Improvements to Be Asked For—Father Gil- lespie Ta‘ks on Grade Crossings—The Proposed Ten-Million Loan. There was a large and interesting meet- ing of the Northeast Washington Citizens’ Association last evening in Lipp's Hall, corner of Iith and H streets northeast. In calling the meeting to order President Friz- zell congratulated the association upon what it had accomplished since the last meeting with reference to the high fence at the Delaware avenue and H street rail- road crossing and also the fence inclosing the railroad tracks. He referred to the order of the commissioners printed in The Star some days ago. ‘The principal business before the associa- the report of the street commit- tee: This committee made a report explain ing the condition and needs of the vartous streets and recommending the improvement of streets in the order following. Ninth street from K street to Florida ave- nue, graded and regulated. Second street from K ‘street to Florida avenue, graded and regulated. Third street from H street to Florida ave- nue, graded and regulated. Mr. Boyer moved to amend the report by inserting F street from 3d street to Mary- land avenue. Upon this amendment there was a lively discussion in which a number of persons participated. The proposed amendment was rejected and the report as above print- ed was adopted, the committee being In- structed to present the report to the Dis- trict Commissioners. Father Gillespie on Grade Crossings. Rev. Father Gillespie, pastor of St. Aloy- sius Church and president of Gonzaga Col- lege, was present and his name was signed tg the constitution, making him a member of the association. President Frizzell in- troduced Father Gillespie to the meeting, FazINs fhe, was deeply interested in the af- fairs of the assoc tion, and that he was constitu: ¥ opposed 'to grade crossings. Father Gillespie then addressed the meet- ing, saying that the same causes which had attracted other members of the association to the meetings had attracted him. “I am, of course, interested in real estate and improvement,” he said, “and I am also interested in humanity, and that is the reason I am here. I have seen some of our best men and best citizens cut down and taken off instantly on the deadly grade crossings; have had to attend some of the funerals ‘and console the families after- ward, and it is a very touching thing. It is a’ sad thing to see the natural life crushed out of a ‘citizen. “But there ts something higher than this. As Christians we hold that some time should be given for preparation for death, and that is the principal reason why I am here to take a firm stand in the matter.” Father Gillespie spoke of three accidents whieh oceu: veek before last and men- toned the names of persons whom he knew were killed on the grade crossings. “When I saw an account of the organiza- tion of a le crossing association I thanked God for it." he added, “for I knew that the sooner the matter was brought to the public the sooner we would have a remedy.” He urged the association to keep up the good work and expressed a willingness to do all in his power to assist in it. ucker of the committee on sed legislation made a report in Whicn mention was made of the bill to be introduced concerning the railroad ques- tion. Ub resident Frizzell called the attention of the members of the association to the cot ner stone celebration, and said he had a per to present for contributions and he oped every member who was able would ke a contribution. ™Mr. Tucker moved that the association sanction the proposed $10,000,000 for im- provements, provided that ‘the loan would in no way relieve the United States of their obligation to pay one-half of the Dis- trict expenses, and also in case that the northeast should get its share of the im- ements. Pir. Boyer thought it rather early for the association to take action on this subject. A general di: ‘ion followed and Presi- dent Frizzell théught that the question should be discussed in mass meeting. The president's views were adopted and the as- sociation decided to hold the meeting next Monday night.
