the prisoner continually protesting her innocence. 4 At 7 o'clock yesterday morning the exe- cution attendants appeared in the cell, ac- companied by a clergyman and _ several other persons. Frau Zillman was then told that it was time for the final preparations for death to be made. The woman was in an agony of fear, and made not the slight- est resistance to those detailed to prepare her for her awful fate. A woman stepped up to her as she sat with wide staring eyes on a chair and ex- peditiously cut from, her dress a circular piece about the neck. Then her dark brown hair was twisted into a knot and fastened on the top of the head, leaving her whole neck entirely bare. At 8 o'clock two warders took her by the arms, lifted her from her seat, and half led, half carried her into the court yard where the headsman’s block had been plac- ed. Beside it stood the executioner, resting on the hilt of his heavy sword. Half dead with fear, the woman was placed beside the block, and there sup- ported while Prosecutor Laamann read to her the sentence of death. The prisoner was told to kneel, but she apparently did not hear, and the warders gently but firmly forced her down until her head rested on the block. While they were doing this a handkerchief that had | been temporarily placed around her neck was removed. The next instant after her head touched the block there was a gleaming flash of steel, and the head of the woman dropped into the basket to receive it. As the blood flowed in a torrent from the severed neck the executioner exclaimed: “The sentence of the law has been exe- cuted. May God have mercy upon thou, sinner.” see AGAIN ATTACKED BY RIFFS. Thirty-One Tribes in Morocco Com- bine Against the Spaniards. Among the members of the staff of Gen. | Margallo, the commander of the Spanish roops at Melilla, Morocco, who was killed | Sunday during the fighting with the Riffs, | was Prince Ferdinand of Bourbon, nephew of the ex-King of Naples. He has not been seen since the fight was at its height and it is not known whether he was killed or fell into the hands of the enemy. ‘The public sentiment at Madrid over the repulse of the Spanish forces is hourly in- creasing and the popular ciamor for the | dispatch of a punitive expedition against | the Riffs will undoubtedly force the govern- ment to take prompt measures. As a result of the protracted conference of the leaders of the tribes known collo- quially as the Riffs no less than thirty-one tribes have entered into an alllance to wage a war against the Spaniards. The fool- hardy bravery and fanaticism of the Rifts | is well known to everybody who has ever |had dealings with them, and the govern- ment is censured for not sending as soon las the trouble broke out a sufficient force fastnesses and to keep them there. A dispatch from Melilla states that the Riffs late Sunday resumed their attack on the Spaniards. The fighting was des- perate on both sides, but the Spaniards successfully maintained their positions. ooo JOSIAH QUINCY. ! His Unremitting Industry tn the Man- ipulntion of Patronage. | Washington Good Government. | The retirement of Josiah Quincy from his | assistant secretaryship has not caused so much as a ripple on the surface of things at the business end of the Department o State. It would have been hard at any time during the last six months to find a dozen persons at the department who could tel! whether Mr. Quincy was in Washington o1 abroad, so thoroughly was he absorbed tr matters which neither law nor custom as- signed to the office he was nominally filling The one association with his memory at thc seat of the government is that of unremit- | ting industry in the pursuit and manipula | tion of patronage. | AUCTION SALES.
