More than one-half of the Alexandria city taxes for 1898, over $40.000, are nowin the city treasury, and City Treasurer Harlow is paying out the semi-annual interest on the city debt, which will reach some $17,000.. All the officials, teachers and employes have been paid, and the new council goes in with a full treasury. There is no surplus, however, ax the payments of taxes will be slow during the residue of the year, and the #10.000 taxes overdue for past years, the residue of the taxes for the present year, the fines, licenses and freuts yet to come will be quite sufficient to enable the city to pay its way, but there is no reason to suppose that at the end of the Secal year there will be more than «small sum in the hands of Mr.J.H.D.Lunt, who will have succeeded Mr. Harlow and be the city treasurer when the fiscal year cloves. Be- cause of the early session of Congress many of the employes of the office will endvavor to take their annual leave during this month, almost the entire nigitt force of the press room having made application for leaves of absence to begin today. ‘There will be no difficulty, it is aid, in hav- ing all the work now pending ready to lay on the desks of Con, en on the 7th of August. ‘The bulk of the fall work prepared for the meeting of Congress consists of aunual reports of preg various government departments, but it 18 Rot likely that any considerable amount of wuch work will be placed in the hands of the public printer this month. waxes WILL GO TO ST.
