Today The prints a communication from Mr. Lafayette C. Loomis, who localizes the At- water argument and with facts that should be easily understood by even the waytaring man makes plain the waste of which so many ‘people are unaware. He compares reconstructive value of ordinary ar- of food, their values in the produc- energy and warmth and their eco- value. Each of these is worthy of careful study and if those benefit they are intended will make good use of the advice tendered the time and money spent in reaching the unanswerable conclusions will not have been thrown away. Mr. Loomis takes corn meal as the variety of food product on which to base comparison, and from it he works out the percentage of nutri- tive value contained in other common foods. With corn meal at 100, sugar and butter are both elphers, pork, ham and bacon are fated at 2, oysters at 12, tenderloin steak at 1% mutton at 15, and eggs at the same fig- Ff jit i constructive value do not give what may be termed an average value, for while sugar | point, the figures presented by Mr. Loomis— in which he shows the amount of money that must be expended to obtain an equal amount of nutrition from each of the ar- ticles in his comprehensive catalogue—are Worthy of careful study. Oysters to the Value of $3.10 are on even nutritive terms with 3 cents worth of corn meal, 33 cents worth of wheat flour, 4 cents worth of oat meal, 70 cents worth of potatoes, and so on up the rising scale of cheese, round steak, pork, ham, bacon, sugar, milk, sirloin steak, eggs, mutton and tenderloin. It is true that many of the more expensive foods have been and will continue to be consumed because they appeal to the gastronomic tastes which are so frequently found in the possession of those who incomes are meager, but those whose means are limited will surely be unfair to themselves if they do not take advantage of the information which Mr. Loomis spreads abroad for their benefit. There are other considerations than those which have their origin in an expensive palate, and in acquiring and pre- Paring for publication the statements to which reference has been made Mr. Loomis has placed the comparatively poor of this city under obligations that are not likely to be soon liquidated. —__+ +s ____ ‘The reading public was surprised when Harper's Weekly defended the Van Alen @ppointment on the ground that the re- public is in the habit of appointing to diplo- matic positions untried men on partisan considerations, that this appointment is no worse than hundreds of others that excited no comment, and that “whatever odium attaches to the selection rests on the system and not on the President.” Harper’s Weekly has not been expected by its readers to print feeble excuses for un- worthy appointments, absolving a Presi- dent from responsibility for yielding to bad political habits instead of resisting and overcoming them, any more than President Cleveland has been expected by the people to wallow in partisan mire because some other Presidents have done so. Both the Van Alen appointment and"Harper’s Week- ly’s defense of it were surprises, but the periodical has now corrected its own blunder. In its current issue it withdraws from the uncongenial position of a de- fender of this appointment, and repudiates completely its argument that the Presi- Gent's action is defensible because it is no worse than some other actions by some other men equally indefensible. It con- cludes with some severity: if we take ever so favorable a Mr. Cleveland’r motives we are compelled to say that his action in this instance has dealt a blow to his moral he has earned the to the important property of the American peo- le, and the value of that property has this one in a lamenta- ble manner been put in Jeopardy.’ It is much to be desired that the dent might follow the example of Harper's Weekly and correct his blunder. A man who, far from having rendered his coun- try public service, Mves for most of the time abroad and despises things Ameri- can, should never be appointed to import- ant public office, on account of a cam- paign fund contribution suspected to have been made simply with office in view. —__ ~eo2 —__ England declares that she will make another trial for the America’s cup: This ‘Turnishes new embarrassment for the Anglo-maniac, who does not know whether, since the Vigilant’s success, it would not be the proper thing to think that yacht racing doesn’t amount to much anyhow. pumanciemanes os The Senate has mended the old copy ook saw, so as to make it read: “The pen 1s mightier than the sword, but the mouth ts mightier than either.” —_—___+e2+—____ The druggists in convention at Detrott have not seen fit to make any remarks as to the alleged prospect of gold being a @rug on the market. —_+2+___. It is alleged that the Senate preferred ad- fournment to sitting up any longer by ‘Washington gas light. —_+ 2 For once the Senators, when they got home, had a good excuse to give for staying out so late. ——_ +++ -—__.
