12 GIFTS TO HARVARD. Money Forthcoming for Several De- partments. Harvard University has recently been en- riched by several gifts for various depart- ments, some of which have filled wants of long standing. By far the largest of any of the recent gifts to Harvard is that of Dr. Harry Wil- lard Williams, who has given $3,000 as a special fund toward the maintenance of a professorship in ophthalmology in the med- ical school. In 18% Dr. Williams resigned this professorship, which he had held for twenty years. The next largest amount ts $8,233.33, the vecond instalment of Frederick L. Ames’ subscription of $25,000 for the Arnold arbo- Tetum. The arboretum has also received from John L. Gardner for current expenses the sum of $2,000, the second instalment of his subscription of $6,000. The legacy of $6,000, given by Claudius Marcellus Jones, has been devoted to the establishment in the medical school of a scholarship bearing his name, with an in- come at present of $250 per year. The med- ical school has also received from Miss Lucy Ellis the sum of $2,000 for current ex- penses during the present year. Of the sum of $3.500, guaranteed by Arthur Rotch, for instruction in architecture in the Lawrence scientific school for 1393-94, 91.000 has been received. Prof. Shaler has also received at different times for the im- mediate needs of the school $250 from Al- bert A. Pope and $250 from another friend of the college. The law school has received through Mr. Louis Ll. Brandeis the additional sum of $1,000, to provide for the course in the law school for 1392-94 on the peculiarities of Massachusetts law. The botanic garden has received from Miss Anna C. Lowell the sum of $1,000. From Mrs. Henry Draper of New York, about $1,709 on account of the Draper me- morial has been received toward the ex- penses of the observatory. Through Henry W. Spellman $622 has been received on ac- count of the George William Sawin fund. From the will of Edwin Conant about $1.2 has been received. G. W. Wales has made his annual gift of $200 to the college library and Prof. F:.rlow bis annual gift of $450. The library of the German department has received $1s5 through Prof. Schilling, and through Prof. de Sumichrast the French department library has received $120. James Gordon Bennett has also presented to the college $1.00 for the establishment of a prize for “the best essay in English prose upon some subject of American gov- ernmental, domestic or foreign policy of contemporaneous interest. 0 TOOK HIS SECRET WITH HIM. A Kansan Who Forsook Home Comfort Three Years Ago. The strange disappearance of Milton Bradley from his home at El Dorado, Kan., three years ago was a local senation of the hour. His confession of identity and his death at Parsons a few days ago revive the interest in the old story, though they do not solve the mystery of his disappearance. Bradley was a prominent man‘in Butler county, Kan. He was wealthy, owning several farms, and when elected county treasurer moved to El Dorado, the county seat, where he lived and served two or three terms. When he left the farm he developed a great passion for fishing. He, with State Senator Murdock and M. M. Murdock, and four or five cronies in the little country town, were on the Walnut all the time fish- ing for bass, which are found abundantly fm the clear, green, rock-bottomed river. One day Bradley hitched up his covered spring wagon, put a small tent and some cooking utensils in the wagon, with his fishing pole, shotgun and rations, and started for a .three weeks’ outing trip. After he left the bridge across the Walnut at El Dorado he was never seen there again. The very ravines of the Walnut might have swallowed him up, so fa> as any clew as to his whereabouts was concerned. He was a prominent Odd Fellow, anu ..at or- ganization spent several thousand dollars trying to find him. The “flint hills,” twenty miles east of El Dorado—a wild stretch of country wherein there is a “dead man’s gulch” and all sorts of cairns and gulleys—were searched. The Walnut river was dragged for his body. But wagon, gun, tent, man and dog were completely obliter- ated, it seemed. The newspapers contained detailed de- scriptions of the lost man. A wandering man was found in Arkansas—the usual Ar- kansas wild man of the woods—but he was not identified as Bradley by the searching party from El Dorado that treed the crazy man near Bentonville. Another wild man turned up in Arizona. The county com- missioners of Butler county sent Mrs. Brad- ley down there with the sheriff, but the trip was useless. Every little while photo- &gTaphs of some strange man would appear at El Dorado to be identified as Bradley, but none of them tallied. As the months wore by into years the matter was dropped and Bradley was-given up for dead. His estate was probated, and, though he held thousands of dollars in trust for others, every cent was accounted for, and no one suffered the loss of a penny. His son and daughter and his wife mourned him as dead. And as such the community ac- cepted him. As such he was to his former life after he left the bridge on the Walnut. From that moment he began another ex- istence. He went to Parsons, where he be- gan life anew as a farm hand; he was then a man of nearly sixty years, but manual labor, though he had not been used to it for twelve years, did not discourage him. He did not breathe of his identity, of his secial position and his political influence in Butler county, but persisted in his new life. He read the story of his 6wn disap- pearance, of the search for him, of the mis- takes of his friends, of the grief of his wife and children, and was silent. A few mo- ments before he died he revealed himself to his new-found friends. But he did not explain his departure; that was his secret, and, being always a silent man, with it unspoken. bleak little graveyard on the wind-swept hill overlooking the little town where his success tn life was attained, and where the people who knew him wonder and surmise and gossip about the cause of the strange deed which marked his latter days. ———_+ e+ Bank Note Microbes. From Annales d"Hyztene Publique. Two Havanese bactertologists, Drs. Acos- ta and Grande-Rosst, conceived the idea, surely an original one, of studying the mi- crobes of bank notes. They have published the result of their researches on the notes of the Spanish Bank of Havana. They have proved, in the first place, that the weight of these notes increases in the course of their circulation, by reason of the addition | of foreign matter. At the end of a certain time the bacteriological analysis demon- strated a considerable increase in the num- ber of microbes; in two cases this num rose to more than 19,000. The physicians discovered speciallly the presence of a sep- tic bacillus, which rapidly kills animais in- ccuiated with it; this, to speak properly, is the specific microbe of the bank note, a! Talamon thinks that the name bacillus septicus aureus could be justly given to it. Messrs. Acosta and Grande-Rossi have, besides, recognized distinctly in the bank notes examined by them eight pathogenic species, among which were the bactllus of tuberculosis, that of diphtheria, and the streptococcus of erysipelas. The two bac- teriologists do not say what denominations of the notes they experimented with. It may be supposed, however, that they did hot use notes of 1,000 of even 10) francs. If the notes were of that size, it would be dif- ficult to verify their experiments in all lab- oratories, the means of which In general do Not permit of such prodigality. What use can the Havanese make of their bank notes that they become such receptacles of mi- erebes? Messrs. Acosta and Grande-Rossi declare that the children of Havana are ccustomed to carry bank notes in their mouths. It is easy to believe that the adults carry them elsewhere. An explanation of the recent secret mect- ing of Reading stock and bondholders at the Windsor Hotel in New York has been offered by Lawyer Isaac L. Rice. He said he had presented a complaint to the meet- Ing containing charges against the re- ivers of the railroad, and that there was decision that !t should be pre- the United States circuit court.on stion for their removal ment ts alleged, and the charge Is made that profitable business ts diverted to other rouds in which Re IS are inter- ested, and that afoot to put Reading into the latest coal deal. Other hollers of Reading securities are to be asket to participate in the proposed legal action. ——______. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1898—TWELVE PAGES. EXPERT TESTIMONY On Storms Given by Weather Bureau Officials Yesterday. In the case of Miss Ida White against Wm. G. Metzerott & Co. and others to re- cover damages to the amount of £25,000 for injuries received by her in the falling of the walls of the Metzerott Music Hall on the | 234 of November, 1891, Prof. Abbe of the weather bureau took the stand after The Star’s report of the case closed yesterday afternoon, and testified as to the force of the wind on the day of the accident. The storm, he declared, was in suddenness and violence the most severe in his personal ex- perience of twenty-three years in the weather bureau. ‘The average force of the | wind that day was fifty-four miles an hour, | but from 12:32 to 12:3 that afternoon (the time of the accident) the wind biew at the rate of sixty miles an hour. He saw the storm for ten minutes before it reached the city, and he could best describe it as a gust of wind. A cyclone was a spiral motion of the wind, and a hurricane was the severest central portion of the cyclone. There was nothing so unaccountable as a wind storm, and destruction done by one was not infre- quently done in spots. To Mr. Worthington Prof. Abbe stated that a wind striking right angle walls would be deflected and the weaker wall would give way, and, of course, at the weakest point, generally the center of the — unable to withstand the force of the Ww. Clerk Albert J. Hefiry of the weather bu- reau also testified as to the force of the storm on the day of the accident, and Building Inspector Entwisle testitied as to @ modification of the original plans of the hall so as to allow larger exits. He had not inspected the construction of the buildin, that duty having been given to one of his assistants. AUCTION SALES. ___THIY AFTERNOON.
