The citizens of this locality are earnest in their desire to make the authorities feel the force of the growth of the neighborhood, and over two years ago there was formed a citizens’ ; | Saseciation to look after the needs of the com- munity in the way of public improvements and to properly present those needs to the District authorities. This association met at different Places and the need of some hall at which the regular meetings could be held was soon ap- parent. An effort was made to start a movo- ment to build a hall, but it was ineffectual, and though there were a few energetic spirits who were willing to subscribe the general in- terest in the project died out, THE HALL AssoctaTion. Avyear ago, however, the idea of erecting a public ball was revived, and ata meeting held ‘on the first Tuesday in July formal steps were taken for the organization of the Brookland Hall Association. Temporary officers wore elected, and a committee to draft a constitution and by-laws was appointed. It took several meetings to get matters into perfect shape, and then the association was completed by elec- tion of the following officers: President, Thos. G. Carmick; vice president. It is expected that a large number trom the city will go out and that perhaps a greater crowd will attend the dedication ball that will be held in the new hall to night. a ER AN ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, ‘Miss Lottie Moran Turns on the Gas at the Belvedere, but May Recover. “Mrs, Morgan, Baltimore,” was registered by asad-faced woman in black, who appeared at tho Belvedere Hotel Tuesday evening about 10 o'clock. There was nothing about the woman to indicate that there was anything the matter with her mind or that she was other than a woman who had just reached the city ona train, and the clerk assigned her to one of the | © nicest rooms in the house, she paying her bill in advance. Yesterday morning nothing was seen of the woman, but there wasa smell of gas coming from the room she occupied. The persons employed about the hotel were unable to locate the place from where the gas was escaping, and it was not until late yesterday afternoon that Mr. Hoadley, the proprietor, discovered that it was escaping from the room occupied by the supposed Baltimore woman. Then ho looked over the transom and saw what ap- peared to be the dead form of the woman stretched upon locked and taint signs of hfe in the woman's were visible. She was unconscious and to move.
