4 —S THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. CROSBY 8. NOYES. -Editor. THE EVENING STAR bas « regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any other paper in the city. As a local NEWS paper and Ad- Vertising Medium it has no competitor. SS If Lineman Joseph Ebert gets all the electricity out of his system and fully re- covers from the injuries he received while suspended for a terrible half hour in s mesh of stinging and burning wires last Bight he may have some satisfaction in knowing that he did not suffer in vain. ‘The accident and the fire at the Corcoran Ebert's misadventure draw public atten- ity of permitting a net- work of dangerous wires to hang over the buildings. | proved, there is little it is shown that a fire may be caused or death may be inflicted by wires maybe miles away. Washington has by good luck escaped serious disaster from these causes, but the occurrences of last night show that such immunity has been due to good luck only, and admonish those in authority of the fearful responsibility they will have to accept if they leave life and property to be constantly imperiled by permitting overhead wires to exist. Much that ts to be commended has already been done in this city towards removing the danger, but evidently much remains to be done. What has been accomplished has been due in part to a sentiment against disfiguring the streets of the city with unsightly poles and wires. The warning now given that the wires are perilous as well as ugly, it is hoped, will be sufficient to induce a speely completion of the good work. It ts a rea- sonable public sentiment that demands the removal of aerial wires, and protests for THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. 3. ©, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14. 1893. loyalty has been tried on the battle field would be among the first to move toward meting out swift punishment to an assassin of a President or public official or to a sneaking coward who would propose such a thing to others. There is a danger, how- ever, that some crazy impulse to murder in the weak mind of some conceited crank like Guiteau might be stimulated into ac- tion by such utterances. It is hoped the authorities will find ample law to deal so severely with the case that the memory cf it will serve as a wholesome check on ary blatherskites and imbeciles who might here- after desire to figure on paper as ‘terrible assassins. ——__+++___—_. - Through a misunderstanding of its mo- tives, the Midnight Band of Mercy has be- come the object of a great and hostile out- ery in the regions of New York infested by cats. A person rising in the morning to find the streets strewn with the dead bodies of cats,or to discover two or three feline ca~ davers in his back yard is not in a humor to sympathize with the great movement having for its object the amelioration of the city cat. The most practical form of amelioration for sickly and suffering cats 1s death, and the agents of the Midnight Band bring about the death of such cats by the use of chloroform. A counter agitation, however, has been started, which may re- sult in exterminating the midnight band. ‘The driving of sheep through the Interior Department building is the latest sugges- tion as to a means of getting rid of the fleas that have located there. It is a curious sort of remedy, but it seems to be theoretically sound. If it can be demonstrated that these insects have such a fondness for mutton that they will desert the habitations of human beings to gratify it, no considera- tions of compassion for the sheep will have any weight. —_+e+_____ Not very long ago the farmers in this part of the country were complaining of the scarcity of rain.
