Revolutionary War Mementoes to Be Found at the Fair. GREAT COLLECTION OF AMERICANA. It is Distributed Among Many Buildings. THINGS FORA PATRIOT TO SEE. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Curcago, July 2, 1893. A number of different peopie working independently of each other have brought to the great fair at Chicago what constitutes undoubtedly the most valuable collection of illustrations of the struggle for American independence ever shown to the public before. That these papers, pictures and relies should not be found under one roof, but should be scattered about the whole vast area of Jackson Park, is perhaps to be regretted, but it must be remembered that the owners of the articles unless suffered to exercise their whims or fancies in choosing their exhibitors will not lend their precious possessions at all. One person will accept no other custodian than the general government and another insists upon showing his relic in his state building, while those corporations which make displays like to snsert some historical object, although the pur- of the exhibit may essentially modern. Fheaceount of the chief objects of revolutionary interest which will be given here cannot be minuteand may not be complete, but it em- braces all the prineipal objects that are now on a THE GOVERNMENT EXHIBIT. ‘The most important resting place of the records of the revolution is the government of the United States, and it is, therefore, only proper that it should be the chief exhibitor of revolutionary history. The Department of State has in ite possession the records of the Continental Congrese, the papers of Washing. ton, Franklin, Jefferson apd pate worry besides army returns and innumerable other manu- seripts pertaining to the revolution and the events which preceded and followed it. It has sent some of these to Chicago, and the petition to the king which was passed by the Congress of 1774 and presented by ‘Franilin in London is to be seon side by side with the fierce letter of Franklin to “Mr. Strahan.” “Look upon Four hands,” it says; ‘they are stained with the blood of your relations, and I were once friends. “You are now my enemy and I am yours. B. Franklin.” k has faded some- ‘what, but the large, clear penmanship of Frank lin can be read enally at «distance o legible are the letters of Adams, ry ‘and Jay which they wrote to the home government when they were joint commission- | ers to negotiate peace with Great Britain. There are other volumes of letters, and the last origi ndence is not in Chieago, but the photo- of the old parchment is illustrated by Prints of the men who signed it and by a fine trait of itsauthor. The close of the revo- jutionary war is marked by the treaty of peace with Great Britain, the original of which re- Pore the 8 Spend it section of the in the War ent gov- ernment. bui there is astand of revolu- ¢ old pine tree flag is there, ith the defiant motto, “Don’t tread on me,” and the early stars and stripes, and near these flags there stands a hand- some old bronze cannon. Acard on the post beside it tolls a visitor that it was taken by the —— de Lafayette at Yorktown. Then the general was on his tour through the United Staies in 1825,” it continues, “he called to visit Watervliet arsenal, West Troy, N. Y., and while the salute was being fired he recognized this cannon by a conspicuous in- dentation made by a shot in its side. He is said tohave approached and embraced it as the companion of his youth. At the death of Lafayette the government order was received at Watervliet arsenal directing the half-hour gun to be fired in his honor. executed with thie same gun, which had been 80 prominently identified with his early history.” Another phase of revolutionary times is rop- resented in the rutunda of the government building by “the board of lady managers’ colonial exhibit,” which shows many household and personal articles, not confining itself alone to the colonial period, ‘THE COLLEGE EXHIBIT. ‘The participation of the older American col- leges in the revolution is a fact of which they are justly proud, andsome stress has been laid upon it in the educational exhibit which constitutes a ion of the department of Mberal arts, the old College of William and Mary, which educated so man: ginians who were conspicuous in the war, is not Fepresented here, others are, In Harvard's section are the works of her graduates, which include several that embrace the revolutionary period, and Princeton shows her celebrated portrait by C. W. Peale of Washii battle of Princeton, and a fine effigy of Rev. John Witherspoon, president of the from 1768, until he entered the Continental Congress in 1776, where he sat for six yours “in full clerical dress." Columbia College in New York exhibits a print of the building oc- cupied by ite modest little progenitor, King’s College, and the University of ener vania shows the thirty-day clock present it by the acientist, David ittel Louse, ale gave Washington the spectacles he used. But perhaps the most interesting relic to be seen in this part of the fair is found in the New York section, and consists of two links of the great chain which was stretched across the Hudson river in 1778 to prevent the British ships from coming up. The links are about two feet and « half long, and are so heavy that it seems re- 9 that the great chain was successfully carried from shore to shore. It requires no stretch of imagination to picture the ease —_ which « large ship could snap this strai struction to her Tt was = Peter Townsend at Staring iron works, Orange county, N. There are also two quaint pictures by Paul Revere, one of the | “Boston Massacre” and the other of the land- tng of the Brith troops at Boston. ‘ollowing the plan adopted by Massachu- setts and Virginia, Pennsylvania's building is a handsome representation of wold Independence Hall, and in the entrance hangs the cracked liberty bell, which was transported in trium- phal Lg wig from Philadelphia to —— before was opened. There is a notable portrait here by Sharpless of the chancellor, Robert R. Living ston, one of the committee’ appointed to draw up the Declaration of Independence, and secre- << of foreign affairs during nearly the whole riod of the revolution. The portrait differs materially from those usually seen, the best of which probably hangs in the rooms of the New York Historical Socicty. WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS. ‘The New Jersey state building contains no revolutionary exhibit, but the building itself is a faithful reproduction of Washington's head- quarters at Morristown in 1779 and 1780. It was here, it will be remembered, that Benedict Arnold came frequently and here Alexander Hamilton mot Miss Schuyler, whom he married soon afterward. In Rhode Island's modest building there are two revoluntionary portraits, one of Col. Wm. Barton, who captured the British Gen. There is a portrait, too, of Commodore Edward Preble, who began his career as a teera- wan in 1777-1778, and the uniform o! in the continental marine corps at the begin- ning of the revolution is exhibited. It consists of & green coat faced with white, slashed sleeves, white buttons, waistcoat and knee breechés, white, edged with green, bieek gaiters and garters. The cocked is green and there ure two croes belts of white webbing. It will be noticed in the account of the revo- lutionary exhibit that many of the chief phases of the struggle are wholly overlooked. Such ‘Daniel Morgan, the hero of the men as Gen. Cor or Gen. Francis Marion, the leader of the partisans in South Carolina, do not ap- Pear, nor are there any illustrations of the events in which they were the leading spirits. North Carolina and South Carolina have no state exhibits, and Guilford and Ki tain and the defense of Charleston are conse- quently lost from the collection, but there is still enough left to justify the statement that more is shown than Was ever seen before, and that the visitor who takes an interest in the struggle for independence need not leave the fair until his interest has been satisfied.
