8 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTO D. C, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER ‘18, 1893—TEN PAGES. IN MEMORY OF LINCOLN. The Building in Which He Died Thrown Open to the Public, & Valuable Collection of Relies by the Memorial Association — Many Eloqvent Speeches Made. ‘The fruits of the labors of the recently srganized Memorial Association of the Dis- trict of Columbia are already beginning to sppear in the movement that has been made for the preservation of a spot that should be ef the utmost interest to every American ¢itizen—the house in which President Lin- coin died after he was removed from the theater in which that shocking tragedy oc- curred. For years the house has been allowed to fun to seed, but now the local society, which has for its object the care and suita- bie marking of places in this city that are ef historic interest, has taken it in charge. ‘One of the first things that they started to @o was to secure this old house on lth street opposite the old Ford's Theater. They have succeeded in leasing the property for the term of one year, with the option of purchase, and the expectation is that Con- ress will see the eminent propriety of pur- chasing the place for a permanent memorial to the great Ulinois statesman and mar- tyred President. An Interesting Collection. In their efforts in the line of making the Bouse an interesting memorial of an inter- *sting man, the association had one pecu- Barly good stroke of luck. This was nothing more nor less than getting possession of a large and wonderfully complete collection of felics and mementoes of Mr. Lincoln, ex- tending through all the periods of his life. ‘This collection was described in last Satur- @ay’s Star. The way the association came to it, however, is an interesting matter. puting of It together was the work of More than thirty years on the part of a man who has devoted an immense amount of time and care to the labor. For years he occupied the old homestead in Springfield where Mr. Lincoln lived when he was made President. The man was Col. O. H. Oldroyd and he kept this collection in the old house ‘where it was always open to the public, and for five years every one was given a chance to inspect It. It was at his suggestion that the old house was presented to the state of Tiiinois by Col. Robert T. Lincoln, and at is suggestion he was placed in the house | as custodian. The agreement was that he would leave this large and valuable collec- tion of his to the state upon his death, upon the condition that up to that time the state ‘would insure him a reasonable salary, suffi- cient for his needs. This arrangement con- tinued fdr a period of about five years, but at the end of that time Gov. Altgeld, for political reasons, removed him from his ‘posi- tion and Col. Oldroyd took his collection “Hearing f this state of things, the M of state of the Me- mortal Association at once communicated with Col. Oldroyd and asked him not to consider any other offers until they had had @ chance to make some arrangement with Bim. The result of it all will be that the association will probably be able to get pos- session of the collection aud keep in the house in which Lincoln died, the whole to make a most valuable exhibit and one that ‘would tell more than anything else could of the simple and pure life of a great man, from the cradle in which he lay as a babe down to the very articles that played a part fm the sad tragedy that brought his life to an untimely and unnecessary end. How the Relies Are Arranged. ‘There are upwards of three thousand differ- ent articies in the collection, varying from a Jock of hair from the head of Mrs. Lincoln, or a shaving from the cedar coffin in which ‘the President was burfed, to one of the iden- tical rails that was split by Mr. Lincoln's own hands. There are books of his life and ef the war. Photographs of the scenes in ‘which he played such a prominent part are yng about on the wall among newspaper euts from the ilustrated papers of the time that depict his publie life from the time when he first came prominently before the eyes of the country. There are photographs ‘of the hanging of Mrs. Surratt and the oth- er conspirators. It would be a difficult and tedious task to attempt to enumerate the relics that compose this unique collection. | ‘They are all arranged in a satisfactory man- ner about the rooms on the main floor of the house, No. 516 10th street. which, up to the present time, has had only a marble slab in the front wail to mark it out for the famous t that it Is. “Sinte-esting as all the relics are that Col. Oidroyd has brought together. it was left for this city to supply two relics of the ut- most value. Not long ago Dr. T. 8. Ham- Ha, one of the members of the Memo-iai Association, got track of these two articles ‘and finally’ succeeded in locating them in the basement of the Smithsonian. One was the chair in which Mr. Lincoln sat at the time he was shot. The other was the tall, now oid fashioned silk hat which he woze to the theater on that fatal night. The chair 's a large mahogany arm chair up- holstered in red damask and was undoubt- ediy a handsome piece of furniture in its day. On the back may now be seen a larze dark stain which shows where the blood of the President poured forth. These two articles, it seems, were deposited with the Smithsonian, for some reason or other, on the day after the shooting, presumably by members of the police force or of the mili- tazy. There were no papers of any de- posited with them, but at the same time there is no possible doubt of their authen- tieity. ‘Thrown Open to the Public. This memorial to Mr. Lincoln, house and collection, was thrown open to the public for the first time last night, and a number of invited guesis were present for the exer- ¢ises that ma-ked this important occasion. Amonz those who were present were the Vice President, Senator Cullom, Chief Jus tice Fuller, Commissioner Ross, ex-Commis sioner Douglass, Gen. and Mrs. Schofield, Gen. Wheeler. Dr. and Mrs. Hamitn, Mr. T. W. Noyes, Rev. Dr. J. Eliott.” Bishop Keane, rector of the Catholic University, Mr. Jere Wilson. Mr. S. P. Langley, Secre- tary of the Smithsonian Institute; M>. and Mrs. H. B. F. Mecfariand, Rev.’ Dr. Sun- deriand, Mr. J. W. Somers, Miss Strong and Mr. Chas. J. Bell ‘The exercises of the evening consisted for the most part of speeches. The meeting ¥as called to onfer by the Chief Justice in Bis capacity as presilent of the association. ‘He spoke for a few moments of the objects of the Memorial Association as being typ- {eal of the growth of feeling throughout the country regarding reverence for things historical. fie said that it was fitting that this work of p:eserving historfcal reiics should be most p-osecuted here In the eap- ftal of the nation. Justice Fuller then in- troduced Senater Cutlom, who knew Mr. Lincoln longer ard better than any other man now alive. Senator Cvllom spoke but feelincly of Mr. fact It seemei with this little collection of People sitting about in the parlors of this €urious old house, discussing the merits and Qualities of a man whe has now been dead @ome time, as though they were speaking ef one who had just passed away, and Whose death was a personal blow to each one. Tt was an Interesting and unusual evening. Senator Cullom’s Personal Reminis- cence: Senator Cullom said in the course of his Yemarks that nothing could possibly have Gained his consent to remain away on such £n oceasion. So of Mr. Lincoln, Ilinois had given him to America ard America had given him to the world and to the ages. It is proper that there should be here a memorial for the children of our land of one of the greatest men that ever lived. Bishop Keane's Tribute. Bishop Keane followed with a brief ad- | dress, in which he paid an eloquent tribute to the memory of Mr. Lincoln. He said | that partisanship is one of the menaces to our land and he thanked God that as an effset to such tendencies the memories of an Abraham Lincoln were to be pres2rved. He then went on to speak of the destrabil- ities of a country which has so ttle of a past, marking with a mack and a seal spots which like this should be so dear to the memory of all patriotic Americans. br. The resoiution was adopted by a rising vote. Prof. Joyce entertained the audience with patriotic airs and was given a vote of thanks by the club. The meeting was one of the most enthusiastic that has ever been held in that section of this district. Eureka Grange held an interesting meet- ing at its hall in Chillum e few nights ago. ‘The program consisted of singing by the Grange, reading from “Martin Chuzalewit” by the chaplain, and a debate on “Fall Work on Farms and Gardens” by Messrs. John Miller, Ager, Perkins and Row ‘The following delegates were chosen to rep- resent the Grange at the meeting of the Montgomery County Grange, which will be held at Barnesville on the 2th instant: Mr. and Mrs. James Enos Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Ager, Mr. and Mrs. John Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McChesney. A very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Jerome's Catholic Church at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, the contracting parties being Mr. Geo. E. Riley and Miss Rose Gallant of this village. The ceremany was performed by Rev. Father Russell and nup- tial mass was sung by the choir. Miss Edith Gallant, niece of the bride, played the wedding march and Miss Lillie Acker sang an offertory. The bride was becomingly attired in a steel blue broadcloth dress and carried a bouquet of La France roses. The altar was handsomely decorated with autumnal! flow- ers. Shortly after the ceremony the happy couple left for a brief visit to Baltimore, amid the congratulations of their many friends. ‘The democratic candidates have made ar- rangements to hold the following meeting: at the different places in this county: Hyde's store, Saturday, October 2, at 4 p- m.; Horse Head, Monday, October 23, at 3p. m., and Brandywine, ‘at 7:30 p.
