It is’ doubtful whether at any time. in the history of this house a star bas evoked more admiratign than Miss Beckwith. Young, | beautiful and graceful, with all the dexterity and daring of the fabulous mermaid, she pre- sents an act that possesses that novelty which never wears off. Her extended engagement of four weeks is a ‘new experience to the patron: though in Baltimore, under James L. Kernan’ management, she appeared for over six months, Other engagements interfering, however, Miss Beckwith cannot ‘remain longer than’ next week. It has alzeady proved a most valuable method of work. The legion will hold a meeting on Monday night at Harris’ Hall. MR. BLAINE AND DR. COR. What the Late Secretary Thought of His Augusta Pastor. A good deal has been said in the press rela tive to Rev. Dr. Ecob, the pastor of a Presby- terian Church in Albany, N. Y., who, after the decision by the general assembly in the Briggs case, announced his withdra:al from the Pros- byterian communion. This action was looked upon as rather extreordi No minister has followed his example. It served, however, to attract a good deal of attention to Dr. Ecob, and in this connection it ix of interest to know what his most distinguixhei parishioner said of him in a letter toa friend written some two years ago. Dr. Ecob was pastor of the Presby- terian Church in Augusta, Me., for a number of years, and the late Secretary of State, Jas. G. Blaine, attended his church and bad a strong friendship for him. In the letter referred to, which was written in this city, Mr. Blaine sai “The only hesitancy I have in speaking of Dr. Ecob is lest my language should seem ex- travagant. He is a man of great talent, a writer of sermons as fine as any that are now preached in the American pulpit; n modest man, as pe as the driven snow; in all respects a model.
