INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO BRIDGES ON THE DANUBE, AT BUDAPEST. According to the law XIV of 1803 bridge of a total length of 312 meters and another of 332 meters will be executed on the Danube at Buda- it. FAD international competition for plane ant) pro- Jects ts opened herewith for these two bridges. ‘The competitors might participate in this com- petition with elther one project or two for both bridges. Without regarding to which bridge it refers a prize of 30,000 crowns (thirty thousand) (cea 1,2508 $6,080) will be rewarded to the best project, such having an abosolute value; and a prize of 20,000 (twenty thousand) crowns (ces 830£—$4,050) will be awarded to the second best project. If the best project solved the question of connecting the two banks at the Eskuter with one opening, so that it answers the stipulations contained in the conditions, this project will recelve a special premium of 10,000 (ten thousand) crowns (cea 420£—$2,030), besides the allotted first prize. ‘The royal Hungarian minister of commerce re- serves to bimself the right of buying any of the not rewarded projects for 5.000 (five thousand) crowns (cea 210£—$1,015). If one of the winners should be commisioned to execute the work upon the basis of his tender the prize allotted wil! not be paid. ‘The projects provided with device and sealed letter containing the device are to be presented to the menager of the bureaux of the Hungarian royal mlniatry of commerce (Budapest, Lanczhid, lulcza) latest the 31 Jaunary, 1804, toward receipt. ‘The projects presented until bis term will be ex- amined by an appointed commission of experts, and the prizes shall be awarded on the basis of thelr opinion. ‘The projects recetved within the fixed term will be exposed to public view during two weeks. ‘The rewarded and eventually bought projects pass into the possession of the Hungarian govern- ment, which will dispose freely of them. ‘The terms to which the surroundings of the bridgés, and the plans and longitudinal section of every bridge are subjoined can be obtained at every consulate general of Austria-Hungary. ‘The experimental borings are still pending, thus the profile drawings, showing the results, can be communicated later on and can be obtained by the competitors at the latest on the 30 September, 1803, at the above-mentioned places. That Have Been Side-Trackea f Those of Later Date. It is learned at the pension bureau that since the passage of the act of March 27, 1890, claims for pension under that act have ‘been given unfair advantage in the matter of adjudication over claims under prior acts, and where disability of service origin are alleged. It is said that in consequence of this there are now 200,000 cases that have been side-tracked for four years. In tak- ing down an old file case it was discovered that it contained 2,000 completed cases, a: yet, in consequence of the bureau being taken up with the adjudication of June 27, 1890, cases, no action had been taken. To correct this evil Commissioner Lochren has directed that chiefs of division shall make a thorough search of the files of the old cases, and where they are found to be com- pleted to take prompt action, and if in- complete to make the necessary calls for additional proof. °- Barned on a Trolley Pole. Philip Pearson, a lineman employed to string trolley wires for the Brooklyn City Railroad Company, was badly burned and shocked at the top of a pole at Kent ave- hue and South 9th street, Williamsburg, Saturday morning. The Franklin avenue trolley line of the Brooklyn City and Newtown Railroad Company turns out of South 9th street into Kent avenue and guide wires are strung from the trolley wire to posts at the curb of the sidewalk. Both the Brook- lyn city road and this company are to use the same trolley wire north of South 9th street. Pearson and Charles Kraus, another line- man, were putting in connecting wires and had climbed a pole supporting guide wires that are not supposed to be charged. Pear- son leaned against a guide wire. He had stuck a pair of iron pliers in his belt and these touched the wire. He groaned heav- ily, and fell limp over the wire. Kraus pull- ed him off and received a severe shock, but clung to Pearson and called for help ‘Two linemen climbed the pole and helpet Kraus other Mngmen ran for ladders. Seven men carried Pearson down the ladder. He was taken to the office of a sugar refinery op- posite and was treated by Ambulance Sur- weon McCleary, who took him to the Fast_ ern District Hospital. It was discovered that a hole had been burned into the flesh Just under the heart. The electric current had discolored the skin, making a black belt around the body, beginning and ending at the hole in the side. Potomac river freights are running low. The shipping season, so far as local stuff 4s concerned, is drawing to a close. It has not been an especially profitable summer with the regular lMne boats, but sul some money has been made. Profits have been slim because of the increase! number of craft. It is not possible to say which line has | made the cash. Each boat has its cliental, which sticks to it through sunshine and storm. Many of the old patrons refused to de oax. ed away from their favorite by new carpets and fresh gilding. If the steamboat com- panies would permit the public to inspect the books and read the manifests some in- teresting facts would be brought to light. Each boat upon landing claims, and every body will corroborate everybody else, @hat she swept the river of freight, and at many of the landings could not get more on board. The reason always given how the oth- er boat manages to get any ctuff is that we did not havé suffictent carrying ca- pacity to take on any m@e. These siate- ments are always made soberly.
