Thayer, the warden of Clinton Prison at Danuemora, N.Y., went to Albapy late yesterday afternoon and related to Gov. Flower a brutal scheme of a number of long- term prisoners confined in that prison to gain their freedom, which included the cold-blooded murder of several of the prison guards. One of the prisoners, who was asked to enter into the murderous attempt to escape, refused, and it was through him that the prison authorities became aware of the plot. The governor, when he heard the facts, immediately pardoned the prisoner who had the courage and manli- ness to prevent = slaughter. At noon Sunday, in Clinton prison, as the prigoners fied through the prisga corridor, in lock-step, on their way past Principal Keoper McKenna, to obtain their rations for dinner, one of the prieoners sli into the hand of the principal keeper a piece of brown —— vel two foot long by a foot wide, whic! With these the wero to sally forth when the guard made round, kill him and take his revolver. They were then to go to the office and kill the other guard, All the prisoners in the scheme were subsequently to be released. Keeper, McKeusa immediately notified Warden Thayer of the plot, and « search of the cells of the men named revealed matters be just as stated in the letter. Other cells were searched and positive evidences of the complicity of two other convicts were found. Both Governor Flower and Werden Thayer refused to divulge, for the present, at least, the name of the prisoner who probably had saved the lives of several prison guards. They thought it might bring trouble upon him, if not from the prisoners whom he gave away. probably from some of their friends outside of ‘the warden did not go near the prisoner after receiving his communication, and said last night the latter probably does not yet know | toy Tpderate: the result of his warning. ‘The fortunate man was received at the prison in August, 1892, and bad four years to serve for and Jarceny. | The crime was committed in jew York elty, where the prisoner has a wife ‘and child: Warden ‘Thayer left for Dannemora at mid- night with the pardon in his pocket. taunts Tail and Dog.
