THE FERRIS WHEEL. What May Be Experienced by a Journey Around It, RESULT OF AMERICAN ENGINEERING. Ponderous Network of and Steel. ITS GREAT POPULARITY. Iron ‘Written for The Evening Star. UT FEW WASHING- tonians have probably had the unique expe- rience of atrip in the big Ferria wheel at the world’s fair, and until s few weeks ago the suc- cersful completion of this mammoth strue- ture was « matter of conjecture by many. A well-known resident of this city, who was present at the opening sf the fair, told his friends upon his return that one of the most wonderful things to be seen at the exposition was s great wheel of im- mense dismeter, which if completed and started im its revolution looked as though it commer ber pene pm haegbaee ge Power required to move it, and he dou! As you rise, however, the noisy beating of the drums in the adjacent Algerian Theater be- comes fainter, and a jargoz of sounds from car is now at ite highest point, 265 feet from the ground. and the visitor 1s so entranced with the that he loses sizht of the fact that the descent has begun. The sparkling waters of the lake appear as the vast ocean, ant it is now that the full splendor of the scene is t. Not until the car bas performed its journey toward the does it seem that the view is becom- lees extensive, but the increasing noises eanse one to look downward, and it is that the most peculiar sensation of the experienced. No part of the great seen from the car, and, as lofty precipice, a desire to support as an assurance that is almost inevitable. At ite present rate of speed nineteen minutes are required to complete two revolutions. Diffeuity in securing the Concessions. About two years ago Mr. G. W. G. Ferris, prominent civil engineer of Pittsburg and the inventor and builder of the gigantic wheel which bears his name, first planned the work which has now proved such » success. After | some diMeulty he succeeded in organizing the | Ferris Wheel Company, capitalized at #600,000. | Half that amount in bonis were issued aud sold, and Mr. Ferris started for Chic: After securing « concession from the ways and means Committee of the fair to baild the wheel some @oubt was expressed by the committee as to the paying quality of the enterprise and the contract was revoked. Discouraged, but not | disheartened, Mr. Ferris again argued his case before the committee, and in December, 1392, | secured a second concession, guaranteeing to | give the fair 50 per cent of ull receipts after the | wheel had paid for itself, and under this con- Cession the wheel is now being operated. How the Wheel Was Built. Ia less than seven months and with ane! penditure of not less than $400,000 the entire work of construction has been done. The shaping of the iron was began last January and the first scaffolding erected in March. The # built from the ground upward, 400 emplored in its construction. and the many carloads of iron that were hauled up on the side tracks near the Midway Plaisance hare been skillfully joined until the big wheel is ow the landmark of the fair. The diameter of the wheel is 250 feet and the circumference measures 25 feet, the structure beiug raised fitteen feet from the ground. Twotwin wheei jeet apart, counected by iron rods and struis, which do aot approvch nearer than twenty feet to the outer edge, constitute the frame work. Ontsideo! these rods the cars are suspended from steel bars, about five inches in thickness, extending from’ one wheel to the other. Each wheel bas for its ontline a cnrved fron beam, 254 by 19 inches. Forty feet in- side 1 another beam, forming a smalier circle. From thexe beams extend the massive iron truss work hoidiog them together. ‘The great axle on which the wheel turn the largest piece of steel ever forge: thirty-three inches in diameter, forty-five a one-sixth feet | bing fifty-six tone and costing $35,000. it is fastened to exch of the twin wheels in a steel hub sixteen fect in diam- The two pyramidal steel towers, at the h the axis is 140 feet hy forty br fit nd six feet square at the top. Each tower has four cl like supports resting on 20-foot cube cone foundations extending thirty-five feet below the surface of the ground. Underneath these are cross bars of steel. The skeleton of the wheel consists of 24-inch steel rods, arranged to run out in pairs from the asle to spread thirteen feet apart from the circumference. They do not look strong enongh to hold the wheel to- getbe and in stopping and starting rattle and iver in a way that terrifies many a nassenge: fas rattling is caused by the fact that there is not enough of @ load in the cars to straighten out the rods. At present the wheel runs only during the day, but it is proposed to arrange in groups on the rods around the crown of the wheel 3,000 incandescent lights of various colors, which will be alternately extinguished is furnished by a 1,000 horse power steam engine under the wheel, aud another engine possible accident to the machinery. of a brake the wheel can be stopped without didiculty. ‘The wheel ix m ved by cogs on the periphery passing over a chain resembling a | mammoth bicycle chain. The dedicatory ceremories were held on June 21, in the presence of 10,000 people, and the wheel seems even a greater work of engineer ng and more of a novelty than the famous Eiff tower at the Paris exposition of 1889. After the close of the world’s fair the structure is to be taken to Coney Island, where it will bea permanent attraction. From Harper's Bazar. “When I went to school,” said » charming grandmother of our acquaintance, “I never knew what it meant to have a headache. Yet wy granddaughters complain of them almost constantly. Something must be wrong. What is it?” In the search for causes thus instituted it was at first suspected that lack of proper ventila- tion in school or sleeping rooms was to blame. This not proving to be the case the food was inquired about and several things appeared to the sensible grandmother to be wrong. The giris were allowed to eat what, when, and what quantity they chose, not seldom omitting thelr meals entirely. “Don't force them to eat,” had been the parental injunction. “Young people will always eat as much as is good for them”. Unfortunately this is not al- ways the case. There are many young girls who have no appetites for their breakfasts, the really most important meal of the day, and if unchecked will start apon their day's work with no better provision to meet its demands than a cup of coffee and a cracker. The blood is called to the brain by the first hours of study, and the lack of nourishment, though not felt as such, is very perceptible in its effects. The Episcopal Church boasts of Gen. Washington's frequent attendance there in his day. During the last war the interior of the church was demolished, the old tiles brought from England, the seats, sounding board and everything portable being carried away to the neighboring camps, for the little town knew exciting times ‘during the war. Marching and counter marching of troops, alarms of battles that did rot take place and hurried flights and concealments fen enemies that passed by on the otherside afterall. But there were several skirmishes and dead and wounded enough te bring sorrow to many hearts, more. They are exhausted, fretful, unreason- able; their “heads ache.” They feel but little more appetite for luncheon than for breakfast, and that little they satisfy with the least nour- ishing sorts of food which are placed before them. At the late dinner—the only meal to which they come of their own accord—they eat more, perhaps too much, in fact, but rarely of that which is best suited to their real needs. After the grandmother's observations had shown her this state of things, she asked that ‘one of ber granddaughters might be loaned to her for one year. As all lived in the same city, attended the same school and complained of the same trouble, her roposed experiment was 8 fair one. and one girls was loaned to her grandmother for ‘the p ba desired. Like those of the irate gouty man, Mabel's prunes were cooked without sugar. Even the first morning after this there was a slight improvement. His Emotions on Trial Accurately Registered by Electricity. From the Pittsburg Dispatch. These who are accustomed to frequent the courts in which murder cases are tried find themselves drifting into the habit of attaching great significance to actions, gestures and ex- pressions which under ordinary circumstances would escape notice. A prominent electrical journal relates how this habit led to the con- vietion of a murderer through the aid of elec- tricity. ‘The murder had been one of unwonted atroc- ity. and the prisoner appeared absolutely in- different, In fact, it was impossible for the keenest ese to detect any change in his counte- nance or attitude during the examination of the witnesses who gave the most damaging testi- mony agsinst him. The prosecuting attorney, however, noticed that he never once relaxed his hoid on the arms of the chair in which he sat, but seemed to support himself by the pressure which he brought to bear on them. Knowing tbat under intense mental excite- ment, no matter how outwardly calm an indi- vidual may be, the bands will sarotee ey contract and relax, according to the intens Of the emotion and the susceptibility of the | person affected, the counsel saw here a chance of securing evidence of great v He ght that if the arms of the chair coud ‘be made to communicate the pressure of the invisible contractions of the muscles of the hands and arms of the witness an important light might be thrown on the case. Wires were run from metal placed on either side of the carbon through the legs of the chair under the floor to a telephone receiver and battery placed in an adjoining closet.
