The Emmet Guard Parade the Streets of Newark, N. J. And Are Greeted With Enthusisstic Ap- plause—They Break Camp Today and Return to Washington. ‘Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. Camp Corvmsvs, Carzpoia Panx, Newanx, N. J., July 4, 1898. Today, the anniversary of the birth of Ameri- can independence, is, according to custom, be- ing appropriately celebrated throughout the country. Organizations, both civie and mili- tary, are parading through the streets of every city and village of the land. The Irish are nat- urally participants in these great national holi- day celebrations, and the Irish-American militia encamped in Newark were up and ready to turn out bright and early this morning. The ordinary routine of camp duty was fol- lowed at 9 o'clock by the formation of a regi- ment, with Maj. Gen. Kelly, commander-in- chief of the Irish-American Military Union, in command. The column was marched to Mili- tary Park, on Broad street, where the numbers were increased by the addition of four compa- nies of the first regiment of the New Jersey ‘National Guard and several civic organizations. The parade was escorted bya squad of six mounted policemen from the fourth precinct. The parade passed over an asphalt-paved street—which, by the way, isa rarity in New- ark—and our boys put up a drill that brought forth more applause than was given to any other command present. The soldiers were thoroughly tired out when camp was reached, and after changing their full dress uniforms for the more comfortable fatigues made for the dining room. Dancing and speeches were next in order, and the pavilion presented a lively appearance. As the parade passed St. John’s Catholic Church, of which Dr. Fanning, chaplain gen- eral of the order, is pastor, chimed “The Wearing of the Green.” The organizations taking part in the parade were as follows: Companies A, B, Cand D of the first regiment, New Jersey National Guard; the Emmet Guard, Guard Lafayette of New York, Liberty Guards of Jersey hay Bar ya company A, Alliance Guard, New York city; company A. Hibernian Rifles of Long Island City; companies A and B, second regiment, Irish Volunteers of New York city; First Philadelphia 1 Corps, Parnell Guards of Elizabeth, NJ. companies A and B. fret regiment, Irish Volunteers of Newark. ; Ancient Order of Hibernians, with eight ‘ivisionss St. Patrick's Alliance and twenty of the general staff, mounted. Z DRESS PARADE. At 6 o'clock this evening we had a dress parade, followed by an exhibition drill by the Emmet Guard. It was a grand success, not- withstanding the unevenness of the ground. A veteran officer of oue of New York’s crack regiments remarked enthusiastically that it was the best he hed ever sean, and ag fer ne I ," a8 our boys are familiarl, carry off the cake tomorrow, w contest for the championship of the American Militery Union. :30 this evening Prof. Nickol’s Orchestra of Newark rendered szcellont mesic, which wae step: by a majority of mmete—an: out of every ten who mingled with the glad- some throng wore one of our green badges, for they seem to prefer the young men of our party to all others. As Camp Columbus has grown older military discipline bas become stricter, until now it is totally impossible for an enlisted man to either get outor into the grounds without a pass, which, although much sought after, are seldom obtained. The gates and other points requir- ing a guard were taken care of today, by Capt. Jas. F. R. Rodgers as officer of the day; Sergt. Ward as sergeant of the guard, ». Fallon as corporal of the guard. and Privates Quinlivan, Stafford, McSherry, Byrnes and Murphy as sentinels, all of company B of the Hibernian Rifles. Tomorrow will be the last day of this en- campment, which has been very successful. There is in camp & light battery of artillery comy ‘olanders. Theit commander does not pth Hae the Eny it was quite amusing to see his company during dress parade. ‘The boys say ther are having ‘a good time, but I think most of them will heart to the strate of “Home, Sweet Hom the train carrying them to Washingto: A COURT-MARTIAL. A jollification meeting was held last night by the Bachelors’ Club, a select organization, con- sisting of members of the Emmet Guard. Pri- vate Jobn P. Rice was court-martualed for keep- ing company with the ladies, and was ordered to desist from that pleasant pastime. Brother Rice is a very handsome man and suffers con- siderable torment from his comrades because of his fondness for « looking glass. After its meeting the Bachelors’ Club enter- tained the Guard Lafayette from New York and neat speeches were made by Maj. Johnson, as- sistant signal officer of the Military Union, and President Shea of the club and Capt. Trebeau of the Lafayetten. The hai ld medal awarded by the fourth battalion, B.C. N-G., to Private J. 3 Walsh as their champion individual driller has been much admired by Mr. Walsh's many friends here, and be is justly proud of 38 for it means that ‘be is the best-drilled man in his battalion. After Sonn and breakfast yesterday morn- ing and just before going on post as sentine! Capt. Waish and bis men gave an almost fault- Jess company drill. They wore the he regulation white helmet and blue uniform. was in fair condition, but nothing ‘une the smocth floor of the drill ‘hall in Conter Market armory. However, this inconvenience made no differ- ence. The admirable exhibition was warmly received and heartily oe ded by the Targe audience of enthusiastic Ind; and o {eal officers. This company, without the least doubt, has more admirers here any other organization on the ground. Guard mount was followed by the regular routine of camp work, and several of our boys who succeeded in obtaining passes left camp— some to see the sights, others to visit scquaintan- cesin Newark, Jersey City and New York. Dull- ness is a thing unknown in our midst at pres- ent, for the reason that the natural wit and jolly good nature of the Irishman is contin- ally asserting iteelf. ‘esterday morning Captain Walsh, who is t commander, issued an order making the jowing detail for guard duty: Lieutenant James Giblin, company T, Irish See of Newark, officer of the day; Sergeant W. Galla- gher of the Emmet Guard, sergeant of the ard; frat detail: Corporal Joseph Edmonds, ivates J. M. Walsh, W. Gwynne, P. Shea, J. Gallagher, T. Boucher, H. Whaley; second detail: Corporal T. ‘Gately, Privates E. O'Riordan, B. Ready. J. Murphy, W. Collins, M. Boucher, J. Fanning; third detail: C ‘orpo- ral O'Connell, Privates W. F. Smith, J. O'Con- nor, J. Bolger, J. MeCann, J. T. Connor, J. P. Ri It rained yesterday, but our tents are well put up, and ‘those at’ home need not worry about ‘their soldier boys. Maj. Gen. Kelly had ordered a dress parade for this evening, but owing to the inclement weather the order was revoked. In place of the expected treat those present had one still better. Capt. | Walsh and his company gave an exhibition drill in the pavilion. The boys wore their full- dress uniforms, and it would be difficult to | finda handsomer, more soldierly lot of men. Their friends in Washington know what kind of aril they put up, and therefore I will not at- tempt to criticise tonight's affair. THEY KNOW HOW To DANCE. At the dance given last evening I was re- minded very forcibly of an old saying to the effect that a soldier is more at home than a civilian when piloting a lady over the smooth floor of a bail room. The Fourth Passed Off Without Any Public Celebration—Notes. Rocxvitze, July 4, 1898. The “glorious Fourth” passed off here ina quiet way, uo public demonstration being made. Quite « large number of citizens spent the day in visiting places of interest at a distance and during the day the town was visited by a large number of strangers, principally from the Dis- triet, Those who visited the town for the first time were loud in their praises of the beauty of the piace. Today business was almost entirely suspended and the juveuile portion of the popu- lation had full possession of the streets, which they made particularly lively with firecrackers and other explosives. One of the tentures of the day was an exciting game of base ball be- tween the Lafayette Club of Washington and the Athletics of this place, resulting ina score of 18 to 7 in favor of the Rockville boys. The playing on both sides was very good, and the game was witnessed by a large crowd, ielud- ing quite a number of young Indies. After dark there was a fine display of fireworks in various parts of the town, Mr. George N. Beaver, a well-known citizen of the vicinity of Glen, died very suddenly at his home yesterday evening about 8 o'clock. During the day Mr. Beaver, who was the con- tractor for carrying the mail between this place and Potomac, had been in his usual good health and attending to business, returning to his home early in the evening. At the above hour he was seated ina chair conversing with his family, when he fell over and suddenly expired. It is thought that his death was caused by con- gestion of the brain. He was in the fifty-sixth year of his age, Messrs. Arthur, George and Perry A. Gloyd of Gaithersburg ‘are spending some weeks in the Catskill mountains. Aviolent rain storm, accompanied by hail and strong wind, occurred here yesterday evening, doing considerable damage to the corn crop and playing havoc with the harvested wheat in the fields. Many farm hands lost their holiday today on account of having to repair the damage done by the gale. ‘The Anderson house at this place, said to be one of the oldest residences in this section of the state and dating back to revolutionary times, will ins few days, be torn down to use was for many years occupied by the Inte Dr. John W. Anderson and family and stands on Washington street. The tournament and picnic at Burnt Mille, in the fifth collection district, today was the center of attraction for the “democratic poli- ticians of the county, many of whom are in attendance. Mary, daughter of Mr. William 8. Brooke, died this morning at the residence of her parents near Washington Grove, in the twenty- fecond year of her age. Her remains wili in the Friends’ burying Loe at Bandy Spring. AM _ ey > PARK, The party of young 1 people chaperoned by Mrs. Dr. Watersand Mra. Dr. Darling, who participated in the straw ride on Monday even- ing, were doomed to disappointment and drenching, in consequence of the sudden and severe storm which overtook them in the open road some distance from any shelter a few minutes later, and refuge was afforded by the hospitable occupants of a farm house, who furmshed not only shelter, but changes of clothing to those who suffered most from t rainfall, after which it was decided to tpone the straw ride and return to the residence of Mrs. Darling, where dancing was indul ged in. Several parties of young people with chap- erones left here last evening for the dance given at Forest Inn, some of whom were the ‘Misses Myers, Startzman. Clark, Mrs. Wm. Al- vey, Messrs. Parkins, Losekam, Post and Page. ‘The festivals hed by the King’s Daughters and Ladies’ Aid Society near the terminus of the electric road and at Takoma spring were fairly patronized, the cool weather and heavily laden basket, the latter carried by most of those who came for the day, interfering somewhat with the sale of edibles provided by the ladies. Over 4,000 people were registered for Takoma yesterday, most of whom were seeking or bound Sligo. Miss Bertie Page has issued invitations for Friday evening to » number of her young friends in Takoma for an informal social at her home on Maple avenue. ‘Miss Julia Post is much improved from her condition of a week since, when her physician was fearful that her illness would be of long duration.
