LETTER WRITING ART. Bules and Courtesies in Oorrespond- ence Sadly Neglected. A LETTER OF INTRODUCTION. The Use of Slang in the Upper Circles. — THE COLLECTING MANIA. _—— girls from the bondage of the unbecoming, slang will soon shrink into obscurity. ‘The modern school girl is not dressed in the sorry costumes and broad, heavy soles which were provided for her mother’s school outfit. Her frocks are as short, perhaps, as those of the last generation, but they give glimpses of lace petticoats and dear little varnished shoes, or ties of soft Russia leather or delicate chamols. In the seclusion of the dormitories she does not forget to be bewitchinuly attired, and a tea jacket of shot blue and white silk worn over a petticoat of Valenciennes is one of her beauteous neglizes. Instead of walking out in solemn two and two manner, she now takes lier exercise in tennis, which gives opportunity for a sear- let silk shirt, a skirt of brown checked tweed and a jaunty little cap with a scar- let feather. Or, she pulls up the river in a costume development of blue ilk shirt and white coat, while some of her classmates elsewhere “are curving, sweeping, bend- ing, kicking—in short, dancing—in soft drooping draperies of lemon und or- ange color. Or, still another may be walk- ing In the grounds, enanaring a professor in the meshes of her pink feather hoa. Cer- tainly, the lines of the fn-de-siecle school | FRESHNESS OF THE FAIR. As the summer goes on the aspect of this reat fair changes in many particulars. Unfinished exhibits of early June have been completed, and become old stories in Au- gust; the big cold storage building with its conspicuous tower is laid low by fire, and on the Plaisance especially the visitor misses a number of things which were to be seen a few weeks or days ago, but Correspondence of The Bvening Star.
