The fact of the matter was that the visi- tors hit the ball hard in the fifth inning and batted out five runs. There were sev- eral occasions when it seemed as though sacrificing would have been better than hitting the ball hard, but that oceasion was not in the seventh when Farrell was on third and no one out. Then with the in- field in close the play was certainly to hit hard. Baldwin was equal to the occasion and two batsmen filed out and the other made an infield hit on which Farrell was run down. Some critisism was made of Sullivan in this inning for detaining Farrell on third when he had made a home run hit. The play was all right and nine times aut of ten would have worked advantageously. In fact Anson, Ward, Comiskey and the best base ball captaing do it frequently. That three men should come to the bat and none of them succeed in hitting safely was hardly to be expected. Baldwin was effective just when It was necessary. What ‘brilliant playing there was the home players did. Hoy caught a Ay hac! of short field after a hard run, which wa: od for two runs had it been missed. tricker was as active as a cat, while the outfield caught seven files. Ward did some admirable base running, and his activity {spire his “men to take every chance. re: ‘WASHINGTON, RHO A. an Hos. of ......2 0 8 O oo Wend) 8 23 $4 ioe. 2 o OBourkn i0 2 1 0 20 Yarkin, tb..0 0 6 8 a0 Suftiven.ss 1 12 1 2% Hadiora, r-2 2 1 0 50 Stricker. 2..0 1 4 8 5 Me oot 30 i024 12 2 Earned runs—Washington, 4. Danny Richardson, the popular second baseman of the Brooklyn Club, has issued his ultimatum. He told a New York Sun reporter yesterday that he would never play another game for the Brooklyn Club unless President C. H, Byrne retracted the state- ment that he had violated the club's rules by drinking and refusing to play ball. I mean what I say,” said Danny. “President Byrne has spread a malicious falsehood about me, and it has hurt me with my friends and the patrons of the game. He charged me with drinking and carousing, and tried to lay the onus of the team’s poor work in the west upon my shoulders. I deny positively that I have been lushing. I have taken a glass of beer once ina while, and there is not a member of the Brookiyn team that hasn't, but I have not been in a state unfit to play ball, and I defy Mr. Byrne to prove his statements. “I have been sick and I have a doctor's certificate to that effect, but Byrne wouldn't Tecognize it. The club would have been doing perfectly right in laying me off for the reason that I was unabie to play on ac- count of sickness, but it did wrong in spreading the falsehood that I had been drinking. Foutz told me last Saturday night that I was on the pay roll again, and ordered me to go to Philadelphia with the team on Monday. On Sunday I received telegrams from my home in Elmira, N. ¥., one from a friend and another from my business partner, asking me if the reports about my alleged drunken behavior were true. It so angered me to think that the les had reached my own home, where I have business interests and family rela- tions, that I decided then and there that I wouldn't play another game of ball for the Brooklyn Club unless Byrne should retract his false statements and set me right be- fore the public and my friends, Base Ball Notes. Two victories over Baltimore send the Orioles down nearer us. It is hinted that Richardson may resurn to New York. Wise turned a sure foul bunt into a fair ball yesterday by touching it and Davis scored in consequence. Larkin acknowledges being caught four feet off the base by Connor. To many he looked safe. A New Scheme In the South. The directors of the Southern League have decided to divide the Southern League into eastern and western divisions, and will Play out the balance of the season in this y. Winning clubs of each division will play off, winner to play winner of first naif Pennant. It is considered a good step and the salvation of base ball in the south. OARSMEN AT BALTIMORE.
