In the Criminal Court, Division No. 2, Jus- tice Cole, this morning George Proctor, a col- ored boy in his twenty-first year, was charged with violating sec. 3392, RS.U.S., taking from the mail on February 17, 1898, a package ad- dressed to Mrs. John Luke, Penzeance, Corn- wall, England. There were two or more charges against the prisoner, and Mr. T. C. Taylor. after consulting with bim, advised that he plead guilty on this indictment. After the tragedy at Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865, when President Lincoln was assassi- nated by John Wilkes Booth, Edwin Booth would never appear in Washington. It is well known that Mr. Booth at first rosolved never to act again, but he was compelled by busi- ‘Ress engagements to resume his professional duties. He, however, swore that he would never act in Washington, and be never did. During President Arthur's administration an effort was made to induce Mr. Booth to break that resolution and act in this city.
