ABINGDON, Va., October 15, 189. While no place in the United States was has felt more keenly its baneful ante aS tie Wee: oft Watts: Tenyias sesee® Prospective town of Damascus, Promises to be a place of unusual import- ance. It is laid out, and somewhat built up, upon @ plateau with surrounding hills at the head of a beautiful valley at a point where meet the amber-tinted waters of two ‘tious mountain streams known as the urel and the ver Dam. These streams. effects. This is largely due to the fact that the industries concerned in the development of its weaith of mineral resources and its great number of manufacturing enterprises ‘were dependent, in a great degree, upon eastern and foreign capital. These in- veators were the first to foresee and feel the effects of the coming panic; consequently such investments were the first to be af- fected by the depression, but will doubtless be among the first to respond to the revival ef commercial conditions. Whilst, however, but with its coal, iron, cattle and tobacco im every ‘The people of this part of the state have much to be proud over in the fact that gambles of southwest Virginia coal and coke were awarded the highest premium at the world’s fair. This will doubtless be news, as the award has not yet been offi- cially promulgated, and an unpleasant sur- prise to many others concerned in coal in- terests. The particular specimen on which the award of coal was made was taken from the Kelley field at Big Stone Gap, Lee county, and was passed upon by Mr. Jno. B. The mine has been worked for several years, ‘and is one of the finest in location and most in output in the state. Coal in this locality was discovered some twelve or fourteen years ago by Gen. J. D. Imboden, a native of Augusta county, this state, who hes for many years been active tm locating and developing coal and tron de- posits, as weil as instrumental in attracting capital to this part of the one of the judges of award ment of mines and mining for in and ts now the page this coun’ ists to even to his oft-repeated rep- Tesentations of the new Eldorado, but after Succeeded in inducing company to seul in inducing @ company to send a upon his arrival at ‘the residence of the general, and after tak- ing © cursory review of the lofty hill and mountain around him, that belleved he come upon “a fool's er- rand,” judging frem surface indications é f 8, 5 z 1 ‘ i f however, he took off his hat to his host, asserting that he had never seen finer speci- mens or brighter prospects, and today been pronounced the finest in. the worl est 5 Since then there has sprung up a young with the factli- 8 ga i fF i : , 3 & fu Hu i have indefinite ideas of just of the state constitutes what southwest Virginia, often con- 7. by founding it with the valley of Virginia and West Virginia. Possibly no similar area in the United States is so rich in abundance, quailty and | variety of valuable mineral lands. The gov- | ernment requires the tests of the new | cruisers to be made, I have seen stated, | with coal from the ‘Pocahontas mines in ‘Tazewell county, which adjoins this—Wash- ington county. Washington County and Damascus. Washington county is one of the largest and most populous in the southwest, and has the honor of being the first place of any kind named for the father of his coun- | try, at which time it embraced a large part of Virginia and a portion of Tennessee, and was known as West Augusta—a title well known in the history of the American rev- elution. It was from West Augusta that Gen. Wm. Campbell, who married a sister of Patrick Henry, recruited and marched his dauntless but badly equipped troops to Kings mountain, and gained a victory that ee : ites an Hl largely decided the fortunes of the contest | for liberty and independence. Washington county is beited from the North Carolina | Tine on the east to that of Kentucky on the ‘west by a succession of ridges and valleys, through which three rivers wind their way southwestward—the north, middle and south forks of the Holston, which form the head waters of the Tennessee. All the smaller streams flow at right angles with these larger ones, and it is a remarkable | fact, often noted by travelers, that not | one em flows along the smaller valleys SS Sa wih the Tidee,, but deo straight across them, having cut or worn gaps, apparently, for themselves at some time in the far past. ‘At the southeastern corner of the county ts the towering peak known as White Top, ‘with their feeders, toppling over great boul- ders and precipices ay they tumble through the coves and mountain nooks, could fur- nish sufficient water and power to run ozens of mills and furnaces. Abingdon and Its Colleges. As I said in my former letter, Abingdon fs an educational town. It has three col- leges and an academy in addition to its public and several private schools. The foremost of these is Martha Washington College, under the auspices of the Hoiston Conference of the M. B. Church South, and fs in a highly flourishing condition. The building is, and was, before a number of additions to meet increasing demands were made, an attractive one, baving been built by and used as @ homestead of the Preston family, the head of which was Gen. Francis Preston of revolutionary history, and among its welcomed habitues were the Hamptons, McDowels, Breckinridges and others whose family names are weil known to the present generation. Gen. Wade Hampton of ‘South Carolina married into as @ McDowell and a Breck- I Thos. L. Preston, one of the sens, now a resident of Charlottesville, own- ed and resided in the old historic home- stead at the time of its disposal to the Methodists, just prior to the late war. for use as a college, and was even to that date one of the most widely known of the ho pitable social and literary rendezvous in the flush times of Virginia. It is a stately, imposing building, surrounded by many acres studded with magnificent trees and adorned with shrubbery and flowers. ‘The several modern additions made to the old building, I am sorry to say, detract rather than ada to the grandeur of the old style, with its lerge windows with small panes, spacious chambers, wide halls, porticoe: and verandas. John B. Floyd, governor of Virginia and afterward Secretary of Wer under Buchan- an, married one of the daughters and lived in the stately mansion adjoining and to the east. which was built by one of the sous, John 8. Preston of South Carolina, noted in bis time for his brillfant oratorical accom- lishments. The Floyd house was purchased the Presbyterians shortly after the late war and is now the Stonewall Jackson In- stitute, and is a warm rival in patronage and progressiveness as a female college to its neighbor. ‘The Catholics also have a f male college, known as the Academy of th Visitation, B. V. M. It is not in so flour- ishing @ condition as the others. their fol- lowing not being so numerous in this sec tion, but it is a fine school and has a wide reputation. Next to this ts the Abingdon Academy, a training school for boys and young men for colleges. Within a few miles of Abingdon, at Emory, is Emory and Henry Colleze, one of the leading male colleges in the couth. admittedly nex? to the University of Virginia in ts curriculum. ‘The public school system of the state is a fine and lfberal one. both for white and colored pupils. The public school building of Abingdon {s an unusually commodious and fine one for a town of its size, and the attendance full. notwithstanding the nu- merous other school facilities of the place. A Glimpse at Politics. The political eld here, and from what 1 can learn in the greater portion of the state, is in a badly shaken up condition. ‘There is no republican ticket as yet in this county for legislative honors. The ticket nominated by the democratic county con- vention for some reason appears to be un- popular, and several democratic candidates are out independently, while the populists are in the race. to ‘say nothing of the chronic all-around fellows who up at every electio: with a consuming desire to save the country from ruin. Col. O’Ferrall will carry this county, and the southwest, as for that, for governor, but there is no mis- take about the populist energy that ts being shown here, as elsewhere. But southwest Virginia is a democratic stronghold, not- withstanding the fact that {t gets ripped up occasionally by such passing political whirligigs as the “greenback” and “read- juster” crazes. It is said that Dr. Franklin Temarked after he had traveled through the state in its early settlement, that he saw little else than “fine scenery, hors, dogs, fleas and democrats.” and it may be observed now that the latter evidently came to grow up with the country and became indigenous to the soll. The silver question, while attracting widespread interest, Is not entering into the campaign to a very great extent, in consequence of more direct local issues, but as far as I can judge sentiment favors the repeal bill, though many of its friends want stlver as subsidiary and auxil- lary to gold. F. H. a ACCURACY MOST IMPORTANT. Editor Dana Spenks of the Education of a Journalist. Charles A. Dana, editor of the New York Sun, addressed the students of Union Col- lege, Schenectady, N. Y., on Friday last on “The Press and Journalism." Mr. Dana does not believe in schools of journalism. A first-class education he believed to be the best basis for a newspaper man’s ca- reer. He went on: “There fs no question that accuracy, the faculty of seeing a thing as it is, is one of the first and most precious ends of good education. Next to that I would put the ability to know how and where most prompUy to look for what you don’t know and what you want to know. Thirdly, I would put Dr. Walker's great object, ‘being able to tell what you know, and to tell it accurately, precisely, without exaggeration, without prejudice, the fact just as it is, whether it be a report of a base ball game, or of a sermon, or of a lecture on electricity, whatever it may be, to get the thing exactly as {t is. The man who can do this is a very weil educated man. Further on he sald: “Now let us turn to the practice of the profession. In a great newspaper office about sixty out of a hun- | dred writers will be reporters. That is one of the most important branches of the profession, and it is paid very liberally. That is one of the first things, when a young man comes for employment and you take him on and give him a chance, that he 1s set to do. That will bring into action all his culture and good judgment. If he reports a fire, he must see the most import- ant things about it, the chief interest in- volved, who has met with the greatest loss, has any Individual perished, how did it oc- ur, the interesting circumstances, and be able to write it out.” — DE ORO IN THE LEAD. ‘The International Pool Contest With Roberts, The international pool contest between John Roberts, champion of Great Britain, at pyramid pool, and Alfred De Oro, cham- pion of the world, at continuous pool, for a stake of $2,000, opened at Madison Square Concert Hall in New York last night. The contest is for 1,000 voints up, six nights’ during five nights, with 20 points on the |final night. On the American table the pockets are 41-2 inch corner, 4 3-4 inch si with 2 5-16 inch ball, and on the English table 3 5-8 pockets and 2 1-8 balls. ‘The score for last night was De Oro, 152; Roberts, 132. Score by frames: Roberts, 8, 11, § 7, 1, 0, 5, 13, 12, 3 7, 12, 1, 2, 4 13, $12. De Oro, 7, 4, 7, 8, 4, 15, 10, 2, 3, 12, 8 3, 14, 12, Li, 7, 2, 7, 6-152. — Mary Washington's Monument.
