Owens; clerk—Miss Annie Owens. | On Thi the 26th instant, the ladies of the Neelsville Presbyterian Church will hold a festival of a social and intellectual character, the principal attraction being a lecture at 7:30 p. m. by Rev. H. C. Alex- ander of Washington, on a subject entitled: “A man of the twentieth century.” Refresh- ments will be served in tents on the church lawn. Proceeds for the benefit of the | church. Thomas Kenney, a well-known colored man of this town, while engaged in a fight | with another man at Petersburg a few days ago, was seriously injured by being stabbed with a knife. During the recent heavy storm the barn of Mr. Wm. Jones, about two miles west of this place, was blown down. About 350 bushels of wheat In a pen and a} Jarge rick of straw, the property of Mr. Wm. B. Vinson, residing near Darnestown, were ¢estroyed by fire on Tuesday night last. ‘che fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Mr. Robert Wilson of Bethesda and Miss Lelia E. Burriss were married on Wednes- @ay, at the residence of the bride's parents in Potomac district. Mr. Warren R. Choate and mother and Misses Catharine and Eliza Choate of this Place have gone to the world’s fair. Rev. L. L. Lioyd of the M. E. Church South will commence a protracted meeting at Emory on Sunday next, which will be continued during the following week. ‘The season for bird shooting, under the state law, will commence in this county on the Ist of November. Birds are reported as Wearce in this section. A gray eagle, measuring 7 feet 2 inches from tip to tip of wings, was Killed a few days ago on the farm of Richard H. Griffith, near Unity, this county. Mr. Wm. T. Lewis of Darnestown left here on Tuesday for the world’s fair at Chicago. 8. A.M. —_—_——_—_ TAKOMA PARK. The regular meeting of Takoma Lodge, No. 24, I. O. O. F., was held in Odd Fellows’ Hall last evening. In consequence of the serious illness of Mr. Harris of this lodge the visitation of and banquet to the grand lodge was postponed until November 23. A large representation of members were pres- ent with several visitors from neighboring lodges. Speeches were made by Messrs. Deiffert of Columbia and G. H. McDade of Central Lodge, Washington,also Noble Grand J. B. Johnston and Queen of the recently organized Brookland, District of Columbia, Lodge, and A. T. Keene of Brightwood. ‘The flag drill performance which is to oc- cur November 3, in the chapel, promises to be well patronized, the demand for tickets exceeding the supply. The rehearsals have been increased from two to three per week, and the contest for the gold medal promises to be a close one. The dance given at Odd Fellows’ Hall Thursday evening attracted a large number of Washington people. Those from this vicinity were: Misses Esther Danforth, Bennett, Winter and Jackson, with Messrs. Cc. C. Lamond, C. F. Page and F. Parkins. At a mass meeting of residents of the gection in this neighborhood heretofore known as “Texas,” a resolution was passed changing the name to “Chilium,” the tract being a portion of the land formerly be- longing to “Chillum Castle Mano! A number of Takomaites were present at the Christian Endeavor choir organization at the church, corner 6th and O streets, on Monday evening. Mr. C. M. Heaton, jr., expects to leave Saturday for a week in Chicago. Mr. Y. Pike of North Takoma has remov- ed with his family to Washington for the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin, who, with their family, have summered at Hotel Tako- ima, will occupy Mr. Pike's Takoma home during the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Angus Lamond have had ho a three weeks with friends in Mrs. M. Cady Becker returned Tuesday from a five weeks’ visit to relatives in Wilkesbarre, Pa., and Bear Creek, where she has been delightfully entertained and much benefited. Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Friebus, jr., are locat- ed at Maj. D. G. Purman’s in North Ta- koma while their house is being complet- ed, which latter is now in the hands of the a eerie irs. Jno. Finch is nding a week in Chicago. = Mrs. Robt. Brown returned Wednesday from Mt. Carroll, Ill, where she has been spending the month that has intervened since her visit to the fair. —_—-__. ANACOSTIA. There was an encounter last evening be- tween colored youths in that part of the District known as the flats. The trouble began in a trivial way and culminated in the fluent use of sticks and stones. Half a dozen boys participated, and a like num- ber of cuts and bruises resulted. Arrests ‘will follow. Miss Henrietta Wilkins gave a party last evening in honor of the return of her sis- ter, Miss Mildred, from the fair. Local so- elety turned out in force, and the largeness of the enjoyment was proportionate to the time. There was the customary use of au- tumn blossoms, and dispensation of ice team, cake and favors. It was told a reporter for The Star last evening by an official of the Baptist Church that the Second Baptist Church had as- signed, and that its patrons had returned to the fold of their early love. He said that at the last meeting of the Second Baptist Church half a dozen worshipers turned cat. It was not possible for the reporter to get a Second Baptist with which to verify this statement. It will be remembered that somewhat over a year ago a convulsion among the local Baptists shook the church in twain. Unchristian feeling was mani- fested, and it is said that police interference was threatened. Things gradually tamed down, and the seceders fitted up a neat lit- te place of worship in Masonic Hall. The €orgregation wes always small. Mrs. Jane Mason,colored,was injured Wed- pesday evening by the overturning of a Kerosene lamp. Aid was rendered by Doc- tor Francis Haines, and the sufferer is improving. Miss Annie Smith has returned. Dr. H. V. Pyles is ili. Mrs. Rev. J. T. Williams is visiting in Baltimore. Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Church returned from Oneonta, N. Y., on Wednesday. Mrs. Church fs still quite sick, but improving. Mrs. Henry R. Bowie, democratic candidate for the state senate, has in an open letter declined Mr. Ralston’s chal- lerge to meet him in debate, and given various reasons for his refusal, and the lat- ter has accepted it as challenge to a writ- ten debate and replied to some length in an open letter in which he presents a number of arguments from a single tax standpoint.
